Most failed ThemeForest installations have a straightforward cause: the downloaded package is not the installable theme ZIP, the server rejects a large upload, or the item is not a WordPress theme at all. Download Installable WordPress file only, upload that inner ZIP through Appearance → Themes → Add New → Upload, and use FTP/SFTP or host support when WordPress cannot accept the file or write its theme directory.

| WordPress symptom | Most likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| “The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet” | The full ThemeForest download package was uploaded instead of the installable theme ZIP. | Extract the wrapper ZIP and upload the inner WordPress theme ZIP. |
| “The link you followed has expired” | The upload exceeds a PHP size limit, or the request runs out of memory or execution time. | Compare the ZIP size with upload_max_filesize and post_max_size; ask the host to raise limits if necessary. |
| ZIP or file-format error | The item may be an Elementor Template Kit rather than a WordPress theme, or the download may be damaged. | Confirm the item type, then download a fresh copy and use the correct importer. |
| Permission or directory error | The web server cannot create or modify files in the themes directory. | Install through FTP/SFTP and have the host correct ownership or permissions. |
| Installation succeeds but activation fails | A plugin or theme conflict, incompatible PHP version, exhausted memory, corrupted files, or a timeout. | Switch temporarily to a default theme and isolate the conflict. |
Fix the “missing style.css” error
Why WordPress shows this message
A WordPress theme must contain a stylesheet named style.css in the theme’s top-level directory. ThemeForest’s All files and documentation download is a wrapper containing documentation, licensing material and one or more installable files. It is not itself the theme that WordPress expects. Uploading that wrapper commonly produces the missing-style-sheet error because WordPress cannot find style.css where it is looking.
Seeing the error does not usually mean the author forgot the stylesheet. It usually means the wrong ZIP level was selected.

Download the correct archive
- Open your ThemeForest downloads and choose the item’s download option.
- Select Installable WordPress file only. This is the archive intended for the WordPress theme uploader.
- Save the ZIP without opening or re-compressing it.
If you already downloaded All files and documentation, unzip that outer archive on your computer. Look for the theme-specific ZIP inside it. The inner file is the one to upload; do not upload the outer package again.
Check the ZIP before uploading
Open the archive only to verify its structure. The theme folder should contain style.css at its top level, alongside the theme’s PHP files and other assets. A common mistake is finding another nested folder and uploading a ZIP that still contains the documentation wrapper. Keep the original installable ZIP intact for the dashboard upload.

Exact upload path
- Sign in to WordPress with an account that can install themes.
- Go to Appearance → Themes.
- Select Add New, then choose Upload.
- Click Choose File and select the Installable WordPress file only ZIP.
- Click Install Now and wait for WordPress to complete the upload and extraction.
- Choose Activate only after the installation reports success.
Custom theme uploads are available on self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org). On WordPress.com, the plan must support custom uploads; the documented requirement is a Business plan. If the Upload button is absent, verify the site platform and plan before troubleshooting the ZIP.

What a successful install looks like
WordPress returns to the themes screen with the new theme listed. The theme directory appears under wp-content/themes, and the theme can be activated from the theme details panel. If WordPress immediately reports a stylesheet, ZIP, or extraction error, stop and return to package verification rather than trying activation repeatedly.
Resolve “The link you followed has expired” and rejected uploads
What the message usually means
During a theme upload, WordPress sends the ZIP to the server and asks PHP to process it. The “link you followed has expired” notice often indicates that the request exceeded a server limit; it does not necessarily mean a ThemeForest download URL has expired. Large theme packages can exceed the maximum upload size, the maximum total POST size, available PHP memory, or the maximum execution time.
Compare the archive with PHP limits
upload_max_filesizelimits the size of an individual uploaded file.post_max_sizelimits the complete POST request and must be at least as large as the upload limit, with room for the request itself.memory_limitcontrols PHP memory available while WordPress unpacks and processes the archive.max_execution_timelimits how long PHP can run before the request is terminated.
Compare the ZIP’s actual size with the values shown by your hosting control panel or WordPress Site Health information. A file can be below upload_max_filesize and still fail because post_max_size, memory or execution time is lower.

Values commonly used for large imports
WordPress documentation gives example settings of 300M memory_limit, 200M post_max_size, 100M upload_max_filesize and 600 seconds max_execution_time for large imports. These are example values, not a guarantee that every host permits them or that every theme needs them. Your host’s enforced PHP configuration takes precedence.
For WordPress administration and theme operations, the WordPress Hosting Handbook documents a 256M default for WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT. A host can override PHP memory at the server level, so changing a WordPress configuration value alone may have no effect.
When you cannot change the limits
Many shared and managed hosts lock PHP settings. Ask support to confirm the effective values for upload_max_filesize, post_max_size, memory_limit, max_execution_time and WordPress’s administrative memory limit. Include the exact ZIP size and the full error text. Requesting a limit increase from the host is safer than repeatedly editing configuration files without knowing which layer is enforcing the restriction.

