Keep one public domain and place a global routing layer in front of the US and European servers. That layer can be a managed layer-7 reverse proxy or CDN, which is usually the simplest operational design, or latency- and health-aware DNS, which sends clients directly to a regional server. Configure both regions as origins, terminate HTTPS for the custom domain, expose real application health checks, and choose whether both regions serve traffic (active-active) or one waits as a standby (active-passive).

What “one domain” means in a two-continent deployment
A domain name is an addressing layer, not a promise that every request reaches one physical machine. The same hostname can represent a global entry point that decides which origin should receive each request. Your US and European servers keep their own stable public endpoints, while players and other clients use a single hostname such as api.example.com.

- HTTP reverse proxy or CDN: The client connects to a nearby edge point of presence. The edge terminates TLS, applies policy, and forwards the request to a healthy US or European origin.
- Latency- or geolocation-aware DNS: DNS returns the address of one regional endpoint. The client then connects directly to that server.
Both approaches support one domain across continents. The important design questions are how quickly traffic must move after a failure, whether you need caching or a web application firewall, which protocols you use, and how your data behaves when two regions are active.

Choose the routing layer
Managed reverse proxy or CDN
A managed global reverse proxy is a cloud-based layer-7 load balancer. Azure Front Door, for example, can distribute traffic across regions and endpoints, including publicly reachable origins outside Azure. It supports custom domains, TLS termination, caching, a web application firewall, path-based routing, and health-based origin selection. This gives you one edge entry point for certificates and application policy.
CloudFront can sit behind a Route 53 alias. AWS says users are automatically sent to the CloudFront edge location that provides the lowest latency. Cloudflare provides an Anycast edge for public hostnames through Tunnel; running multiple cloudflared replicas under one tunnel UUID supplies basic tunnel redundancy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis pattern hides origin addresses from ordinary users, centralizes security controls, and lets you route different paths independently. For example, a web front end, game-account API, and patch manifest can use separate origin groups while retaining one parent domain. It also introduces another service to configure and monitor, and the edge must support the protocols your application actually uses.
Latency- and health-aware DNS
DNS routing is simpler when clients should connect directly to regional servers. Amazon Route 53 latency-based routing returns the endpoint with the lowest measured latency to the DNS query’s origin. When health checks are enabled and that lowest-latency record is unhealthy, Route 53 returns the next-lowest-latency healthy endpoint.
DNS does not proxy the connection. It cannot terminate your application TLS session, cache responses, apply an edge WAF, or rewrite HTTP paths. Recursive resolvers and client devices cache DNS answers, so a changed answer is not observed everywhere immediately. The effective failover interval depends on your TTL, resolver behavior, and the provider’s health-detection interval.

Decide between active-active and active-passive
Active-active
Both the US and European servers receive production traffic. A performance policy can send each request to the region that is expected to respond fastest, while weights can deliberately split traffic for capacity or a controlled rollout.
Active-active is not just a routing setting. Your data layer must tolerate concurrent use from both regions or partition ownership clearly. You also need a session strategy that does not depend on one server’s local memory. Shared session storage, signed stateless sessions, or deliberate regional affinity are common design categories; the correct choice depends on the application.
Writes require particular care. Replication delay, conflicting updates, and cache invalidation can produce different results for users who move between regions. Define which region is authoritative for each write, or use a data system designed for the consistency model you require.
Active-passive
One region serves production traffic while the other remains ready as a standby. A priority or failover policy sends traffic to the standby only when the primary is unhealthy or you invoke a planned switch.
This model avoids most concurrent-write conflicts and is easier to reason about when only one writer is safe. The trade-off is unused standby capacity and a recovery transition. Standby data, configuration, certificates, and content must be kept current, and the failover procedure must be exercised rather than assumed.

Build the two-region setup step by step
- Create both regional servers. Deploy the same application version and configuration baseline in the US and Europe. Give each server a stable public IP or hostname that the routing service can reach.
- Select the global entry point. Use a managed reverse proxy/CDN when you need edge TLS, caching, WAF, path routing, or fast application-layer health decisions. Use latency- or health-aware DNS when direct client-to-origin connections are acceptable.
- Attach the custom domain. Add the hostname to the global service or create the regional DNS records required by your provider. Keep the public hostname identical for both regions.
- Install and validate certificates. Bind a certificate for the custom domain at the reverse-proxy edge, or install a valid certificate on each regional server for direct DNS routing. Confirm that the original
Hostheader and SNI name reach the correct virtual host at every origin. - Register both origins. Add the US and European endpoints to one origin group. Set the provider’s connection timeout, retry behavior, and protocol options to values your application can tolerate.
- Publish a health endpoint. Expose a lightweight HTTPS path such as
/health. It should verify the components required to serve a real request, not merely that a TCP port is open. Azure’s guidance recommends health probes and notes that HEAD probes reduce origin load when your service supports them. - Set the routing policy. Choose performance or latency routing, explicit geography, weighted traffic, or priority failover. Record which policy is used for each hostname so an emergency change is unambiguous.
- Design state before enabling both regions. Document database replication, write ownership, session handling, cache invalidation, and what happens when a request is retried in the other region.
- Test and observe. Simulate an unhealthy application in each region, verify that traffic moves as intended, and confirm recovery when the origin returns. Keep a rollback and manual-failover procedure accessible to the operations team.
Make health checks represent application readiness
A server can accept TCP connections while its database pool is exhausted, its game-service dependency is unavailable, or its build is serving errors. A probe that checks only an open port will therefore produce false confidence. The endpoint should return success only when the instance can handle the class of request that the routing layer will send.
Keep the probe inexpensive. A small HTTPS response avoids using a full game session or an expensive database query on every interval. If the application cannot serve traffic without a particular dependency, check that dependency with a bounded timeout. Return a failure quickly when the instance should be removed from rotation.
Probe geography matters. Cloudflare Health Checks allows selecting one to thirteen regions, and each selected region runs checks from three data centers. A single monitoring location can miss a regional network problem, so select more than one geography when your availability requirements justify it. The published provider behavior does not establish a universal failover time; detection intervals, thresholds, TTLs, and resolver caching all contribute.
Understand latency, DNS caching, and failover timing
“Nearest” is not a fixed distance calculation. A routing provider measures or estimates network latency from its edge or from the DNS query origin. A player in one part of the US may therefore be sent to a different region than a player near a congested route, and a recursive resolver may make the DNS decision from its own location rather than the player’s device.
With a reverse proxy, the client reaches an edge point of presence and the edge chooses an origin. With DNS, the client receives an answer that can be cached by recursive resolvers, operating systems, and applications. Lowering TTL can reduce the time stale answers persist, but it does not eliminate resolver behavior or health-detection delay, and it can increase DNS query volume.

