Yes. MongoDB and MySQL can run on the same Linux server because their documented default TCP listeners are different. Co-location is safe only when the host has sufficient CPU, memory, storage and I/O capacity, and both databases are isolated, secured, monitored and backed up.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Do MongoDB and MySQL conflict on one server?
They do not inherently conflict. Each database runs as its own process, has its own configuration, data directory, log files and service definition. A normal installation gives each service a different TCP listener, so starting one does not occupy the port required by the other.

| Database | Documented default TCP listener | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| MongoDB Community Edition | 27017 | MongoDB Ubuntu installation guide and MongoDB Red Hat or CentOS installation guide |
| MySQL | 3306 | MySQL Server startup-script documentation |
A port conflict occurs only if you deliberately configure both daemons to bind the same address and port, or if another application already owns one of the chosen listeners. The more important risk is resource contention: a document-heavy MongoDB workload and a relational MySQL workload can compete for memory, CPU time, filesystem cache and disk I/O.
When co-location is a sensible design
Keeping both databases on one host is usually reasonable for development, a small application, a low-traffic internal service or a cost-conscious deployment whose peak load is known. One machine also reduces network hops and gives you one operating-system patching and monitoring target.

Co-location becomes questionable when either database is latency-sensitive, when traffic is highly variable, or when one workload can consume most of the host’s memory or storage throughput. A single host is also a single failure domain: an operating-system failure, filesystem problem, power event or maintenance reboot takes both databases offline together.
- Choose one host when lower cost, simpler operations and shared local connectivity matter more than fault isolation.
- Choose separate virtual machines or physical servers when independent failure domains, predictable latency, independent maintenance and separate scaling are priorities.
- Start together only if you can measure the combined workload and have a tested recovery plan.
Supported Linux distributions and versions
Install MongoDB from MongoDB’s official packages for the exact distribution and release. The vendor’s v8.0 Ubuntu documentation describes the maintained mongodb-org package, while its Red Hat-family guide covers the corresponding package path. Read the support matrix for the release, architecture and operating-system version you intend to use; support is release-specific and should be rechecked before an upgrade.
Install MySQL using the package or repository method supported by your Linux distribution and the MySQL release you selected. Do not mix arbitrary third-party packages with vendor packages unless you understand the resulting service names, configuration paths and upgrade behavior.
Before installing either database, record the operating system version, CPU architecture, filesystem layout and available disk space. Confirm that the MongoDB release supports that combination and that the MySQL package is available for the same system. Keeping both products on a supported, consistently patched distribution makes later troubleshooting substantially easier.
How to install both databases without mixing their files
- Prepare the host. Apply operating-system updates, create an administrative change record, verify time synchronization and reserve separate filesystem locations if the data volume is not the root filesystem.
- Install MongoDB. Follow the package instructions for your supported Ubuntu or Red Hat-family release in the Ubuntu guide or Red Hat guide. Use the vendor package rather than an unrelated package with a similar name.
- Install MySQL. Use the repository or distribution package instructions for the chosen MySQL release. Keep its configuration and data paths distinct from MongoDB’s paths.
- Start and enable the services. Recent Linux systems normally use systemd. MongoDB documents service control with
systemctlor the compatibilityservicecommand. MySQL may expose a systemd unit and also documents its startup script. The exact unit name can vary by distribution, so inspect the installed package’s service name rather than assuming that every system calls it the same thing. - Verify health before application configuration. Check each service’s status, inspect its log for startup errors and confirm that it is listening on the intended interface and port. A service that is “active” but repeatedly restarting is not ready for application traffic.
Keep MongoDB and MySQL users, directories, log rotation rules and backup jobs separate. Separate ownership and permissions prevent an accidental maintenance command for one product from altering the other product’s files.

