Yes—Steam lists a DirectX 8.1-level graphics card with SSE support as Half-Life 2’s minimum graphics requirement, and Valve documents -dxlevel 81 as the Source launch option for selecting the DX8.1 feature level. That option does not switch the game to a Direct3D 8 renderer, and whether it works depends on the installed game branch and your PC.
What DirectX 8.1 means in Half-Life 2
Steam’s Half-Life 2 store listing names “DirectX 8.1 level Graphics Card (requires support for SSE)” as the minimum graphics requirement. This describes a graphics-card capability; it is not a guarantee that every GPU, driver, operating system, or current game installation will work.

In Source, -dxlevel 81 selects a DirectX feature level. Valve’s command-line documentation maps 81 to DX8.1 and explains that the selected feature level is separate from the Direct3D renderer version. The option does not make the game use the Direct3D 8 API; older feature levels can instead disable or fall back from newer features and assets.
How to try -dxlevel 81
- In Steam, open your Library, right-click Half-Life 2, choose Properties, and find Launch Options.
- Enter
-dxlevel 81and launch the game once. Valve notes that video settings may temporarily reset when changing the level. - Close the game and remove
-dxlevel 81from Launch Options. Valve says the selected value can persist for later starts and recommends removing the option after the first launch. - Restart and check the video settings to see what hardware level the game reports.
Steam Support also lists -dxlevel [level] as a launch option for forcing a specific DirectX version; see its launch options guidance.

If the option is rejected or has no effect
Valve’s documentation says -dxlevel was removed in some later Source branches, so the option is not guaranteed to work in every Half-Life 2 installation. If your game ignores or rejects it, identify the installed game branch, operating system, GPU, and driver before choosing a fix.
Do not assume installing a DirectX runtime will add hardware feature support to a graphics card. Steam Support distinguishes the installed DirectX software from the hardware support needed for pixel-shader features. Compatibility depends on the combination of the game branch, GPU capabilities, operating system, and driver—not simply on the runtime installed.
