Short answer: no verified PlayStation 1 or PlayStation 2 release of Counter-Strike has been established, so there is no confirmed PlayStation Counter-Strike server network to return to. Valve’s official listing identifies the game’s 1 November 2000 release and gives requirements for Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux. The documented console release relevant to the common memory mix-up is an Xbox version with Xbox Live and system-link play, not a PlayStation edition.
The direct answer about PlayStation servers
Questions such as “Are the PlayStation Counter-Strike servers still up?” assume that a Sony version and an associated online service once existed. The available platform evidence does not establish that premise for the original PlayStation or PlayStation 2. Without a verified release, there is no specific PlayStation server shutdown date, server list or surviving disc-based online community that can be identified as the official Counter-Strike service.

That is more precise than claiming that every historical catalogue definitively proves a negative. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: a PlayStation 1 or PlayStation 2 Counter-Strike release was not verified. A secondary Counter-Strike overview explicitly says the game was not ported to PS2, which corroborates the conclusion but is not a substitute for a complete Sony release archive.

What Valve’s official listing actually confirms
Release date and supported computer systems
Valve’s Steam product listing dates Counter-Strike to 1 November 2000. Its listed system requirements cover Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux. No PlayStation 1 or PlayStation 2 requirement, edition or platform entry appears in that official product context.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
The same page uses the promotional wording “Play the world’s number 1 online action game.” That is Valve’s marketing copy, not an independently measured ranking and not evidence that a PlayStation service exists today. The listing is useful for identifying the original PC release and its operating-system context, but it does not document a Sony console port.
Why the platform distinction matters
A game can share a name across platforms while having different publishers, networking technology and server histories. A PC listing cannot be treated as proof of a console edition. Likewise, a memory of playing a console first-person shooter online does not identify the machine without a release record. Keeping those distinctions separate prevents a player from looking for a PlayStation server that was never part of the documented product.
Was Counter-Strike on the original PlayStation or PS2?
PlayStation 1
No reliable release evidence for a PlayStation 1 edition was established. The official Valve listing points to computer platforms, and no Sony product entry or physical PlayStation release was verified in the material available for this question.
PlayStation 2
The secondary overview specifically states that Counter-Strike was not ported to PS2. Treat that as corroborating evidence rather than as a complete catalogue of every game released for Sony’s system. Taken together with Valve’s platform information, it makes a supposed official PS2 disc or service highly doubtful.
This distinction also explains why buying a PS2 network adapter would not solve the problem. Network hardware can connect a supported game; it cannot create a missing game release or an official server service for an unverified port.

PlayStation 3 and later systems
Whether a PlayStation 3 Counter-Strike edition exists, and whether any such edition remains available, was not verified. It would be inaccurate to present PS3 as a confirmed alternative without authoritative PlayStation store or platform documentation. The evidence here supports PC and a historical Xbox example, not a PlayStation 3 recommendation.
What Sony’s PS2 shutdown information does—and does not—show
Sony’s official support page lists PlayStation 2 online games whose services were decommissioned. It also explains that most games on that list remain playable offline, subject to stated exceptions. This is a server-shutdown reference, not a complete catalogue of every PS2 game ever released.
Because it is not a release catalogue, the absence of Counter-Strike from that page cannot prove that a PS2 version never existed. Conversely, the page cannot be used to infer a hidden Counter-Strike server, a shutdown date or a regional edition. The correct use of the page is to check the service history of a known PS2 title, not to establish that an unverified game was once supported.
Could a community server make PS2 Counter-Strike playable?
Community projects have restored online activity for some PS2 games. The PS2 Online community maintains information about games and their activity, showing that fan-run infrastructure is possible for selected titles after official services end.
The available PS2 Online listing does not establish Counter-Strike compatibility. It does not provide a Counter-Strike room, DNS instruction, server address, network-adapter procedure or fan-made port that can be recommended for this specific game. A generic custom-DNS guide may work for another PS2 title and still be irrelevant to Counter-Strike.