Confirm listeners and prevent port collisions
MongoDB’s documented default listener is 27017, and MySQL’s documented default TCP/IP port is 3306. You can retain those defaults when no other service uses them. If your organization requires custom ports, assign unique values, update each application’s connection string and document the change in firewall rules and monitoring.
After startup, use the host’s socket-listing tools to identify the process bound to each listener. Then test a local connection with the appropriate client: MongoDB’s documentation demonstrates connecting with mongosh, and MySQL can be tested with its command-line client. A successful client connection proves that the daemon is reachable locally; it does not prove that remote access is safely configured.
Binding policy matters more than the numeric port. Applications on the same server should normally connect through loopback or a private interface. Bind a database to a routable address only when remote clients require it, and restrict that address with host-level and network firewalls.
Resource planning: there is no universal RAM number
The official material for this question does not specify a universal RAM minimum, benchmark result or safe combined database-size threshold. Any answer that promises that a particular amount of memory is always sufficient would be misleading. Requirements depend on dataset size, indexes, query concurrency, transaction patterns, cache behavior, aggregation or join complexity, replication choices and backup activity.
Plan capacity from measurements rather than from the fact that two services are installed. Establish a baseline while each database is idle, then measure realistic peak traffic with both workloads running. Track:

- Memory pressure: available memory, reclaim activity, swap use and whether either database is being terminated by the kernel’s out-of-memory handler.
- CPU saturation: sustained utilization, run-queue length and which process consumes CPU during slow requests.
- Storage capacity: database files, indexes, binary logs, journals, temporary files, retained backups and free-space headroom.
- Disk latency and throughput: read and write latency under normal traffic, checkpoint or journal activity, and backup reads. Two databases can appear CPU-light while waiting on the same storage device.
- Network use: client traffic, replication traffic where applicable and backup destinations if they are remote.
Leave operating-system headroom for filesystem cache, security agents, log processing and short bursts. Do not allocate every byte of memory to database caches. If swapping begins during normal peaks, latency becomes unpredictable; reduce cache allocations, lower concurrency, add memory or move one workload before the host reaches that state.
Storage layout and I/O isolation
MongoDB and MySQL should not merely have different directories; they should be planned as independent workloads. Put data, logs and temporary or recovery files where your storage design can accommodate their different write patterns. Separate volumes can make capacity and latency easier to observe, although separate directories on one saturated device do not provide true I/O isolation.
Measure the effect of maintenance operations. A full backup, index build, table operation, compaction or log flush can create a temporary I/O spike that slows the other database. Schedule heavy operations outside the shared workload’s critical window, throttle them where the product supports it and monitor latency during the job. Keep enough free space for database growth, journals, temporary files and a failed or partially retained backup; a full volume can stop a healthy daemon as abruptly as a software failure.
Security configuration for a shared host
Installations should not be treated as secure merely because both services listen on localhost initially. Create separate administrative and application accounts, use strong authentication, apply least privilege and remove unused accounts. Applications should receive only the permissions they need for their own database or schema.
Use the host firewall and any upstream firewall to allow 27017 and 3306 only from required networks. If an application runs on the same machine, do not expose the database listener publicly just to avoid configuring a local connection. For remote clients, prefer a private network or controlled tunnel, require encrypted connections where supported and restrict source addresses.

Keep operating-system patches and database security updates on a planned schedule. Test upgrades in a staging environment that matches the production distribution and architecture. A shared host needs a maintenance sequence: stop or drain applications, protect both databases, apply the change, start services, verify logs and test application connections.
Backups and recovery when both databases share a machine
Back up MongoDB and MySQL independently. Their backup formats, consistency requirements, restore tools and point-in-time capabilities differ, so one filesystem copy of the server is not a substitute for database-aware backups. Store backup data outside the production host; a disk failure, ransomware event or host compromise must not destroy the only copy.
Document retention, encryption, access controls and the owner responsible for each backup job. Schedule jobs so that their CPU, memory and I/O demand does not unexpectedly starve production queries. Record the duration and size of every run, because backup windows often grow with the data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMost importantly, perform restore tests. Restore MongoDB to a temporary environment and verify collections and indexes; restore MySQL and verify schemas, permissions and representative queries. Measure how long recovery takes and whether the combined host can meet that recovery objective. If restoring both databases on the same failed server is impossible, the design needs an alternate host or an explicitly documented rebuild path.

