Minecraft’s public instructions show how to download a copy of a Realm world and use a copy elsewhere; they do not describe changing the owner account or moving the subscription. If you need to preserve the world, download it while the current owner still has access. If you need to change who controls billing, ask Minecraft Support whether that is possible for your account.
World transfer and Realm ownership are different
A downloaded world copy is not the same as transferring the hosted Realm. The Bedrock instructions say the downloaded copy appears in the Worlds tab; they do not say that the original Realm’s owner or subscription changes. Minecraft’s management guidance says subscription controls are available only to the Realm owner, and the public pages do not provide an owner-reassignment procedure.
That leaves three distinct goals:
- Keep the world: download a copy, then use it in the destination account’s supported workflow.
- Keep playing on a hosted Realm: the destination account needs appropriate access to a Realm; a world copy alone does not move the existing subscription.
- Change the billing or owner account: Minecraft’s published help pages do not explain how to reassign ownership, so ask Minecraft Support for a current account-specific answer.
Choose the right method for your edition

Bedrock and Java have separate instructions. The cited guidance does not establish that their world files are interchangeable, so use the procedure for the edition in which the Realm was created.
How to copy a Bedrock Realm world
Minecraft’s Bedrock guide describes a transfer between devices, not an ownership change. It requires current game versions on both devices and an active Realms trial or paid subscription for the documented transfer steps. Menu labels can vary as the game changes.

- On the host device: open Play, then Realms, choose the Realm, open its settings, select a world slot, and edit the world.
- Upload or replace the slot: choose Upload World for an empty slot or Replace World if that slot already contains a world.
- On the destination device: sign in with the Microsoft account intended to receive the copy, open Play and Realms, select the Realm and world slot, then choose Download World.
- Check the result: the downloaded world appears in the Worlds list as a copy, with “- Copy” added to its name.
The generic guide does not settle every cross-account permission case. Make sure the destination account has the necessary Realm access; the instructions do not show that an account without access can download from someone else’s Realm. Once downloaded, verify that the copy opens before changing subscriptions or access.
How to download a Java Realm world
- Open Minecraft Realms and select the Realm.
- Choose Configure, then open World Backups.
- Select Download Latest and confirm.
Minecraft says the downloaded world is added to single-player worlds. This creates a world copy; it is not an instruction to move the Realm subscription or owner account.

Save a copy before cancelling or waiting
Minecraft Help says Realms progress is saved regularly, including every 30 minutes, when you use Save & Quit, and when you disconnect. The service’s retention rules are separate from the availability of the world download:
- The four most recent saves are retained; older saves are kept less frequently, and saves from 122 or more days ago are not retained.
- A Realm world can be downloaded within 18 months after the subscription expires.
- Associated backups are deleted 30 days after expiry.
These are Minecraft’s stated service-policy figures; publication dates are not given on the help page. For an account change, download and verify the copy while the current owner still has access rather than relying on post-expiry availability.

A new login may not carry over player identity
Minecraft’s Java account-migration guidance says that a new Microsoft account joining an existing multiplayer world or server joins as a new player. That is a player-identity warning, not a Realms ownership rule: it does not say that another account cannot open a downloaded world. Do not assume that changing the login automatically carries the old player identity, inventory, or progress with it.

Do not treat inviting another player, downloading a world, or replacing a world slot as proof that ownership changed. The official help pages explain world downloads and owner-only subscription controls, but not reassignment. Contact Minecraft Support before making billing changes if the existing Realm must remain under a different account.
