Nintendo’s documented legacy method uses a Nintendo DS or DS Lite with a Game Boy Advance cartridge slot to migrate eligible Pokémon from an original Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen Game Pak into Pokémon Platinum through Pal Park.
That is not the same as a direct cartridge-to-Pokémon HOME import. If you have no compatible system with a GBA cartridge slot, Nintendo’s official instructions reviewed here do not document a way to read an original GBA save directly into HOME. The Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen follow a separate HOME workflow and do not import saves from the original cartridges.

What “without the original hardware” actually means
The phrase can describe two very different situations:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- No Game Boy Advance console: This can work. A Nintendo DS or DS Lite can play GBA games in single-player mode, so either system can provide the cartridge slot needed for the Pal Park procedure.
- No GBA-compatible cartridge-slot system at all: The official route does not show a direct transfer from an original GBA Game Pak to Pokémon HOME. HOME cannot be treated as a cartridge reader.
The original cartridge is still required. Replacing the GBA console with a DS-family system changes the hardware used to access the Game Pak; it does not eliminate the Game Pak, the destination game, or the later services needed to move Pokémon beyond Platinum.

The two routes readers commonly confuse
| Starting point | Documented first step | Hardware or software required | Can the move be reversed? | Important date or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original GBA Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen cartridge | Migrate into Pokémon Platinum at Pal Park | Supported GBA Game Pak, a DS or DS Lite with a GBA slot, and Platinum with the National Pokédex | No. Migrated Pokémon disappear from the source Game Pak. | Onward movement requires additional compatible games and services; the cartridge is not a direct HOME source. |
| Switch release of FireRed or LeafGreen | Use Nintendo’s HOME transfer workflow for the Switch games | Switch version, Nintendo Switch and HOME-compatible services | No. Nintendo says Pokémon moved from those releases cannot return to them. | This workflow concerns the Switch releases, not saves on original GBA cartridges. |
Keeping these routes separate prevents the most common mistake: assuming that because HOME can work with a modern Switch release, it can also open an old physical cartridge. Nintendo’s current HOME instructions do not establish that capability.
What the official GBA-to-Platinum route requires
Eligible source games
Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum manual names five compatible GBA sources: Pokémon Ruby, Pokémon Sapphire, Pokémon Emerald, Pokémon FireRed, and Pokémon LeafGreen. A different Game Boy title is not automatically eligible just because it contains Pokémon.
A destination copy of Pokémon Platinum
The DS copy of Pokémon Platinum must have the National Pokédex. Pal Park migration is not available at the start of the adventure; you must reach that requirement in the destination save first.
A system with both required cartridge slots
The procedure places the Platinum DS Game Card in the DS Game Card slot and the GBA Pokémon cartridge in the GBA cartridge slot. Nintendo confirms that DS and DS Lite systems can play GBA games in single-player mode. That makes a DS Lite a practical substitute for a GBA console for this specific cartridge step, provided the system has the appropriate slot and works correctly.
Pokémon that meet Pal Park’s restrictions
The manual excludes Pokémon holding Mail and Pokémon that know a hidden move. Resolve those conditions before attempting migration. The process also removes the Pokémon from the original Game Pak, so do not select anything you intend to keep in the GBA save.

How to migrate from the cartridge with a DS or DS Lite
1. Prepare the source Game Pak
Use one of the five named GBA games and check the party or storage boxes for restrictions. Remove Mail and replace any hidden move before starting. Make a deliberate list of the Pokémon you want to move because the operation is one-way.
2. Confirm the Platinum prerequisite
Open the intended Pokémon Platinum save and verify that the National Pokédex has been obtained. Without it, the Pal Park option described in Nintendo’s manual is unavailable.

- Turn off the DS or DS Lite.
- Insert the Pokémon Platinum Game Card into the DS Game Card slot.
- Insert the compatible GBA Pokémon Game Pak into the GBA cartridge slot.
- Start the system and follow Platinum’s Pal Park instructions.
The DS is acting as the bridge between the two cartridges. It is not converting the GBA save into a HOME file, and it does not remove the need for a legitimate compatible destination game.
4. Complete the Pal Park capture step
After migration is initiated, the Pokémon appear in Pal Park in Platinum, where you catch them. This is a destination-game activity rather than a simple menu copy. Follow the in-game Pal Park procedure until the selected Pokémon are recorded in the Platinum save.
5. Treat the result as permanent
Nintendo states that migrated Pokémon disappear from the original GBA Game Pak and cannot be sent back. The one-way behavior applies even when the source and destination are both authentic cartridges. Keep a backup of the original save only if you have a lawful, reliable way to make one; do not assume Pal Park preserves a second copy.

