Can an Epic Games purchase become a Steam license?
No. Epic states that games and DLC cannot be transferred from the Epic Games Store to another platform. Its store agreement also describes the license as personal and non-transferable. Epic’s support guidance and Epic’s current EULA do not provide a standard Epic-to-Steam key exchange.

A publisher may occasionally offer its own cross-buy or entitlement program, but that is an exceptional publisher policy—not a normal Epic feature. Check the game publisher’s official support page before assuming a key can be issued.

Can you add the Epic game to Steam?
Yes. Steam can add the Epic game as a non-Steam game. This creates a shortcut in your Steam library; it does not convert the purchase or create a Steam license.
- Open Steam.
- Click Add a Game in the lower-left corner.
- Select Add a Non-Steam Game.
- Choose the Epic-installed game executable, or select it from the detected list.
- Click Add Selected Programs.
Steam may start the Epic Games Launcher first, depending on the game’s DRM and executable. Steam achievements, trading cards, Workshop access, Steam Cloud, and overlay behavior are not guaranteed for a non-Steam shortcut. Steam’s labels can change between client versions.
Can Steam reuse the Epic installation?
Sometimes existing files can reduce downloading after you purchase the Steam edition, but there is no universal conversion method. Epic and Steam versions may use different manifests, depot structures, launch parameters, DRM, patches, or DLC systems.

The safest approach is to buy and install the Steam version normally. Do not delete the Epic installation until the Steam copy launches and your save has been verified. Steam’s official installation guidance covers moving Steam’s own games, not converting an Epic installation into a Steam-owned copy. Steam’s support documentation also notes that save handling and locations are determined by the game developer.
Can you transfer save files?
There is no universal answer. Saves may work when both versions use the same format and a common Windows location such as Documents, Saved Games, AppData, or the game folder. They may fail when saves are encrypted, signed, tied to a platform ID, stored in different directories, or associated with different profile identifiers.
Cloud synchronization can also cause problems: the Steam version might overwrite a copied save with a new or empty save. Epic’s EULA warns that game progress and related data may not always remain available, so cloud storage should not be treated as a guaranteed cross-store backup.

Safe save-transfer checklist
- Close the game, Epic Games Launcher, and Steam.
- Back up the entire Epic save folder somewhere separate. Copy it; do not move it.
- Read the game publisher’s official save-location and cross-progression instructions.
- Install and launch the Steam version once, create a new save, and close the game.
- Compare the Epic and Steam save locations and formats.
- If the publisher confirms compatibility, copy the backed-up Epic save into the Steam save location.
- Temporarily disable cloud synchronization if the game’s instructions require it.
- Launch the Steam version and test the old progress.
- Keep the backup until the save works across several launches.
Do not rely on generic save converters. A tool that works for one game may corrupt another save or create anti-cheat and account problems.
What happens to DLC?
Epic explicitly includes DLC in its no-transfer guidance. Epic DLC generally will not unlock the Steam edition, while Steam DLC normally requires the Steam base game. In-game currency and platform-specific purchases may also remain tied to the original platform.
A publisher account may preserve certain cosmetics or progression, but this is title-specific. Before buying Steam DLC, confirm that the Steam base game recognizes the same publisher account and that the relevant content is supported.

What happens to achievements?
Achievements are normally platform-specific. Epic achievements do not automatically appear in Steam, and importing a save may not unlock the corresponding Steam achievements. Some games award achievements only when the event happens again.
Avoid third-party achievement unlockers, especially in games with anti-cheat or online services.

Separate three things:
- Store ownership: controlled by Epic or Steam.
- Publisher account: may carry profile data between PC storefronts.
- Server-side progress: may remain available if the same account is correctly linked.
Check the game’s official account-linking instructions before unlinking or relinking accounts. In some games, changing links can create a new profile or make existing progress inaccessible. DLC entitlements may still remain platform-specific even when multiplayer progress carries over.

- Only want one launch library? Add the Epic game to Steam as a non-Steam shortcut.
- Want a true Steam license, Steam Cloud, Workshop, or Steam achievements? Buy the Steam version.
- Want to keep your progress? Check the specific game’s official cross-save or save-migration policy first.
- Want to use Steam Deck? Treat Epic launcher setup and Steam-native ownership as separate questions; check compatibility for the individual title.
- Want to avoid paying twice? Continue playing through Epic unless the Steam-specific features justify repurchasing.
Before buying the Steam version
- Compare the exact edition and included DLC.
- Confirm publisher-account and launcher requirements.
- Check cross-save or cross-progression support.
- Verify save-file compatibility.
- Check anti-cheat, mod, controller, and Steam Deck requirements.
- Compare the current Steam price and the applicable refund terms.
A refund, if the Epic purchase qualifies under Epic’s current rules, would return the Epic purchase under those rules; it would not transfer the purchase to Steam. You would still need to buy the Steam edition separately.
