A 10th Edition unit can generally shoot and then charge—but advancing, falling back, and already being engaged change what it can do.

Yes. In Warhammer 40,000 10th Edition, a unit can shoot in the Shooting phase and then charge in the Charge phase, provided it did not Advance or Fall Back that turn and is not already within Engagement Range when it declares the charge. These rules are specific to 10th Edition; Games Workshop announced 11th Edition on June 1, 2026, so check that edition’s rules if that is what you are playing.

Can a unit shoot and then charge?

The turn sequence places the Shooting phase before the Charge phase, and shooting does not by itself make a unit ineligible to charge. A unit that has not Advanced or Fallen Back, and is not already within Engagement Range, can generally shoot and then declare a charge later that turn.

The official Games Workshop Warhammer 40,000: Quick Start Guide gives the key charge restrictions: “Units that Advanced or Fell Back this turn cannot charge, nor can any that are within Engagement Range of the enemy.”

How movement and engagement affect the answer

Unit’s situation this turn Can it shoot? Can it declare a charge?
Did not Advance or Fall Back; not in Engagement Range Generally yes, subject to normal weapon and target rules. Generally yes, after shooting.
Advanced Only with Assault weapons under the general rule. No.
Fell Back Generally no. Generally no.
Already within Engagement Range Generally no, with Pistol and Monster/Vehicle exceptions. No.

If the unit Advanced

An Advanced unit cannot charge that turn. If it has Assault weapons, it can still shoot, but only with those weapons. Assault is an exception to the restriction on shooting after an Advance; it does not also permit a charge. The Quick Start Guide states: “Units that Advance cannot shoot this turn (except with Assault weapons) and cannot charge this turn.”

If the unit Fell Back

The general rule in the Quick Start Guide says a unit that Fell Back cannot shoot or charge that turn. If a datasheet or another special rule appears to grant an exception, use that specific rule rather than assuming the general restriction applies unchanged.

If the unit is already engaged

A unit within Engagement Range cannot declare a charge. It also generally cannot shoot, though eligible Pistol attacks against an enemy it is engaged with and the Big Guns Never Tire rule for Monsters and Vehicles can allow shooting in specified circumstances. These shooting exceptions do not create a general permission to charge while already engaged. Consult the relevant weapon and unit rules for their restrictions.

Which edition does this answer cover?

This answer applies to Warhammer 40,000 10th Edition. Games Workshop announced on June 1, 2026 that 11th Edition was days away and that its new core rules were available. If your game uses 11th Edition, consult those rules rather than carrying these 10th Edition restrictions over without checking.