Install manually with FTP or SFTP
When manual installation is the right fallback
Use FTP or SFTP when the dashboard uploader is blocked by file-size limits, times out during extraction, or cannot write to the themes directory. This bypasses the browser upload step, but it does not remove PHP compatibility or permission problems. You still need the actual theme directory, not the documentation wrapper.
Prepare the correct directory
- Extract the Installable WordPress file only ZIP on your computer.
- Locate the single theme folder that contains
style.cssat its top level. - Do not upload a folder that contains only documentation, licensing files or another nested ZIP.
Upload to the themes directory
- Connect to the site with an FTP or SFTP client using credentials from your host.
- Open the WordPress installation’s
wp-content/themesdirectory. - Upload the complete extracted theme folder into that directory.
- Wait for every file and subdirectory to finish transferring; interrupting the transfer creates an incomplete theme.
- Return to Appearance → Themes in WordPress and activate the uploaded theme.
The web server must be able to read the files and write to directories required during updates or setup. If WordPress reports that a directory is not writable, ask the host to correct ownership and permissions rather than applying broad, unsafe permissions yourself.
Make sure the item is actually a WordPress theme
Theme versus Elementor Template Kit
Envato also distributes Elementor Template Kits. A Template Kit is design data for Elementor, not a legacy WordPress theme. It does not install through the normal theme uploader and should not be expected to contain a conventional theme’s style.css structure.
Best Value
If the download is identified as a Template Kit, use the importer intended for that kit and the Elementor environment it requires. The Envato help article explains the ZIP and file-format errors that occur when a kit is imported through the wrong method: Envato’s Template Kit format-error guide.
Redownload a damaged package
If the item is confirmed to be a WordPress theme but WordPress cannot open the ZIP, the archive may be incomplete or corrupted. Delete the local copy, download it again, and compare the new file’s size with the download shown by your browser. Extracting and re-zipping the package can also change its structure, so use the publisher’s original installable ZIP whenever possible.
Fix an installation that completes but will not activate
Test without changing the site permanently
If activation produces a fatal error, a blank page or an admin error, switch temporarily to a default WordPress theme. This separates a theme problem from a site-wide problem and keeps the site accessible while you investigate. Record the exact error before refreshing or deleting anything.
Check the common causes
- PHP compatibility: the theme or one of its bundled components may not support the PHP version configured by the host.
- Plugin conflict: a plugin can collide with the new theme’s functions, scripts or required components. Disable plugins temporarily, then reactivate them one at a time to identify the conflict.
- Memory exhaustion: an “Allowed Memory Size Exhausted” error means WordPress does not have enough memory for the requested operation. Check both the PHP
memory_limitand WordPress’s administrativeWP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT. - Incomplete or corrupted files: reinstall from a fresh, verified ZIP or re-upload the complete directory through SFTP.
- Maximum execution time: a large setup routine can stop before it finishes when
max_execution_timeis too low.
Isolate a plugin conflict methodically
- Switch to a default theme and confirm the dashboard works.
- Deactivate all plugins that are not required for access to the site.
- Activate the ThemeForest theme.
- Reactivate plugins one at a time, testing the site after each activation.
- When the failure returns, leave the responsible plugin disabled and check for an updated compatible version or assistance from its developer.
If the theme still fails with every plugin disabled, focus on PHP compatibility, memory, execution time and the completeness of the uploaded files.
Quick Recap
Use the right escalation path
| What you can access | Best next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress dashboard and a correctly sized ZIP | Use Appearance → Themes → Add New → Upload. | This is the simplest supported installation route. |
| Dashboard, but the ZIP exceeds a displayed limit | Ask the host to raise PHP size, memory or execution limits, or use FTP/SFTP. | The browser uploader cannot override server-enforced values. |
| FTP/SFTP credentials but no reliable dashboard upload | Upload the extracted theme folder to wp-content/themes. |
It avoids the HTTP upload and extraction step. |
| No ability to change PHP settings or file permissions | Contact the hosting provider with the exact error, ZIP size and requested settings. | Only the host can change locked server configuration or ownership. |
| An Elementor Template Kit rather than a theme | Use the kit’s Elementor importer. | A Template Kit is design data, not a theme package. |
Prevent the next failed installation
- Keep the original download and identify whether it is a theme, a wrapper package or a Template Kit before uploading.
- Prefer the exact Installable WordPress file only archive for dashboard installation.
- Check the ZIP size against both
upload_max_filesizeandpost_max_size, not just one limit. - Confirm available memory and execution time when the theme includes a large setup wizard or bundled content.
- Maintain FTP/SFTP access so a server-side upload remains available if the dashboard route fails.
- Take a backup before activation, especially on a production site, and test the new theme while a default theme remains available as a recovery option.
- Keep a record of the active PHP version, memory limits and the exact error message; those details let hosting support identify a locked setting quickly.
A concise recovery sequence
- Read the exact WordPress error.
- If it mentions
style.css, extract the wrapper and select the inner Installable WordPress file only ZIP. - If it says the link has expired, compare the archive with
upload_max_filesizeandpost_max_size, then investigate memory and execution time. - If the file-format error remains, verify that the item is a WordPress theme and not an Elementor Template Kit; redownload a damaged archive.
- If the dashboard cannot upload or extract the file, transfer the extracted theme directory through FTP/SFTP into
wp-content/themes. - If activation fails, switch to a default theme and test PHP compatibility, memory, timeouts and plugins one variable at a time.
- Escalate locked limits, ownership and permissions to the hosting provider with the error text and file size.
