Yes—but the method depends on the game. In Oblivion, join the Thieves Guild and sell stolen goods to a fence. In Skyrim, use a fence or unlock the Speech perk called Fence to sell to merchants. In The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), only fences buy stolen items; use laundering instead when you want to keep an item and remove its stolen status.
How stolen-item sales differ by game
| Game | Who buys stolen items | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Oblivion | Thieves Guild fences | Join the Thieves Guild, then sell to a fence. Honest merchants will not buy stolen goods. (Bethesda Support; Oblivion PC Manual, p. 41) |
| Skyrim | Fences; merchants if you have the Fence Speech perk | Sell to a fence, or unlock the perk to broaden merchant access. This mechanic is described by a community-maintained reference. (UESP) |
| The Elder Scrolls Online | Fences in Outlaws Refuges | Go to an Outlaws Refuge to sell the item, or launder it if you want to keep it. (Bethesda Support; Bethesda Support) |
Oblivion: join the Thieves Guild and find a fence
Ordinary merchants will not accept stolen goods. The Oblivion PC manual says stolen items carry a red-hand icon and do not appear in the Barter Menu for honest merchants; certain Thieves Guild members buy them instead. Bethesda Support’s documented starting route is to find Armand Cristophe in the Imperial City Waterfront District at midnight in-game and join the Thieves Guild.
After joining, you can sell stolen items to fences in several cities. Bethesda lists these locations and characters:
- Leyawiin: Dar Jee
- Imperial City or Chorrol: Fathis Ules
- Bravil: Luciana Galena
- Bruma: Ongar the World-Weary
- Anvil: Orrin
Selling to a fence and avoiding arrest are separate matters: the manual warns that guards can confiscate stolen goods if they catch you with a bounty.

Skyrim: use a fence or the Fence perk
Fences buy stolen items in Skyrim. The Speech perk named Fence lets you sell stolen merchandise to merchants, expanding your options beyond fences. A community-maintained reference describes these routes and associates fences with the Thieves Guild; it is not an official Bethesda support guide. Exact access may depend on quest progression, so check your Speech tree and the dialogue options available at the merchant or fence in your edition.

In ESO, stolen items are marked in your inventory, cannot be banked or traded, and cannot be sold to regular merchants. Bethesda Support says, “Stolen items can only be sold to a fence.” Fences are inside Outlaws Refuges, which are behind marked doors in large cities.
Rank #2
If you want to retain an item rather than sell it, choose the fence’s laundering option. Bethesda Support says a laundered item no longer appears as stolen and will not be lost if you are apprehended or killed by guards. Laundering and selling are subject to a daily transaction limit; the fence interface shows how many transactions remain.
