Installing an all-in-one (AIO) liquid CPU cooler means fitting the correct socket bracket, mounting the radiator and fans, securing the pump block evenly, connecting power and control cables, and verifying operation in BIOS/UEFI. The exact brackets and cable layout vary by model, so use your cooler’s manual as the final authority.

What an AIO cooler includes

An AIO is a sealed cooling loop made up of a CPU cold plate and integrated pump, flexible tubes, a radiator, and one or more radiator fans. Depending on the model, it may also use SATA or PCIe power, internal USB 2.0, a controller, PWM fan leads, and either proprietary lighting or a 5V 3-pin ARGB connection.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A sealed AIO is not normally filled, drained, or serviced by the user. It is different from a custom water-cooling loop, which uses separate reservoirs, pumps, fittings, tubing, and coolant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AIO cooling is useful for high-performance CPUs under sustained load, compact builds where a large tower cooler conflicts with RAM or motherboard heatsinks, and systems where the builder prefers an unobstructed CPU-socket area or wants an LCD/RGB feature. A tower air cooler is often the better choice when low cost, simple installation, long-term serviceability, and eliminating pump failure are priorities. Liquid cooling is not automatically quieter, faster, or more reliable; results depend on the radiator, fans, pump, case airflow, CPU power limits, ambient temperature, and mounting quality.

#1 Best Overall
ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 A-RGB - AIO CPU Cooler, Water Cooling
  • CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
  • ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
  • NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
  • INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
  • INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard

Before you start: compatibility checklist

1. Confirm the CPU socket

Check the exact cooler specification and included mounting kit. Current mainstream examples include AMD AM4 and AM5, plus Intel LGA1700 and LGA1851, but support is product-specific. For example, NZXT’s Kraken Core documentation lists Intel LGA1851, LGA1700, LGA1200, and LGA115x, and AMD AM4/AM5 support on applicable models. ARCTIC’s Liquid Freezer III 240 Rev 2 lists AM4, AM5, LGA1700, and LGA1851 support. Older Intel sockets, LGA2066, Threadripper, and other HEDT platforms require explicit manufacturer support.

See the NZXT Intel installation guide, NZXT AMD installation guide, and ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 240 Rev 2 documentation for examples. Never substitute a bracket because its screws look similar.

2. Confirm case clearance

Check the supported radiator size—120, 240, 280, 360, or 420 mm—along with radiator thickness, fan thickness, total installed depth, tube length, and the case’s backplate cutout. A nominal 27 mm radiator with 25 mm fans generally needs about 52 mm of space before brackets, motherboard heatsinks, RAM, or cable routing are considered. Treat this as a practical estimate, not a universal specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Top mounting can conflict with tall RAM or VRM heatsinks.
  • Front mounting can reduce graphics-card clearance.
  • Side and bottom positions depend heavily on the case and tube routing.
  • Check that tubes will not press against RAM, GPU components, fan blades, or sharp case edges.

3. Identify every required header

Before installation, locate the motherboard’s AIO_PUMP or PUMP_FAN header, CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT headers, 4-pin PWM fan headers, internal USB 2.0 header, SATA or PCIe power connectors, and any 5V ARGB or proprietary controller connections.

A 5V 3-pin ARGB connector is not interchangeable with a 12V 4-pin RGB connector. Connecting a 5V ARGB lead to 12V RGB can permanently damage the cooler or PC, as NZXT warns in its installation documentation. Do not assume all 3-pin connectors serve the same purpose: a pump/tach connector and 5V ARGB connector are electrically different.

Tools and safe preparation

  • Phillips PH2 screwdriver
  • The cooler’s supplied backplate, standoffs, brackets, screws, washers, and cables
  • 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol
  • Lint-free cloth or coffee filter
  • Thermal paste, if the cooler does not have usable pre-applied paste
  • Flashlight and basic antistatic precautions
  • The motherboard manual and exact AIO manual

ARCTIC specifies a PH2 screwdriver for its Liquid Freezer III 240 Rev 2, though some configurations may require additional tools.