Be cautious with videos or listings that promise “PS2 Counter-Strike online.” Ask for three separate proofs before treating one as genuine:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- a verifiable PlayStation game release or disc identification;
- documented compatibility with the proposed network method; and
- a current community server or service record that names the game.
None of those three pieces was established here for Counter-Strike. Do not assume that a homebrew demonstration, a similarly named shooter or an emulator screenshot represents an official PlayStation release.
The console release that likely causes the confusion
A GameSpot report dated 5 November 2003 describes an Xbox Counter-Strike release with Xbox Live and system-link modes. That is the historical console example documented in the available sources. Xbox Live provided internet play through Microsoft’s platform, while system link connected compatible consoles locally. Neither feature indicates a PlayStation version.
The report is historical coverage rather than current platform documentation. It confirms what the Xbox release offered at that time; it does not establish that Xbox services for that edition remain online now. It also does not turn Xbox media into a solution for a reader specifically asking about PlayStation.
When someone remembers “Counter-Strike on console,” the Xbox report offers a plausible explanation for the mix-up: the game did have a documented console appearance, but the platform was Xbox. The PC release and the Xbox release should therefore be treated as separate products with separate network histories.

What you can play, depending on your goal
| Goal | Evidence-supported route | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Play the original Counter-Strike release on a computer | Valve’s Steam listing | The listing dates the game to 1 November 2000 and specifies Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux requirements. |
| Find an official PS1 or PS2 online service | No verified route | No PlayStation 1 or PlayStation 2 release or service was established. |
| Investigate historical console play | Xbox edition described by GameSpot on 5 November 2003 | Xbox Live and system-link modes were reported for that release; present-day availability was not established. |
| Use a PS2 fan server | Check the PS2 Online community listing | Community activity exists for some PS2 games, but Counter-Strike compatibility is not shown. |
The table separates a documented platform from a hoped-for substitute. A PC installation is not a PlayStation solution, and Xbox media is not a PS2 solution. Those alternatives are useful only if your real objective is to play Counter-Strike rather than to play a verified Sony edition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check a claim that you found a PlayStation version
- Identify the exact platform. “PlayStation” may mean PS1, PS2, PS3 or a later system. Require the model, region and release format.
- Check the publisher’s platform record. Valve’s official listing is the authoritative starting point for the original release and lists computer operating systems, not PS1 or PS2.
- Separate a game from a server. A server notice can prove that an online service closed, but it cannot prove that the game was released for that console.
- Verify the physical product. A genuine disc should have a publisher, catalogue number and platform-specific packaging that can be matched to an authoritative catalogue. A fan-made disc, a mislabeled import or a video thumbnail is not sufficient.
- Confirm the online method. Official network service, local system link, private server and emulator tunneling are different arrangements. Evidence for one does not establish the others.
- Check the date of the claim. The Xbox report is from 2003, while Sony’s shutdown information concerns services that were later decommissioned. Historical availability and current availability must not be merged.
If a seller cannot provide this chain of evidence, do not purchase a PS2 disc, network adapter or subscription on the assumption that it will unlock Counter-Strike online.
Common answers that are misleading
“Sony’s shutdown list does not mention it, so its servers must still be up.”
The list is not comprehensive. Omission does not prove an active service, and it cannot establish that the game was ever a PS2 release.
“A PS2 community server means any online game can be revived.”
Community infrastructure is title-specific. The PS2 Online listing demonstrates activity for some games but does not show Counter-Strike support.
“The Xbox version proves there was a PlayStation version too.”
Ports are separate products. The documented Xbox features confirm Xbox software, not Sony software.
Best Value
“A PlayStation 3 listing must be the same game.”
A PS3 edition was not verified here. Treat an unconfirmed store entry or video as a lead to investigate, not as proof of release or current multiplayer access.
What to expect if you are looking for a physical copy
No verified PlayStation Counter-Strike disc was identified. A PS2 network adapter would therefore be an accessory without an established compatible game, and Xbox or PC media would be an off-platform substitute. The sensible purchase decision is to verify the exact title and platform before spending money, rather than buying hardware first and hoping a server appears.
For a reader whose priority is the original game, Valve’s PC listing is the documented path. For a reader whose priority is specifically Sony hardware, the honest answer is that a verified PS1 or PS2 Counter-Strike option has not been established, and a PS3 option remains unverified.

No confirmed PlayStation Counter-Strike server network can be identified because a PlayStation 1 or PlayStation 2 release was not verified. Sony’s shutdown page cannot fill that gap, and the PS2 Online community listing does not show Counter-Strike compatibility. The documented history is a PC release dated 1 November 2000 and an Xbox version reported in 2003 with Xbox Live and system link. Those facts answer the platform confusion without inventing a PlayStation service that the available evidence does not support.
