Capcom removed GFWL support in a Steam update dated February 27, 2023. If the game will not launch or is showing a black screen, that alone does not identify the cause; use the symptom-based checks below rather than starting with an old GFWL fix.
What changed in the Steam version
Capcom’s February 27, 2023 Steam update explicitly lists “Removed Games for Windows Live support.” It also added support for local split-screen co-op. That change applies to the updated Steam version; it should not be generalized to every historical retail or GFWL installation. For current Steam users, instructions to install GFWL are not a sensible first step.

Resident Evil 5 will not launch: troubleshoot in order
1. Pin down what “won’t launch” means
Note whether Steam briefly shows the game as running and then stops, whether a game window or black screen appears, whether an error message is shown, or whether the game opens and then freezes. These symptoms can point to different checks. Record the exact message if one appears.
2. Check requirements and update Windows and graphics drivers
Compare your PC with the game’s listed system requirements. Capcom warns that a system below minimum requirements may perform poorly or fail to run, and recommends updating Windows and graphics drivers. Capcom does not guarantee normal operation on unsupported configurations, which can include some mobile or external GPUs and pre-release Windows Insider builds.

3. Verify the game files in Steam
Use Steam’s built-in file verification option for Resident Evil 5 to check for missing or damaged files. This is a useful repair step that does not assume GFWL is involved.

4. Check security software and permissions carefully
Capcom notes that security software can sometimes block a game executable. Review whether it has quarantined or blocked the game, and use a targeted exclusion only if appropriate. Do not broadly disable protection. Capcom also suggests trying Steam—and, if needed, the game executable—as administrator.
5. For a black screen, display issue or freeze, check graphics configuration
Make sure Windows and the graphics driver are current, check that the game is using the intended GPU on a system with both integrated and discrete graphics, and review display settings. Capcom’s game-specific FAQ says outdated video drivers or DirectX may contribute to display trouble or freezing.

6. For cutscene playback trouble on Windows N or KN, check media codecs
Some cutscenes use Windows media codecs. Capcom notes that Windows N/KN editions may not include Windows Media Player codecs by default and recommends Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack for playback problems. This is a specific check for cutscene or media playback symptoms, not a general launch fix.
