In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Collateral is a map with two versions—Collateral for 12v12 Combined Arms and Collateral Strike for 6v6—not a permanently available standalone mode. The first check is therefore the current playlist rotation. If the map is not listed, router changes cannot make it appear. If it is listed, work through service status, local-network tests and party isolation one change at a time.
What “Collateral mode” means
Treyarch introduced Collateral as a 12v12 Combined Arms map and Collateral Strike as its 6v6 counterpart in 2021. Official announcements used playlist names such as Combined Arms 24/7 rather than identifying a separate, permanent “Collateral mode.” That distinction matters: a matchmaking search can fail simply because the desired map playlist has rotated out, not because your connection is broken.

The community question “Is there a playlist or game mode people have been having luck with!?” was posted in 2021 while players were looking for Collateral matches. It describes a historical situation, not evidence that the same playlist or player population exists now.
Start with playlist availability
Check the in-game Featured or Quick Play list
- Launch Black Ops Cold War and open the multiplayer playlist screen.
- Look for a listing that explicitly includes Collateral, Collateral Strike, Combined Arms 24/7 or another current map-focused playlist.
- Read the playlist description and rotation timer rather than relying on an old screenshot, social-media post or forum answer.
- Queue for the listed playlist and note whether the search finds players, fails while joining, or disconnects after the match begins.
Treyarch announced a week of Collateral Combined Arms 24/7 in its July 29, 2021 update. That was a time-limited event. The June and July 2021 announcements establish what the map variants were, but they do not establish availability in 2026. No current official notice confirms a live Collateral playlist, a current player count or a Collateral-specific matchmaking defect.

Use another playlist as a control test
Queue for a currently listed standard multiplayer playlist, then try Collateral again. If every playlist searches normally but the Collateral entry is missing or fails, availability or rotation is more likely than a home-network fault. If every playlist fails in the same way, continue with the service and connection checks below.
Identify the exact failure before changing settings
“Matchmaking problem” can describe several different events. Record the first point at which the process stops:
| Observed symptom | Most useful first question | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral is not shown | Is the playlist currently in the game’s rotation? | A rotated or retired listing cannot be restored with network hardware. |
| Search remains empty or times out | Do other playlists find players? | If only the map-focused queue is empty, availability or population may be involved; if all queues are empty, check service and network status. |
| A lobby is found but joining fails | Does the same player fail to join other matches? | This points toward a service, party or local-connectivity path rather than proof of a Collateral bug. |
| The match starts and then disconnects | Does a wired test or a different network change the symptom? | A change under the same game conditions makes local Wi-Fi or internet stability worth investigating. |
| Only one friend cannot join | Can the rest of the party play without that person? | The comparison helps isolate one account, platform connection or home network. |
| All online games or platform services fail | Is the platform or internet provider reporting an incident? | Use platform and ISP troubleshooting instead of treating the problem as Collateral-specific. |
Follow this troubleshooting sequence
Perform the checks in order. After each change, retry the same playlist and write down the result. Changing several settings together makes it impossible to know which action mattered.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Confirm the game, platform and account context
- Verify that you mean Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, not another Call of Duty title or a community nickname for a different map.
- Record whether you are on PlayStation, Xbox or PC, and whether party members are on the same or different platforms.
- Note your region, game version and the exact wording of any error.
- Check whether the problem occurs in solo matchmaking, only while grouped, or both.
These details determine which platform status page and support path apply. They also prevent a generic “Collateral mode” search from being diagnosed as a game feature that official documentation does not name.
2. Verify the current playlist in the game
Do not assume that a 2021 24/7 announcement remains active. If Collateral or Collateral Strike is absent, select a currently listed playlist and test matchmaking there. Save a screenshot of the present playlist screen if you need to report the issue; include the date and your region because rotations can be time-limited.
3. Check Activision and platform service status
Open Activision’s Online Services status page and follow its links to the network-status page for your platform. Service status is time-sensitive, so check it when the failure occurs rather than relying on an earlier “all clear.” Also check the platform’s own outage notices and any maintenance message shown in the console or launcher.

- The iconic Black Ops series is back with Call of Duty: Black Ops cold War - the direct sequel to the original and fan-favourite Call of Duty: Black Ops.
- Black Ops cold War will drop fans into the depths of the Cold War's volatile geopolitical battle of the early 1980s. Nothing is ever as it seems in a gripping single-player campaign, where players will come face-to-face with historical figures and hard truths, as they battle around the globe through iconic locales like East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey, Soviet kgb headquarters and more.
- as Elite operatives, you will follow the trail of a shadowy figure named perseus who is on a mission to destabilize the global balance of Power and change the course of history. Descend into the dark center of this global conspiracy alongside iconic characters woods, Mason and Hudson and a new cast of operatives attempting to stop a plot decades in the making.
An outage, authentication incident or maintenance window is upstream of your router. Buying networking equipment, forwarding ports or reinstalling the game will not repair a service-side interruption. Wait for the incident to clear, then retry the same queue.
4. Restart the router and the game session
- Exit the multiplayer session and close the game completely; do not leave it suspended in the background.
- Power off the router or gateway using its normal power control.
- Wait for it to finish shutting down, then power it back on and allow its internet connection to return fully.
- Restart the console or PC, launch the game again and test the same playlist.
This is a general connection reset, not a Collateral-specific repair. If the symptom is unchanged, move to the next test instead of repeating reboots indefinitely.
5. Stop competing traffic temporarily
Pause downloads, video streams, cloud backups, software updates and other bandwidth-heavy applications on the home network. Ask other users not to start large transfers during the test. Retest matchmaking with the same party and playlist. If the result changes only while competing traffic is stopped, investigate home-network capacity or traffic management; if it does not, restore normal use and continue.
6. Check your connection speed and consistency
Run a speed test on the same device or network path used for play and record the time of the test. A single speed result does not prove that the game is healthy or unhealthy, but it can reveal an obvious interruption or severe slowdown. Compare the result with a second test after the router restart rather than treating an old measurement as current.
Do not convert an unspecified speed result into a made-up minimum requirement. The official material reviewed does not provide a Collateral-specific speed threshold.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Try a wired Ethernet connection
If possible, connect the console or PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and repeat the same queue. Activision lists a wired connection as a general troubleshooting step. Treat it as a diagnostic comparison:

