Yes—Ninja Gaiden 4 is designed to be a reasonable starting point, even though it is a direct sequel and keeps the series’ demanding action-combat identity. Its new protagonist, Yakumo, was introduced in part to make the series more approachable, and the game offers difficulty options, combat assists, and training. Those supports make it easier to learn; they are not a promise that the game will feel easy.
Do you need to play the earlier Ninja Gaiden games first?
No. PlatinumGames producer and director Yuji Nakao said Yakumo was created partly to make the series more approachable to new players. He is a young ninja prodigy whose fate is connected to Ryu Hayabusa, the franchise’s established hero. That gives newcomers a new lead to follow without removing Ryu from the story.

There is a continuity caveat: Xbox Wire describes Ninja Gaiden 4 as a direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3. Ryu appears throughout, plays a significant role, and is playable. The available official material does not establish that every earlier plot detail is unnecessary, so players who want the full context may prefer to catch up. But it does not present prior series knowledge as a prerequisite for beginning with Yakumo.
What makes it approachable—and what does not
Support for learning the combat
Xbox Wire lists Hero, Normal, and Hard difficulty modes, automatic evasion and defense assists, and a dedicated training mode. These give players ways to adjust the challenge and practice. If you are new to action games, Hero mode and the assists are the most obvious places to start; training offers a space to learn the controls and mechanics.

A challenging series identity remains
The official descriptions also frame the game as a challenge for action veterans. The difficulty choices and assists should be understood as learning supports, not evidence that combat is effortless or that every newcomer will find it comfortable. There is no published newcomer-success statistic or independent assessment here that can predict how difficult it will feel to you.
How Ninja Gaiden 4’s combat connects old and new
Yakumo brings new mechanics: his Bloodraven Form and Bloodbind Gauge connect with the Obliteration Technique and Blood Essence. Ryu, meanwhile, retains a familiar action feel. PlatinumGames describes the design as combining Team NINJA’s combat approach with PlatinumGames’ action style, while adding mechanics intended to work together. That blend gives the game its own learning curve rather than making it simply a replay of an earlier entry.

Ninja Gaiden 4 was released on October 21, 2025. PlatinumGames lists Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5; confirm the relevant platform store for your region, since availability can vary.

If you want a modern entry with a new protagonist and built-in ways to tune and practice combat, Ninja Gaiden 4 is a sensible place to begin. If you expect a gentle action game, the series’ challenge may still be a mismatch: the developers’ newcomer-focused intent does not guarantee an easy experience. You can begin with Yakumo, use the available supports, and decide from there whether you want to explore Ryu’s earlier story.