Recent Linux distributions commonly use systemd. MongoDB documents managing mongod with systemctl or service. MySQL documents its startup script and systemd integration in its reference manual. Use the service manager to check whether each daemon is enabled at boot, currently active and free of restart loops.

- Check service status after every reboot and package upgrade.
- Review MongoDB and MySQL logs for authentication failures, storage errors, crashes and repeated slow operations.
- Alert on low disk space, rising disk latency, swap activity, sustained CPU saturation and failed backups.
- Confirm that monitoring identifies the process, listener, data path and host, so an alert cannot be mistaken for the other database.
- Keep a written inventory of versions, configuration files, ports, firewall rules, backup destinations and restore procedures.
Common failure modes and fixes
One service will not start
Read the service status and the daemon log first. Common causes include a permissions error on the data directory, a malformed configuration, an occupied port, insufficient disk space or an interrupted upgrade. Correct the underlying error, then restart through the service manager. Avoid deleting database files or changing ownership recursively until you know which account the package expects.
The application gets “connection refused”
Confirm that the correct daemon is running and listening on the address the application uses. A service bound only to loopback will reject connections arriving through another interface; a firewall can produce the same symptom. Check the application’s hostname, port and credentials, then test locally before testing from a remote client.
Recommended Free Tools
Both databases become slow at the same time
Look for a shared bottleneck rather than assuming both query engines degraded independently. Correlate request latency with memory pressure, swap, CPU run-queue length, disk latency and backup or maintenance jobs. If one process consistently consumes the resource, cap or reschedule the workload, tune it using workload measurements, add capacity or move that database to another host.
Disk space keeps disappearing
Account for database growth, indexes, journals, binary logs, application logs and backup staging files. Verify log rotation and retention, move backups off-host and expand storage before free space reaches the emergency threshold. Never remove database journals or logs blindly as a space-saving measure.
One server or separate servers?
| Decision axis | One Linux server | Separate servers or virtual machines |
|---|---|---|
| Total cost | Usually lower because hardware, operating-system overhead and monitoring are shared. | Usually higher because each environment needs its own capacity and maintenance. |
| Peak memory demand | Both workloads draw from the same pool and can contend during spikes. | Memory can be reserved independently for each database. |
| Storage I/O | Queries, journals and backups share the host’s devices unless storage is separately provisioned. | I/O contention can be isolated by assigning independent storage resources. |
| Failure-domain isolation | A host failure can take both databases offline. | A failure or reboot of one environment need not stop the other. |
| Backup and restore windows | Jobs compete with both production workloads on one machine. | Schedules and capacity can be managed independently. |
| Operational simplicity | Fewer systems and network paths to administer. | More systems, but clearer ownership and independent scaling. |
There is no universal winner. Compare the cost of another host with the cost of a shared outage, the measured peak resource demand, required maintenance windows and the recovery objective for each application.
Practical go-live checklist
- Verify that the Linux distribution, architecture and database releases are supported.
- Install MongoDB and MySQL from their documented vendor or distribution package paths.
- Confirm unique listeners and intentional bind addresses.
- Create separate users, directories, logs, permissions and backup jobs.
- Apply firewall rules that expose listeners only to necessary clients.
- Load-test the combined workload and record CPU, memory, storage latency and disk growth.
- Configure alerts for resource pressure, service failures, storage capacity and backup errors.
- Run a restore test for each database and record recovery time.
- Define the trigger for moving one database to another server, such as sustained resource exhaustion, unacceptable latency or a requirement for independent maintenance.
Bottom line
MongoDB and MySQL can coexist on one Linux server without an inherent port conflict: their documented defaults are different, and both have supported Linux service-management procedures. The decision should be based on measured combined workload, storage and recovery requirements rather than on installation compatibility alone. Keep the services separate in configuration and security, monitor the shared bottlenecks, test restores and move to separate hosts when contention or failure-domain risk outweighs the simplicity and cost savings of co-location.