- Includes PS5 version on disc. Not playable on PS4 system or disc less PS5 system.
- Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription
- If wired play works while Wi-Fi repeatedly fails, investigate wireless signal strength, interference, distance from the router or local congestion.
- If wired play has the same failure, Wi-Fi conditions are less likely to be the main cause, although the internet service or game service can still be at fault.
- If the Collateral playlist is not listed, wired play cannot bring it back; availability remains a separate issue.
Record whether the change affects searching, joining or mid-match disconnects. Disconnect the cable and restore your normal setup only after the comparison is complete.
8. Test party and player isolation
When only one friend cannot join, have the remaining players attempt the playlist without that person. Then let the affected player try a different playlist or a solo search. Compare the outcomes:
- Everyone fails together: check service status and the host’s connection path first.
- The party plays when one member leaves: collect that member’s platform, region, error text and wired-versus-Wi-Fi result.
- The affected player fails in every online game: use the platform and internet-provider support path rather than a Collateral diagnosis.
- The affected player fails only for one playlist: capture the playlist name and rotation details before making network changes.
This comparison does not prove which component is defective, but it narrows the next support question without changing several variables at once.
NAT and latency: useful clues, not Collateral requirements
Matchmaking can be influenced by the network environment and latency. Console support documentation, including Nintendo’s matchmaking guidance, recommends changing one condition at a time and testing after each change; it also discusses NAT conditions in that console’s own context. Those categories and instructions should not be presented as official Black Ops Cold War requirements.
Use the NAT indicator shown by your own platform as a clue. If the platform reports a restricted condition or a general connectivity warning, follow that platform’s documented remedy and retest. Do not infer that a particular NAT label automatically explains a Collateral-only failure, and do not treat a favorable label as proof that the game playlist is currently populated.
Latency can vary with region, route and time of day. A player may therefore see different results from a friend even when both have the same game version. Record the region and the time of each test so support can distinguish a persistent fault from a temporary route or service event.
Do not copy port numbers from another game
Port-forwarding guides are often written for a named game and platform. Bungie’s advanced NAT and port-forwarding material, for example, concerns Destiny; it is not a verified source for Black Ops Cold War Collateral matchmaking. The official material reviewed here gives no Collateral-specific port numbers.
Before changing firewall or router rules, check that the instructions are written for your exact game, platform and current edition. An unverified rule can create a new connectivity problem, expose services unnecessarily or mask the original cause. The practical sequence is service-status check, restart, bandwidth reduction, speed check and wired comparison—not importing another game’s port list.
What to collect before contacting support
If the sequence does not resolve the problem, provide a reproducible description instead of only saying “Collateral does not work.” Include:
- Game title and platform.
- Region and game version.
- The exact playlist name as displayed, or confirmation that Collateral is absent.
- Exact error text, including any code.
- Whether the failure is an empty search, failed join, party kick or disconnect after the match begins.
- Whether other multiplayer playlists work.
- Whether solo and party searches differ, and which player is affected.
- Date and approximate time of each attempt.
- Whether restarting the router, pausing other traffic or using wired Ethernet changed the result.
- Relevant Activision and platform service-status messages.
Keep the tests comparable: use the same playlist, party arrangement and network setup when you retest. A short timeline showing “Wi-Fi search failed, wired search failed, standard playlist worked” is more useful than a list of unrelated router settings.
Decision guide
| Result after testing | Next action |
|---|---|
| Collateral is absent, while other playlists work | Wait for an official rotation or event listing; there is no network fix for an unavailable queue. |
| Activision or the platform reports an outage | Wait for service recovery and retry; avoid changing router rules during the incident. |
| All playlists fail, but services are operational | Continue local-network checks, compare wired and Wi-Fi, and then contact platform or ISP support if the issue persists. |
| Only Wi-Fi fails and Ethernet works | Investigate the wireless path, interference and local congestion. |
| Only one party member fails | Isolate that player’s platform, account, region and network path; provide the comparison to support. |
| Every test has the same result and no current Collateral listing exists | Treat playlist availability as the primary explanation, not a Collateral-specific connection defect. |
What is and is not established
Established official facts are limited to the map variants and the historical 2021 Collateral playlist promotion. Activision’s current Online Services page supports checking platform status and applying broad connection steps, but status can change from hour to hour. No current official source confirms a live Collateral playlist, a current player population or a named mode-specific matchmaking bug. Because the platform, region, error and failure stage were not specified, any diagnosis beyond the decision flow would be guesswork.
Recommended Free Tools
The reliable approach is therefore to separate two questions: is the desired playlist available now? and does the player’s connection work in available online queues? Answer the first in the game’s current playlist screen, then answer the second with service-status, restart, traffic, speed and wired tests.