  1. Shut down the computer normally.
  2. Turn off the power supply and unplug the power cable.
  3. Press the case power button briefly to discharge residual power.
  4. Move the case to a stable, well-lit work surface.
  5. Remove both side panels if backplate or cable access requires it.
  6. Keep all original CPU-socket hardware for future service or warranty work.

Choose the radiator position

Keep the radiator’s highest point above the pump whenever possible. This gives air in the sealed loop somewhere to collect away from the pump. A top-mounted radiator is usually the simplest arrangement. With a front-mounted radiator, tubes at the bottom are generally preferable when the case and tubing allow it. Corsair recommends keeping the radiator’s highest point above the pump and favors tubes-down front mounting; ARCTIC warns that placing the radiator below the pump can cause bubbling noise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Top exhaust

Usually the easiest layout for case airflow and pump positioning. The fans exhaust warm air through the radiator, but top-panel RAM and motherboard clearance must be checked.

Front intake

Can supply cooler outside air to the radiator, potentially helping CPU temperature, but may warm the air reaching the GPU. Prefer tubes-down mounting when feasible and verify graphics-card clearance.

Bottom or side mounting

These layouts are case-dependent. Avoid a configuration in which the pump becomes the highest point in the loop, and follow the cooler manufacturer’s guidance rather than relying on a generic diagram.

Fan direction and push-pull

Use the arrows on the fan frame to identify airflow direction. Corsair documents these arrows. In push mounting, fans push air through the radiator; in pull mounting, they draw air through it. Push-pull uses fans on both sides and can improve airflow in some cases, but adds thickness, noise, cost, and cable complexity. It is not required for a normal installation.

Remove the old CPU cooler

  1. Disconnect the CPU fan or pump lead.
  2. Disconnect RGB, USB, SATA, PCIe, controller, or hub cables.
  3. Loosen mounting screws gradually in a cross pattern.
  4. If the cooler is stuck, gently twist it before lifting. Do not pull forcefully straight up; dried thermal paste can act like adhesive.
  5. Clean old paste from the CPU heat spreader with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
  6. Inspect the CPU socket and motherboard for paste contamination or damage.

Install the correct mounting hardware

AMD AM4 and AM5

  1. Leave the motherboard’s rear backplate in place unless the cooler manual specifically says otherwise.
  2. Remove the stock plastic retention clips.
  3. Install the cooler’s AM4/AM5 standoffs on the exposed posts.
  4. Install or swap the cooler’s AMD retention bracket.
  5. Confirm that all four standoffs are the correct AMD parts.

NZXT’s current AMD procedure follows this general pattern: remove the stock clips, install the AM4/AM5 standoffs, replace the pre-installed Intel retention bracket, and secure the pump cap with four screws.

Intel LGA1700 and LGA1851

  1. Install the supplied socket-specific Intel backplate if one is required.
  2. Select the correct LGA1700 or LGA1851 standoffs.
  3. Install the matching mounting frame or bracket.
  4. Keep the backplate aligned while tightening the standoffs.
  5. Do not use LGA1200 or LGA115x hardware unless the manual explicitly confirms compatibility.

LGA1700 and LGA1851 fitment can use different selections or hardware. ARCTIC’s documentation treats them as separate configurations. Retain original socket parts for warranty and future service.

Other sockets

Use only a manufacturer-approved mounting kit. If no supported kit exists, do not improvise with washers, unrelated standoffs, or hardware from another cooler.

Install the radiator and fans

  1. Dry-fit the radiator, fans, pump tubes, RAM, and GPU before applying paste.
  2. Decide whether the fans are intake or exhaust and orient them consistently.
  3. Attach the fans using only the supplied screws.
  4. Check screw length carefully. A screw that is too long can puncture radiator fins or coolant channels.
  5. Support the radiator while tightening it to the case.
  6. Route tubes naturally. Avoid sharp bends, twisting, crushing, or contact with fan blades and case edges.

