For ordinary ranged combat, a bow is the better default: Power increases arrow damage, and Infinity can conserve normal arrows. A trident is the more versatile choice when you want one weapon for melee and ranged attacks, or when you want its distinctive enchantments—Loyalty, Channeling, or Riptide.
Which is better for ranged combat?
Choose a bow if your main goal is to attack from a distance. Its dedicated enchantments support that role: Power increases arrow damage, Infinity prevents normal arrows from being consumed, and Flame ignites arrows.
A trident can be thrown, but the available official descriptions do not establish a current, directly comparable damage or damage-per-second figure for bows and tridents. There is no evidence here for a numerical winner across Minecraft editions, versions, and situations.
When should I use a trident instead of a bow?
When you need both melee and ranged attacks
A trident can be swung in melee or thrown, so it can serve both roles without switching weapons. Minecraft’s official Taking Inventory: Trident article says tridents “deal more melee damage than a diamond sword.” The same article warns that their durability is comparable to an iron sword’s, so that melee strength comes with a durability trade-off.

When a trident enchantment fits the situation
- Loyalty: returns a thrown trident to its wielder.
- Channeling: can summon lightning when a thrown trident hits a mob during a thunderstorm.
- Riptide: launches the player when the trident is used in water or rain.
These effects give the trident options a bow does not offer, but they do not make it the better general-purpose ranged weapon.

Does the answer change by edition?
It can, particularly when considering Impaling. Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock stable enchantment documentation describes Impaling as adding damage to mobs in water or rain. Minecraft Help describes extra damage to mobs that spawn naturally in the ocean. Those descriptions differ, so check the current rules for your edition and version rather than assuming one target condition applies everywhere.

Which should you choose?
- Pick a bow for regular ranged combat, especially if Power or Infinity suits your play style.
- Pick a trident when switching between melee and ranged attacks matters, or when you can make use of Loyalty, Channeling, or Riptide.
- Decide by edition and situation if Impaling is central to your choice; its target conditions are described differently in the cited sources.
