V Rising multiplayer is built around servers. You and your friends must play in the same server world, then use a clan as your co-op team. A private session is quickest for a small group, while a dedicated server keeps the world available without one player leaving the game running. Your character, castle, gear and unlocked abilities stay tied to the server where you created them, because official character transfers are not supported.

The practical choice is therefore about persistence and control: use a private session for occasional play, an official server for a Stunlock-managed world, or a private/dedicated server when your group needs its own rules, resets and administration.

How V Rising multiplayer is organised
V Rising is not a peer-to-peer lobby game in which a friend simply joins your current map. The server defines the world, its rules, persistence and progression. You first choose or create a server, create or load a vampire there, and then invite friends into that same world.
Stunlock Studios describes the game as allowing players to “Play solo or online with others as you fight for dominance.” Its current product description also says you can “Build, Hunt and Rise together in clans of up to four fellow Vampires or fight alone.” In practice, that means the clan is your normal co-op unit, but the server remains the larger container that controls what happens to your characters and castle.

If two players select different servers, they are in separate worlds even if they use the same character name. They will not see each other, share a castle or combine progression until they join the same server.
Which server type should you use?
Each option solves a different problem. The table compares the choices using the distinctions documented by Stunlock and the way those choices affect a small group.

A self-hosted server uses your own computer or server hardware and setup work. A rented server adds a provider fee and depends on that provider’s region, platform support and current terms. No universal prices are published, so check the provider’s current listing before committing.
How to start a private co-op game
A private session is the shortest path from “we want to play” to a shared castle. It is best when everyone normally plays at the same time and nobody needs the world to run while the host is away.
- Choose the player who will host. That person starts V Rising and creates or loads the private world. The host’s game client is responsible for starting the session.
- Create or load a vampire in that world. Character creation and progression belong to the selected server, so make sure everyone agrees on the world before investing time in a character.
- Have friends join the same session. Share the session invitation or server details shown by the game. A friend who joins a different listing has entered a different world, even if the settings look similar.
- Form a clan. Invite the other vampires through the in-game clan system. The official site advertises clans of up to four fellow vampires; the server’s own settings are the final authority if its listing specifies a different limit.
- Build and progress together. Clan members can coordinate castle construction, hunting and boss progression. Keep in mind that the resulting gear, abilities and castle belong to this server context.
The main drawback is availability. If the host closes the game, friends cannot treat that private session as an independently running world. For a group that plays on different schedules, a dedicated or rented server is usually the better fit.
How a dedicated server works
A dedicated server is a separate V Rising Dedicated Server application rather than a world hosted inside a player’s ordinary game session. Stunlock’s setup guide says the application can be launched from Steam’s Tools library, given a custom name and then shared with the people who should join.

Basic self-hosting sequence
- Install the V Rising Dedicated Server application from Steam’s Tools library.
- Launch the server process and assign the custom server name your friends will recognise.
- Set the rules your group wants, such as PvE or PvP and any available clan, reset, difficulty or loot options.
- Start the process before players connect, then share the server name or connection information required by your setup.
- Have each player select that server, create or load the appropriate vampire, and join the same clan once inside.
The exact configuration file names and network steps depend on your operating system and network, so use Stunlock’s current dedicated-server documentation for those implementation details. The important multiplayer distinction is that the server process can continue independently of any one player’s game client. If the machine and process remain available, the world can be available on the group’s schedule.
When rented hosting is easier
Rented hosting is useful when nobody wants to leave a computer running or manage updates and permissions. Stunlock’s PS5 FAQ, published December 1, 2025, names PocketHost and GPortal as providers currently supporting private PS5 hosting. Stunlock’s hosting guidance describes controls such as server status, settings, logs, configuration files, restarts, updates and permissions for supported services.
Availability is not universal: region, platform, current pricing and provider terms can change. Confirm those details for your platform before paying, and verify that the service supports the exact edition your group uses.
Official servers versus private servers
Official servers are hosted and moderated by Stunlock Studios. Their appeal is a known operator and an official ruleset, without your group having to maintain a server process. Private servers are operated by players, communities or hosting customers. Their administrators decide settings, moderation standards and reset policies.

Read the actual listing before creating a character. A private server’s custom rule may be more important to your experience than its name or region.
Administration and moderation
- Official: Stunlock controls the environment and moderation policy.
- Private: The owner or community handles rule enforcement, bans, restarts and communication.
- Dedicated self-hosted: Your group has the most direct control, but also carries responsibility for configuration, uptime, backups and updates.
PvE, PvP and informal alliances
Choose PvE when the group wants to cooperate against the game’s world without player combat being the focus. Choose PvP when fighting other vampires is part of the intended experience, and read the server’s rules about raids, wipes and teaming.

