You can import a RuneScape character into a Jagex Account to manage it with Jagex Account credentials, but you cannot transfer that character’s progress, stats, or items into Old School RuneScape. The two games use separate profiles, so starting Old School means starting a new character.
What “transferring a RuneScape account” can mean
There are two different changes players may mean by “transfer”:

- Change how you sign in: Import an existing character into a Jagex Account. This groups character access under Jagex Account credentials; it does not move game progress. See Jagex’s character upgrade instructions.
- Switch from RuneScape to Old School RuneScape: Your character information, stats, and items do not carry across. Jagex describes progress as completely independent between the two games in its RuneScape and Old School support page.
One RuneScape account can provide access to both versions, but each version keeps its own profile. You can return to your existing RuneScape character in RuneScape; the Old School character must be developed separately.

Importing changes account access, not the character’s game progress. Before you begin, make sure you can access the email address you intend to use and that you are signed in to the Jagex Account you want to keep. Jagex says an imported character cannot be removed or moved to a different Jagex Account, and separate Jagex Accounts cannot be merged.

Characters that use another sign-in method
Characters created through Google, Apple, Steam, Facebook, Axeso5, or UOL have a documented upgrade/import route. Authenticate the character through Jagex’s process for that sign-in method, then import it into the intended Jagex Account. Follow the relevant steps in Jagex’s third-party login upgrade instructions.

Jagex says the old RuneScape login details become invalid after an upgrade; use the Jagex Account credentials to access the imported character. The import is a one-way choice: characters cannot be removed from a Jagex Account or moved to another one, and separate Jagex Accounts cannot be combined. Jagex’s upgrade guidance and character removal FAQ explain these limits.
A Jagex Account can hold up to 20 characters, according to Jagex Support. Because imports cannot be undone, check that you are using the intended Jagex Account before adding a character.
Membership and playing both versions
Jagex’s Jagex Accounts FAQ says membership purchased for a character applies to both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. That shared membership does not combine profiles: character progress remains independent. The same FAQ says the Jagex Launcher supports the official RuneScape and Old School clients, as well as RuneLite.

Protect your account and avoid transfer scams
Use Jagex’s official account settings and support instructions for upgrades. Jagex recommends enabling two-step authentication and warns players about fake sites that ask for login details. Do not enter your credentials on a site another player recommends to transfer stats, items, or gold.
Jagex’s Rules of RuneScape prohibit sharing, transferring, or lending your account to another person. That rule is distinct from importing your own character into a Jagex Account. The rules also say players cannot multi-log to move Gold (GP) or items between RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, and warn that swapping offers carry risks; Jagex says it cannot help if such an agreement goes wrong.
