No—frogs in Minecraft cannot be tamed to follow or obey you. You can breed them with slimeballs, raise tadpoles, and choose a frog variant by moving a tadpole to the biome where you want it to grow.
What slimeballs do—and do not do
Feeding slimeballs to frogs is for breeding, not taming. The official Minecraft references describe no way to make a frog a pet, command it, or have it follow you. Instead, two frogs bred with slimeballs produce frogspawn; that spawn hatches into tadpoles, which mature into frogs. Minecraft’s frog guide and the Wild Update notes describe breeding and frog behavior, not a taming mechanic.
How to raise a frog in the biome you choose
-
Find frogs. The Wild Update notes identify Swamp and Mangrove Swamp areas as frog habitats.
-
Breed two frogs. Use slimeballs to breed them. They produce frogspawn, which hatches into tadpoles.

Which frog variant will you get?
Minecraft has temperate, warm, and cold frogs. The tadpole’s growing biome determines which one develops. The official Minecraft interview maps each variant to the froglight produced when it eats a small magma cube:
| Frog variant | Froglight from a small magma cube |
|---|---|
| Temperate | Ochre |
| Cold | Verdant |
| Warm | Pearlescent |
The cited official sources establish that the growing biome determines the variant, but do not provide a complete biome-by-variant mapping here. They also do not describe a way to change a frog’s variant after it has matured.

What frogs can do for you
Frogs have useful interactions, but they do not behave like trained pets. They eat small slimes, which yield slimeballs, and small magma cubes, which yield a froglight associated with the frog variant. In Mojang’s interview, frog developer Alexander Östman called frogs “ideal for farming slime balls, of course.” That is a comment on their gameplay utility, not a taming feature.
