Its appeal depends less on conventional platforming than on whether you enjoy learning and chaining that movement while exploring a folklore-inspired world. This guide weighs the game’s documented design and platform details; it does not claim first-hand playtesting.
What kind of game is Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus?
Bō is a single-player action platformer with Metroidvania elements, not a purely linear sequence of levels. Steam describes an interconnected world where you explore, fight in aerial combat and unlock mystical abilities. As you gain abilities, routes open up and give you reasons to revisit earlier areas. The developer calls it a 2.5D Metroidvania, combining hand-drawn 2D art with a three-dimensional presentation.
The game launched on Steam on July 17, 2024. Steam lists Squid Shock Studios as developer and Balor Games as publisher; the studio press kit also names Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as platforms. Platform availability and editions can differ by region.
How does Bō’s movement work?
Movement is the game’s defining design question: Bō does not have a default double jump. Instead, striking an enemy or object in midair with the Equinox Staff refreshes an aerial jump. A downward strike while descending triggers a pogo bounce, which also resets the jump. This lets you build height and continue across gaps by chaining actions rather than relying on a fixed double-jump input.

#1 Best Overall
Chris Stair, Squid Shock Studios’ creative director, describes the early technique as the “Bump.” In a PlayStation Blog post dated July 15, 2024, Stair explains that the midair strike grants a jump, while the downward strike bounces Bō and resets the jump ability. That makes responsiveness and consistency especially important when assessing the platforming: a missed strike can interrupt a chain, while a clear, satisfying loop can make traversal feel skillful.
The staff also gains new forms, including the Mochi Mallet, Lotus Dash and Grappling Gun. Together with combat and the ability-gated map, they give the movement system more jobs than simply clearing platforming gaps.

What are exploration, combat and progression like?
Exploration follows a familiar Metroidvania pattern: abilities unlock routes in an interconnected world, encouraging backtracking as your toolkit grows. Whether that structure feels rewarding depends on how much you enjoy finding newly accessible paths and applying movement skills across the map.
Combat is designed to work in the air as well as on the ground. Daruma dolls can be collected, upgraded and summoned to help in combat, and bosses test the same broader action toolkit. The free Tanuki Kabuki update, released November 13, 2025, added Boss Rush mode according to the developer. Steam also advertises collectibles and a quest.

What are the setting and art style?
The world draws on Japanese folklore and yokai, presented through hand-drawn characters and scenery. The developer describes locations including haunted bathhouses, a Japanese-inspired metropolis and forest regions. Stair has said Bō’s character draws partly on stories of Princess Kaguya and Momotaro, while some monsters are creative reinterpretations of folktales. The result is a stylized folklore setting rather than a claim to be a literal retelling of any one story.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is likely to enjoy Bō?
- Consider it if you like movement-led platforming, learning a distinctive traversal system, ability-gated exploration and hand-drawn worlds inspired by folklore.
- Think carefully if you prefer straightforward jumps, a linear campaign or combat that does not ask you to use aerial movement. The central traversal loop depends on striking targets to refresh jumps and bouncing off downward attacks.
- For a review, focus on how responsive the strike-and-reset loop feels, whether map revisits reward exploration, how bosses and Daruma allies complement aerial combat, and how the art and setting work in motion. These are useful evaluation criteria, not claims of measured performance.
Platforms, editions and practical details
Steam lists full controller support and recommends playing with a controller; it also lists ten interface and subtitle languages. A controller is a recommendation, not a requirement. The studio lists Steam, Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but the relevant store should be checked for current local availability and language support.
Physical editions require extra regional care. Game Source Entertainment announced Asian Switch and PS5 versions for July 18, 2024, with physical preorders opening, and Marvelous’s Japanese product page lists package editions. Those sources establish regional releases, not current North American availability or stock from a particular retailer.
The Japanese Marvelous page lists a digital deluxe edition containing the game, a digital artbook and an original soundtrack of 35 tracks. That bundle is specific to the Japanese listing; do not assume the same package or language options elsewhere.