Plan failover as a range rather than a single promise. Measure the provider’s probe interval and threshold, add the configured TTL, and allow for resolver and client caching. During an incident, existing long-lived connections may remain on the failed or degraded path; routing generally affects new connections unless your edge explicitly supports connection draining.
Handle sessions, databases, and caches deliberately
Sessions
If login or matchmaking state exists only in one server’s memory, a user routed to the other continent may appear logged out or lose state. Use a shared or replicated session mechanism, stateless signed tokens with appropriate expiry, or controlled regional affinity. Affinity can reduce movement between regions, but it also makes failover less transparent and can concentrate load.
Database writes
Active-active operation needs a defined consistency model. Decide whether both regions may write the same records, whether writes are partitioned by account or geography, and how conflicts are resolved. If only one writer is safe, active-passive or an explicit primary-writer policy is simpler. Replication lag must be visible to operators so they know what data a failover can safely expose.

Caches and downloadable content
Edge caching can reduce origin load for immutable assets and public responses. When content changes, define invalidation or versioning rules before enabling caching. A regional cache can otherwise continue serving an older result after the application has switched origins.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Secure the edge and the origins
Terminate HTTPS for the custom domain at the global entry point when using a reverse proxy, and use encrypted, authenticated connections from the edge to each origin where supported. Verify that the origin selects the right certificate and virtual host from the forwarded hostname. For direct DNS routing, every regional server must independently present a certificate valid for the same public name.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Restrict origin access to the edge’s source ranges or authenticated requests when your provider supports that control. Keep administrative interfaces off the public game or API hostname. Apply rate limits and WAF rules at the edge, but retain origin-side validation because a misrouted or bypassed request must not become a security exception.
Test from several geographies
- Resolve the public hostname from North America, Europe, and at least one additional monitoring location.
- Confirm which origin receives a test request by using a response header or an internal trace identifier; do not expose sensitive server details to players.
- Stop the application, not just the network port, in the US and verify that traffic moves to Europe.
- Repeat with Europe unavailable, then restore it and verify that the policy returns traffic according to your chosen priority or latency rules.
- Check long-lived connections, WebSockets, downloads, authentication, and write operations during both normal routing and failover.
- Compare edge latency, origin latency, 4xx/5xx rates, probe results, certificate expiry, and DNS changes in one dashboard.
Cloudflare’s Anycast model directs end-user requests to a nearby data center, but proximity alone is not proof that your origin is healthy. Monitor both the edge and the two applications behind it.
Common failure modes and fixes
Both regions answer, but users still see errors
Check the origin’s virtual-host binding, certificate name, forwarded Host header, and firewall rules. A healthy probe that uses a different hostname or path than real traffic can mask this configuration error.
Failover appears slow
Inspect DNS TTL and recursive-resolver caching if you use DNS routing. For a reverse proxy, inspect probe interval, failure threshold, connection draining, and existing persistent connections. Do not promise a fixed recovery time without measuring these settings together.
Users lose sessions after a regional switch
Move session state out of local memory or adopt a stateless design. If you intentionally use affinity, document what happens when the preferred region is unavailable.
Data differs between continents
Measure replication lag and identify which region owns each write. Add conflict handling or change to active-passive when the workload cannot safely support concurrent writers.
Recommended Free Tools
Only one region is ever selected
Review weights, priority, health status, and the actual location from which DNS queries or edge decisions are made. A latency policy does not guarantee an even split; it selects the endpoint estimated to be fastest and healthy.
Which design should you use?
- Choose a managed reverse proxy/CDN when you need one place for certificates, WAF rules, caching, path-based routing, and health-aware application decisions, or when you want to keep origins less exposed.
- Choose latency- or geolocation-aware DNS when direct connections are acceptable, your servers can independently handle TLS and security, and the slower DNS-based failover behavior fits your recovery objective.
- Choose active-active when your data and session architecture explicitly support concurrent regional traffic.
- Choose active-passive when one writer is safer, operational simplicity matters more than using all capacity, or your recovery process can tolerate a controlled transition.
Microsoft describes Azure Front Door as a service that delivers applications faster and more reliably, while its global application guidance distinguishes that layer-7 approach from Traffic Manager, which Microsoft calls “a DNS-based load balancer.” AWS documents the latency-routing fallback behavior described above. These services demonstrate the available patterns; none determines the right database topology, failover time, or provider for an unspecified game or web application.
