Possibly—but “patched” can mean two different things. A system update is not the same as a hardware revision that closes the original RCM exploit. The answer depends on your console’s hardware and, for some software-based methods, its firmware. A system-version number alone cannot establish whether your Switch is vulnerable.
What does “patched” mean on your Switch?
People use “patched” to describe either an updated system or hardware that no longer has a particular exploit. Those are different situations: Nintendo’s system updates change software, while the original RCM exploit depends on a bootROM/IROM vulnerability associated with particular hardware.
- Updated software: Your Switch is running a newer system version. That may affect which software-based exploit options exist, but it does not by itself identify the console’s hardware exploit status.
- Patched hardware: Some original-model (V1) units have an IROM patch that removes the original fusee-gelee RCM exploit. Later Tegra X1+ hardware uses a different bootROM; the NH Switch Guide does not identify the original exploit as available on that hardware.
RCM is a mode available across Switch consoles; the exploit associated with it does not work on every console. The specialist NH Switch Guide’s RCM documentation distinguishes these hardware cases. It is technical community documentation, not a Nintendo statement.
Can your particular Switch run homebrew?
There is no reliable yes-or-no answer from the word “patched,” a model shorthand, or a system-version number alone. Establish the exact model and hardware status, then check current guidance for that hardware and firmware. The NH Switch Guide describes some software-exploit support as firmware-dependent, but the available information does not support a blanket claim that every patched Switch can—or cannot—run any form of homebrew.

If you are considering homebrew, use maintained specialist documentation and confirm that it applies to your exact model and firmware. A compatible microSD card may be part of a homebrew setup; it does not bypass a hardware patch.
Does the latest system version tell you whether the hardware is patched?
No. Nintendo lists Switch system version 23.0.1 as released on September 30, 2026. That is the current software version listed on Nintendo’s system update information page; it does not show whether an individual console has an exploitable bootROM. Nintendo’s page also explains how to check the installed version and start an update. Update listings can change.

What risks does Nintendo warn about?
Nintendo of America’s Nintendo Switch User Agreement warns: “After the Console is updated or changed (including without limitation in connection with an Update), any existing or future unauthorized modification of the Console or Software, or the use of an unauthorized device in connection with the Console, may render the Console and/or Software permanently unusable.”
Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ describes circumvention devices as tools used to bypass security measures and enable unauthorized copying, modification, or playback of game files. It warns that unauthorized products can cause damage not covered by warranty, reduce functionality, and create a risk that a console will stop working after network updates. These are Nintendo’s stated terms and warnings, not a conclusion about how every jurisdiction treats every homebrew use.