Stunlock’s official guidance says there are no rules against informal alliances between vampire clans, sometimes called “teaming,” on official servers. A private server may ban or restrict those alliances. If you want tightly controlled PvP, select a private community whose written rules match that expectation rather than assuming every server handles alliances the same way.
Clans: the co-op team structure
Clans are the practical way to organise a shared run. The official site advertises a maximum of four fellow vampires in a clan. That is the standard figure to plan around, but a server listing can advertise a different clan limit through its own settings.
What a clan is for
- Coordinating a shared castle-building project.
- Planning hunting trips and boss progression.
- Keeping the same players aligned on a single server world.
- Providing an in-game identity separate from the wider server population.
Clan membership does not make a character portable. If a member later starts on another server, that is a separate vampire and separate progression path unless the game officially adds a supported transfer feature.
Chat and communication on PC and PS5
Communication tools vary by platform. On PS5, Stunlock documents Global, Local and Clan text-chat channels. Its PS5 FAQ also says proximity chat is not currently supported on PS5 at the time of that publication, so players should not expect nearby-vampire voice communication through the game.
Stunlock’s PC chat guide documents both text and voice chat on official PC servers and on private servers hosted through PocketHost. The available channels and permissions can still depend on the server configuration, so check the server’s rules if a channel appears unavailable.
For a cross-platform group, agree on an external voice method only after confirming that everyone can legally and technically join the same server; platform compatibility is a separate question from whether a voice application works.

Can you move a V Rising character to another server?
No official character transfer is supported. Stunlock’s transfer guidance, updated July 3, 2025, states: “At this time, character transfers between servers are not supported in V Rising.” Your progression, gear, castle and unlocked abilities remain tied to the server where the character was created.
Joining another server normally means creating a new vampire there. The original character remains on the original server, assuming that world is still available. Starting over is therefore the cost of changing communities, rulesets or schedules.
Manual save copying on private infrastructure is described as unsupported and potentially unstable. Treat unofficial file manipulation as a risk to your world rather than a supported migration method, and do not promise friends that a castle or endgame inventory can be moved intact.

Is V Rising crossplay between PC and PS5?
Official material confirms V Rising availability on Steam and PS5, but the cited PS5 and server documentation does not clearly state a current Steam-to-PS5 crossplay policy. Do not assume that a PC player can join a PS5 player’s server, or the reverse, without a newer explicit platform statement from Stunlock.
Platform support and hosting support are also different questions. A provider may support private PS5 hosting while a particular PC-and-PS5 combination remains unconfirmed. Check the current server listing, the game’s platform-specific FAQ and the provider’s compatibility statement before your group creates characters.

“My friend cannot see my world.”
Confirm that both players selected the same server and that the host actually started the private session. A character created on another server will not appear in this world. For a dedicated server, verify that the server process is running and that the friend is using the current server name or connection details.

“The host is offline and we cannot play.”
That is expected for a private co-op session. Have the host start the game, or move the group to a dedicated or rented server that runs independently of a player’s client.

“We cannot invite a fifth player to the clan.”
The official clan description is up to four fellow vampires. Check the server listing because a private server may advertise a different limit, but do not assume the official four-player structure can be expanded on every server.
“My character and castle are missing on another server.”
They are still bound to the original server. Official transfers are not supported, so select the original listing to continue that vampire or create a new character on the new server.
“The server’s rules do not match our plan.”
Read the listing for PvE or PvP mode, clan limits, reset timing, difficulty, loot and teaming restrictions before committing. On a private server, contact the administrator or choose another community; on an official server, the official rules apply.
Choosing the right setup for your group
- Play together at fixed times: Start a private co-op session and let one player host.
- Play on different schedules: Use a dedicated server or rented private host so the world does not depend on one client being open.
- Want official moderation: Choose an official server and follow its published rules.
- Want custom PvE/PvP, resets or loot: Choose a private server whose listing explicitly provides those settings.
- Want to switch communities later: Plan for a new character, because official server-to-server transfers are unavailable.
- Mix PC and PS5: Verify a current crossplay statement first; Steam and PS5 availability alone does not prove cross-platform joining.
Once everyone agrees on the platform, server, rules and schedule, create characters in that world and form the clan. That decision prevents the most expensive mistake in V Rising multiplayer: building a character and castle on a server your friends cannot or will not use.