Can those Pokémon eventually reach Pokémon HOME?
They can only continue through a later-generation migration chain that supports the game in which they now reside. The documented Pal Park operation ends with the Pokémon in Pokémon Platinum; it is not a direct GBA-to-HOME transfer. You should therefore plan for several separate compatibility steps, additional games or systems, and the availability of Nintendo’s legacy services.

Why the original GBA cartridge is not a direct Poké Transporter source
Nintendo’s compatibility information for Poké Transporter and Pokémon Bank lists supported games and does not list original GBA cartridges as direct Poké Transporter sources. The practical implication is that the Pokémon must first leave the GBA Game Pak through a supported in-game migration such as Pal Park. HOME cannot bypass that generation-to-generation handoff.
The Pokémon Bank deadline matters
Nintendo announced that Pokémon Bank service and Bank-to-HOME transfers will end on February 25, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Nintendo also says Pokémon Bank is no longer available to download. That cutoff is a service deadline, not a guarantee that every older game can be connected on the same day. If your planned chain depends on Bank or Bank-to-HOME, verify that every required application and compatible game is already available and functioning before you begin a one-way migration.
Because Bank access is time-sensitive, buying only a DS Lite and a GBA cartridge is not enough to promise a HOME result. You also need the intervening compatible games, working hardware, and any required services for the rest of the chain.
Do not confuse original cartridges with the Switch releases
Nintendo’s current HOME instructions include a workflow for the Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen. In that workflow, you select the GBA games on the Switch version of HOME, and Nintendo warns that Pokémon moved from those releases cannot be moved back to them.

Those instructions refer to the Switch software and its save data. They do not say that HOME imports a save from an original GBA FireRed or LeafGreen cartridge. Owning the same game title on two different platforms does not make their saves interchangeable.
Hardware caveats when using a DS or DS Lite
Check the exact model
The useful feature is the GBA cartridge slot. Nintendo confirms DS and DS Lite GBA play in single-player mode, so those systems can replace a GBA console for Pal Park. Inspect the exact model before buying or borrowing a used handheld; a listing that merely says “DS” does not prove that the cartridge slot, contacts, screen, battery, or buttons are functional.
Know what the DS cannot replace
Nintendo says DS and DS Lite systems cannot play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color games. They also lack the cable port used for GBA multiplayer. Those limitations matter if “GBA game” is being used loosely to mean an older Game Boy title, or if you expect the DS to substitute for link-cable features. They do not prevent the single-player cartridge access required by Pal Park.
Check all cartridges, not just the handheld
- The source Game Pak must be one of the five games named by the Platinum manual.
- The destination must be Pokémon Platinum with the National Pokédex on its save.
- Both cartridges should be readable before you commit to a one-way migration.
- Plan the later-generation and service requirements before moving anything out of the GBA save.
Common failure points and the correct response
Pal Park is unavailable
Check the destination save first. The National Pokédex is a stated prerequisite, so changing the handheld will not unlock Pal Park in an unqualified Platinum save.
A selected Pokémon is rejected
Look for Mail or a hidden move. Nintendo’s manual excludes both conditions. Remove the Mail or replace the move in the source game, then retry.

You expected the Pokémon to remain in the GBA game
Stop before confirming the migration if you are not prepared for a one-way move. Nintendo says the Pokémon disappear from the original Game Pak and cannot return.
You have a GBA cartridge but no DS, DS Lite, or GBA
The official method requires a system with the GBA cartridge slot. The reviewed Nintendo documentation does not provide a direct cartridge-to-HOME alternative. Borrowing or obtaining a compatible slot-equipped system is the supported hardware solution; a HOME subscription alone cannot replace it.
You bought the Switch version expecting it to read the cartridge
The Switch HOME workflow applies to the Switch release and its save, not to the original physical Game Pak. Treat the two platforms as separate sources.

A practical decision checklist
- Identify the source. Is it an original Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen Game Pak, or a Switch release?
- Confirm the hardware gap. If you lack only a GBA console, a DS or DS Lite may fill that role for Pal Park.
- Confirm the destination. You need Pokémon Platinum and a save with the National Pokédex.
- Prepare the Pokémon. Remove Mail, replace hidden moves, and decide which Pokémon can be permanently removed from the source Game Pak.
- Map the onward route. Pal Park places the Pokémon in Platinum; it does not place them directly in HOME.
- Check the deadline. If your later steps depend on Pokémon Bank or Bank-to-HOME, Nintendo’s announced end time is February 25, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
The shortest accurate answer is therefore conditional: you can transfer Pokémon from an original GBA game without owning a GBA console, using a compatible DS or DS Lite and Pal Park, but you cannot skip the cartridge-slot hardware or assume a direct import into HOME.
