Start with Ethernet when a cable run is practical, or 5 GHz Wi‑Fi when it is not. Then compare your connection with the cloud service’s own requirements for the resolution and frame rate you want. A fast download plan by itself cannot guarantee responsive play.
What makes a cloud-gaming setup reliable?
Cloud gaming renders a game on a remote server and streams the video to your device while sending your controller inputs back. That makes the entire route between your home and the provider part of the gaming system. A connection can show a high peak download speed and still feel poor if latency is high, the signal is unstable, or other traffic causes interruptions.

- Service access: Your country or region, device, browser or app, subscription and chosen game must all be supported.
- Network quality: Sustained download capacity, latency to the provider and consistency matter together.
- Compatible hardware: The device must meet the service’s operating-system, browser and display requirements.
- Responsive input: A supported controller, keyboard, mouse or touch interface must work with that device and game.
The requirements below are provider guidance, not independent laboratory measurements. The official pages used for these figures did not display publication dates; the guidance was verified on October 13, 2026, and can change as services add devices, regions and quality tiers.

- Confirm regional access. Check that the service operates in your country and that cloud gaming is enabled there. Xbox explicitly makes play conditional on supported regions.
- Check the device list. Identify whether you will play on a Windows or macOS computer, phone, tablet, smart TV or streaming device, then verify that model or operating-system version is listed.
- Check the browser or app. A service may support a browser on one device but require a dedicated app on another. Use the current compatible version shown by the provider.
- Check the game and subscription. Xbox requires an eligible Game Pass plan for most cloud games, and game availability can vary. Do not assume that owning a title elsewhere automatically makes it streamable.
- Check the input method. Confirm that your existing Bluetooth or USB controller is supported on the target device. Some Xbox titles offer touch controls, but that is limited to selected games.
Make these checks before buying a router, controller or adapter. An accessory cannot solve a service that is unavailable in your region or does not support your device.
Provider requirements compared
Each provider publishes its own thresholds. Treat the numbers as starting points for the specified service and quality mode, not as a universal cloud-gaming rule.
| Provider | Network guidance | Other setup checks |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GeForce NOW | Targets include 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS, 35 Mbps for selected QHD/120 FPS modes, 45 Mbps for 4K/120 FPS and up to 65 Mbps for 5K/120 FPS on listed platforms. Latency to an NVIDIA data center must be below 80 ms. Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi‑Fi is recommended. | Requirements vary by device. Higher-resolution and high-frame-rate features can depend on membership tier. Supported gamepads vary by device. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Minimum download speed is 10 Mbps; some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi‑Fi or mobile data and describes best performance at 10 Mbps on mobile and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs and tablets. | Use a supported device and region, an eligible Game Pass plan for most games and a compatible controller for most titles. Selected games support touch controls. |
| Amazon Luna | At least 10 Mbps sustained speed is required for 1080p. Wired networking is recommended, with 5 GHz preferred in most households using a dual-band router. | Check the compatible-device and browser list. Amazon advises disabling VPNs and proxies during streaming and enabling Game Mode on Fire TV. |
NVIDIA’s figures are a device-specific quality table, so selecting a lower tier on one device does not establish the requirement for every other device. Xbox and Luna publish different minimums for their own platforms. Compare your connection with the provider you will actually use.
Choose Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi‑Fi
Ethernet: the most predictable starting point
Connect the gaming device directly to the router with an Ethernet cable when both ends have a suitable port, or when a compatible adapter can provide one. A wired path avoids the local wireless hop and is the first choice recommended by NVIDIA and Luna. It is especially practical for a desktop, console or TV positioned near the router.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Use a cable long enough to avoid sharp bends and loose connectors. If the router is in another room, do not create a trip hazard just to force a wired connection; a dependable 5 GHz signal can be the better practical choice.
5 GHz Wi‑Fi: the preferred wireless band
Connect to the router’s 5 GHz network rather than assuming every wireless network is equivalent. NVIDIA, Xbox and Luna all recommend or prefer 5 GHz Wi‑Fi. Verify that both the router and the gaming device support that band and that the play area receives a usable signal.
Wi‑Fi quality can change with distance, walls and competing traffic. Keep the device within reliable range of the router, and avoid placing the router inside a cabinet or directly beside sources of interference. If the 5 GHz network is unavailable where you play, first improve placement or use Ethernet before assuming that a faster internet plan will fix the problem.
Mobile data and shared connections
Xbox lists mobile data as an option and describes 10 Mbps as its best-performance figure for mobile use. Cellular conditions can vary by location and time, so check the service while stationary before relying on it for regular play. A shared home connection can also fluctuate when another device uploads, downloads or streams; test cloud gaming during the periods when you normally play.

