Yes. You can give another player a copy of a Valheim world save. If the world is stored in Steam Cloud, move it to local storage in Valheim first; Steam Cloud saves are tied to your account, and dedicated servers can use local saves only. Back up the world before copying or replacing anything. The save format changed with Valheim 1.0, so older instructions that say to transfer only a .db and .fwl file may not apply to current saves.
Check where the world is saved
- Open Valheim’s Manage Saves screen and find the world you want to share. Check whether its location is marked Cloud or Local. Iron Gate’s Steam Cloud FAQ explains the location indicator and save-management controls.
- If it is marked Cloud, select the in-game control to Move to Local before copying the save or using it with a dedicated server. Steam Cloud saves are account-bound; dedicated servers access local saves, not your account’s cloud save.
- Make a separate backup before you transfer or replace files. Valheim’s move controls create backups, and the official FAQ recommends copying save files to another location. Move-generated backups are not automatically deleted, so keep track of them rather than assuming they are temporary.
Transfer a copy, not your only save
Once the save is local and backed up, give the recipient a copy of the world save. The recipient should import or manage it using Valheim’s current save-management flow and a save structure compatible with their game version. Do not overwrite their existing world without first backing that up too.
A Steam community discussion from August 2025 describes a PC file-copy approach, but that guidance predates the 1.0 save-format change. Treat its specific file list as older advice, not as a guaranteed current recipe: follow the files and structure used by the game version you and the recipient are running.
Crossplay does not automatically transfer save progress
Crossplay lets players on different platforms play together; it does not generally synchronize a world save between their platforms. Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ documents an exception for Xbox saves accessed on PC when the game is launched through the Microsoft Store. That is a specific save-sync case, not a general promise that a Steam save will appear on another platform.
What to know about consoles and dedicated servers
Console saves
The official guidance cited here does not describe direct console save export or import steps. Do not assume that PC file-copy instructions apply to console storage.
Dedicated servers
A dedicated server needs a local world save. If your world is still in Steam Cloud, move it to local storage in the game before trying to use it on the server.

Why older transfer instructions may be incomplete
Valheim’s 1.0 update changed save handling. The official patch notes also document a save-conversion issue with a backup-based recovery path. Those changes are why old directions to copy just a .db and .fwl pair should not be treated as a current universal procedure. Keep an untouched backup so you can recover if a conversion or import goes wrong.
