Previously redeemed Xbox One Games with Gold titles require an active Xbox Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate membership to access. Previously redeemed Xbox 360 titles remain in your library regardless of subscription status, according to Xbox’s 2023 announcement.
What happens to each type of Games with Gold game?
| Redeemed game | Without an active membership | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Xbox says access to a previously redeemed title continues only while you have an active Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate membership. | Confirm the account that redeemed it has an active qualifying membership and that the title is available for your device. |
| Xbox 360 | Xbox says previously redeemed titles stay in your library regardless of subscription status. | Confirm the title appears in the account library, and check current download availability and device compatibility separately. |
These rules concern Games with Gold redemptions. If you separately bought a game, that purchase is a distinct entitlement; the Games with Gold membership condition does not by itself determine access to a separately purchased copy.
Do you need Game Pass Core for Xbox 360 Games with Gold games?
No. Xbox’s announcement says previously redeemed Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles remain in the player’s library regardless of subscription status. That statement concerns the library entitlement; it does not guarantee that every game is currently downloadable, that its online services are still operating, or that it works on every Xbox console.
What if you cancel Game Pass Core or Ultimate?
For an Xbox One title redeemed through Games with Gold, Xbox’s stated access condition is an active Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate membership. If that membership ends, the announced condition for continued access is no longer met. This does not prevent you from accessing a separate paid copy if you own one.

How to check a specific game
- Sign in to the account that claimed it. Games with Gold access is tied to the account that redeemed the title.
- Identify the game’s version. The membership rule differs for Xbox One and Xbox 360 Games with Gold redemptions.
- For an Xbox One redemption, check membership status. Confirm the account currently has Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate.
- Check the account’s game library and the title’s current listing. Verify that the game appears for that account and that it can currently be downloaded on your console.
- Check compatibility separately. Library entitlement does not guarantee that a title runs on every Xbox device or that its online features remain available.