Match bandwidth to your target quality
Choose a quality target before interpreting a speed test. Resolution and frame rate increase the amount of video the service must deliver, which is why NVIDIA publishes separate targets rather than one number.
| Target listed by NVIDIA | Bandwidth guidance |
|---|---|
| HD up to 60 FPS | 15 Mbps |
| FHD at 60 FPS | 25 Mbps |
| Selected QHD/120 FPS modes | 35 Mbps |
| 4K at 120 FPS | 45 Mbps |
| 5K at 120 FPS on listed platforms | Up to 65 Mbps |
These are examples from NVIDIA’s device-specific requirements and may depend on the membership tier and platform. They are not promises that a connection will feel responsive. For Xbox and Luna, use their separate published minimums in the provider table rather than substituting an NVIDIA figure.
Understand latency, stability and speed
Latency is the round-trip delay
Latency is the time needed for an input to reach the cloud server and for the resulting frame to return. NVIDIA specifies less than 80 milliseconds to an NVIDIA data center. That threshold is specific to NVIDIA’s service; it should not be presented as a universal pass mark for every provider or game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDistance to the data center, the route chosen by your internet provider, wireless retransmissions and congestion can all affect latency. A speed test that reports only download capacity does not establish the delay to a particular cloud-gaming data center.

Stability matters throughout a session
Cloud gaming needs a connection that can sustain the stream, not merely reach a high rate for a few seconds. Sudden drops can cause image quality to fall, pauses or disconnections. Xbox notes that performance depends on connection, location, device and other factors, so diagnose the whole path instead of blaming the internet provider from download speed alone.
How to test usefully
- Test from the same device and location where you will play.
- Run tests at the times you normally game, including busy evening periods.
- Repeat on Ethernet and 5 GHz Wi‑Fi if both are available.
- Compare results with the service’s own bandwidth and latency guidance, using the desired resolution and frame rate.
- Observe an actual cloud-gaming session. A passable test result does not override visible stutter, input delay or repeated disconnects.
Do not treat a single test as a guarantee. Conditions can change when other household devices use the connection or when the provider routes you to a different data center.
Device, browser and display checks
Verify the complete device path, not just the operating system. A service may support a computer browser but not the same browser on a smart TV, or may list only particular television and streaming-device models.
- Computer: Confirm the supported operating system, browser and controller connection method.
- Phone or tablet: Check the exact mobile operating-system version, screen support and whether the service expects an app or browser.
- Smart TV or streaming device: Check the model and region in the provider’s compatible-device list. For Luna on Fire TV, enable the television’s Game Mode.
- Display: Set the display to a mode your device and service can deliver. Selecting a television’s highest mode does not create a higher cloud-streaming tier.
NVIDIA publishes device-specific hardware and gamepad requirements, while Xbox and Luna maintain their own compatible-device and browser information. Recheck those lists immediately before purchase because compatibility is volatile.

Choose a controller and input method
Use an existing controller when it is supported
Before buying anything, identify how the controller connects: Bluetooth, USB or a platform-specific wireless link. Then verify compatibility for both the service and the device. Xbox requires a compatible controller for most cloud games, and NVIDIA documents supported gamepads by device.
A controller can pair successfully with a phone yet fail in a browser on a computer, or work in the operating system but not be recognized by the cloud-gaming app. Test it in the exact environment you will use.
When touch controls are enough
Xbox offers touch controls in selected games. They can remove the need for a physical controller for those titles, but they are not a general replacement for controller support across the catalog. For action games that require precise sticks or triggers, a compatible physical controller remains the safer assumption unless the game explicitly advertises touch input.