If the case lacks a motherboard-backplate cutout, you may need to remove the motherboard or install the backplate before placing the motherboard in the case. Corsair notes this limitation in its installation guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply thermal paste

If paste is pre-applied

Do not touch it or add more. If you lift the pump block after it contacts the CPU, clean both surfaces and apply fresh paste. Do not reuse disturbed pre-applied paste; Corsair specifically recommends removing old paste and applying a new layer when reinstalling a cooler.

  • High-Efficiency Cooling Pump – Equipped with a massive copper base plate for superior cooling at all loads.
  • Skeleton-Frame Pump Head Design – Unique pump head with vivid ARGB lighting, fully customizable via motherboard sync.
  • Extreme Cooling Performance – High-density fins paired with powerful PWM ARGB radiator fans ensure optimized airflow and efficient heat transfer.
  • Universal Compatibility – Supports Intel LGA 115X/1200/1700/20XX and AMD AM4/AM5 sockets.
  • Durable Build – Elastic high-density tubing and hydraulic bearing fans deliver long-lasting, quiet, and stable operation.

If paste is not pre-applied

  1. Clean and dry the CPU heat spreader.
  2. Apply a small central amount of paste.
  3. Let mounting pressure spread it across the surface.
  4. Do not manually smear a thick layer unless the cooler manufacturer instructs you to do so.

There is no universally precise “pea-sized” amount. Paste viscosity and CPU heat-spreader size differ, so follow the cooler’s instructions where they provide a specific method.

Mount the pump block

  1. Remove the protective film from the cold plate.
  2. Align the pump bracket with the correct standoffs.
  3. Lower the block vertically onto the CPU.
  4. Start every screw or thumb nut before fully tightening any one of them.
  5. Tighten gradually in an X-pattern or by alternating opposite corners.
  6. Stop at the supplied stop points or when the screws are firmly seated.
  7. Do not overtighten against the motherboard.

NZXT instructs users to loosely engage all four screws before tightening in an X-pattern, while ARCTIC likewise specifies engaging all screws and tightening them alternately.

Connect the pump, fans, USB, and lighting

Pump power or tach lead

Connect the pump to AIO_PUMP when the cooler and motherboard recommend it. If that header is unavailable, CPU_FAN may be correct. NZXT explicitly permits AIO_PUMP or CPU_FAN for applicable Kraken Core models and recommends CPU_FAN when an equivalent pump header is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some pumps use a 3-pin DC connector rather than a 4-pin PWM connector. Match the connector and configure the header accordingly.

Radiator fans

Depending on the cooler, connect fans to a supplied splitter or hub, CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT, separate motherboard fan headers, or a proprietary controller. Some AIOs use one combined PWM lead; others provide separate pump, radiator-fan, and auxiliary-fan connections. ARCTIC documents both combined and individual-control arrangements.

USB and external power

LCD or software-controlled models may require internal USB 2.0 plus SATA, PCIe, or controller power. RGB lighting does not prove that the pump is powered. Connect every required power cable listed in the manual.

RGB

Identify whether the cooler uses 5V 3-pin ARGB, 12V 4-pin RGB, USB-controlled lighting, or a proprietary ecosystem. Never force a connector into a different header, and never connect a 5V ARGB plug to 12V RGB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure BIOS or UEFI

  1. Start the PC and enter firmware setup using the motherboard’s displayed key, commonly Delete or F2.
  2. Confirm that CPU temperature is plausible.
  3. Check whether the pump or CPU_FAN header reports an RPM signal.
  4. Set a 4-pin PWM-connected header to PWM mode. ARCTIC specifically instructs users to use PWM rather than DC for its documented configuration.
  5. Set the pump profile according to the cooler manual—often a fixed high-speed setting or an appropriate curve.
  6. Set radiator fans to respond to CPU temperature.
  7. Save and reboot.

Menu names differ between ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock, and other firmware interfaces, so there is no single universal BIOS path. Do not disable a CPU_FAN warning until you have verified that the pump is powered and working.

  • INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard

Verify the first boot

  • The pump is detected or has a visible RPM/power signal.
  • Radiator fans spin and are not obstructed.
  • There is no leak or moisture around the block, tubes, radiator, or fittings.
  • There is no persistent grinding, rattling, or loud bubbling.
  • CPU temperature does not rapidly climb toward its thermal limit at idle.
  • USB, RGB, LCD, and controller devices appear when required.

A short period of gurgling after moving an AIO can occur as air shifts through the loop. Persistent bubbling, grinding, or rapidly increasing temperature is a reason to shut down and inspect the installation.

Test cooling in stages

  1. Leave the system idle for several minutes while watching CPU package temperature.
  2. Run a short CPU workload.
  3. Run a longer workload appropriate for the system.
  4. Monitor CPU temperature, effective clock, CPU power, pump RPM, fan RPM, and thermal throttling.
  5. Stop immediately if temperatures rise abnormally or the pump or fans stop.

Do not use one fixed temperature as a universal safety limit. Limits vary by processor, firmware, power settings, ambient temperature, and workload. Compare the results with your CPU manufacturer’s specifications and expected behavior for that processor.

Troubleshooting

The PC does not power on

Check the PSU switch, mains cable, motherboard power connectors, pump power cable, SATA/PCIe or controller power, and fan hub or breakout cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CPU overheats immediately

Shut down and check for an unremoved cold-plate film, incorrect standoffs, poor CPU contact, missing or disturbed thermal paste, an unpowered pump, disconnected or obstructed fans, restricted radiator airflow, or an unfavorable pump/radiator position. Also consider unusually high CPU power settings or firmware behavior.

CPU_FAN error or zero RPM

Connect the pump tach lead to CPU_FAN if the cooler provides one, or use the motherboard’s recommended AIO_PUMP arrangement. Confirm the header mode and that the cable is fully seated. Only change monitoring warnings after confirming actual pump operation.

Fans spin but the pump is not detected

Check the pump-specific power lead, SATA/PCIe power, controller connection, USB requirement, and header settings. Fan or RGB operation alone does not confirm pump operation.

RGB or LCD does not work

Check USB 2.0, controller, SATA/PCIe, and lighting connections. Verify ARGB voltage and pin type. Proprietary ecosystems may require their own hub or software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Persistent bubbling or grinding

Inspect radiator height and pump position. If the radiator is below the pump or the pump is the loop’s highest point, reposition the radiator if possible. Continued mechanical noise may indicate trapped air, an obstruction, pump wear, or a defective unit.

A radiator screw is too long

Stop immediately. Remove it and use the supplied screw or confirm exact replacement dimensions with the manufacturer. A long screw can damage the radiator.

There is a visible leak

Shut down immediately, switch off and unplug the PSU, and do not continue testing. Photograph the condition and follow the manufacturer’s warranty and damage-claim process. Do not open or refill the sealed loop unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that procedure.

Which AIO should you buy?

Choose by socket support, case fit, radiator-plus-fan thickness, tube length, mounting hardware, connector requirements, warranty documentation, pump and fan control, and software or controller needs—not radiator size alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should an AIO radiator go at the top or front?

Top exhaust is usually the simplest layout because it keeps the radiator above the pump. Front mounting is also valid; when practical, install the tubes at the bottom and check GPU clearance and airflow effects.

Can I connect the AIO pump to CPU_FAN?

Often yes, especially when the motherboard lacks AIO_PUMP. Follow the cooler manual, confirm the header receives the expected signal, and configure PWM or DC mode to match the connector.

Can I reuse pre-applied thermal paste?

Not after lifting the pump block from the CPU. Clean both surfaces and apply fresh paste before reinstalling the cooler.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a 360 mm AIO always better than a 240 mm model?

No. Case airflow, fan quality, mounting, CPU power, noise targets, and clearance can matter more than radiator size.

The Bottom Line

The safest AIO installation is model-specific: verify the socket and case first, keep the radiator above the pump when possible, use the correct screws and mounting hardware, connect every required power and control cable, and confirm pump operation before stressing the CPU.