TV and dedicated controller considerations
If you stream on a television, confirm that the controller is supported by the TV or streaming device, not only by the service in the abstract. Pairing instructions and supported models belong to the device’s compatibility list. Do not buy a new controller until that list confirms it will work with your chosen setup.
Which accessories are actually necessary?
| Accessory | When it is useful | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet cable | Your device and router have Ethernet ports, or a compatible adapter can provide them, and a wired route is practical. | Port or adapter compatibility and a safe cable path. |
| 5 GHz-capable router | Your current router lacks 5 GHz or cannot provide a reliable signal where you play. | That the gaming device supports 5 GHz and the router can cover the play area. |
| Compatible controller | You do not already own an input device supported by the service and target device. | Service, device, connection method and game support. |
None of these purchases is automatically required. Ethernet and a 5 GHz router are ways to provide the connection paths providers prefer; they are not guarantees of a particular result in every home. An existing controller is sufficient when the platform supports it.
Set up a first session step by step
- Select the service and game. Confirm region, subscription, game availability, device, browser or app and controller support.
- Prepare the network. Connect by Ethernet if practical. Otherwise join the router’s 5 GHz network and confirm the device is actually using that band.
- Reduce avoidable traffic. Pause large downloads, cloud backups and other high-volume activity while testing. This isolates the gaming stream from competing household use.
- Update the device and app. Install the provider’s supported browser or current app version and apply available device updates.
- Connect and test the controller. Pair or plug it in before launching the game, then verify that buttons, sticks and triggers register correctly.
- Choose a realistic quality mode. Start with the provider’s requirement for your intended resolution and frame rate. If the connection is marginal, begin at a lower mode rather than treating the highest setting as mandatory.
- Run a sustained session. Play long enough to expose periodic drops, not just the first few minutes. Note whether problems correlate with location, time of day or other network use.
- Apply device-specific settings. Enable Game Mode on Fire TV when using Luna. Disable VPNs and proxies during Luna streaming, as Amazon advises.
Troubleshoot stutter, delay and disconnects
The picture is blurry or quality keeps changing
- Compare sustained speed with the provider’s target for the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Move from a weak wireless location to 5 GHz Wi‑Fi closer to the router, or test Ethernet.
- Stop competing downloads and uploads, then repeat the session.
- If using NVIDIA, try the quality tier appropriate to the device rather than assuming the highest listed mode is available to your membership.
Controls feel delayed
- Check latency to the relevant provider rather than relying only on a generic speed result.
- Test Ethernet against 5 GHz Wi‑Fi from the same location.
- Confirm the controller is supported and connected directly in the way the device expects.
- Check whether the issue changes by location or time; Xbox identifies connection, location, device and other factors as possible influences.
The session disconnects
- Verify that the service and game are available in your region and that your subscription remains eligible.
- Check for unstable Wi‑Fi or a fluctuating mobile signal.
- Repeat with other household traffic paused.
- For Luna, disable VPNs and proxies during streaming.
The controller is not detected
- Confirm compatibility for the exact device, browser or app, not just the controller brand or connection type.
- Reconnect the controller before launching the game and test another supported connection method if available.
- For Xbox, use touch controls only when the individual game lists them as supported.
If the same problem appears on multiple supported devices and connection paths, record the device, region, time, network type and game before contacting the provider. That information separates an account or service issue from a local wireless or controller issue.
A practical reliability checklist
- The service is available in your country and supports the game you want.
- Your device, browser or app appears on the current compatible list.
- Your subscription includes cloud access where required.
- Your connection meets the provider’s sustained-speed target for your chosen quality mode.
- Latency is within the provider’s stated guidance where one is published.
- Ethernet is used when practical; otherwise the device uses 5 GHz Wi‑Fi with a reliable signal.
- Your controller or touch-input option is supported by both the device and game.
- VPNs and proxies are disabled for Luna streaming, and Game Mode is enabled on Fire TV.
- You have tested during normal play conditions, including typical household network use.
Following this order prevents the most expensive mistake: buying hardware before confirming that the service, region, device and game are compatible. Once those basics are established, improve the local connection path and controller only where a measured problem remains.
