Yes—some Steam accounts can be recovered, but the right steps depend on why you’re locked out. Use Steam Support’s official recovery process for forgotten credentials or a suspected hijack; if Steam has restricted the account, read the notice because the available remedy depends on the restriction.
First, identify why you can’t access the account
“Locked out” can mean a forgotten password or account name, a hijacked account, a security lock, or an enforcement restriction. These situations do not all follow the same recovery route. - Forgotten credentials: Start with Steam’s lost-account recovery flow.
- Suspected theft or hijacking: Secure your computer and associated email account before resetting the Steam password.
- A lock or restriction notice: Read the notice and follow its instructions; some locks require contacting Support, while other restrictions may be temporary or permanent.
Recover a forgotten password, account name, or email
- Go to the Steam Support Help Site and select the account recovery option for a lost or forgotten account.
- Follow the prompts to look up the account and reset access.
- If automatic recovery cannot find or restore the account, use the Support contact form offered during the process. If you no longer have access to the account’s contact email, Steam says to contact Support.

Recover an account you think was stolen
Do these steps in order: malware on a computer can capture credentials, and an intruder with access to your email may interfere with account recovery.

- Scan the computer for malicious software. Steam recommends doing this before changing the Steam password.
- Change the password for the email account associated with Steam. This helps prevent someone who controls that mailbox from disrupting recovery.
- Open Steam Support yourself by entering the official Help Site address in your browser. Use its account recovery flow, and enter credentials only on official Steam websites.
- If self-recovery fails, contact Steam Support. Be ready to provide proof of ownership, possible Steam login names, and email addresses associated with the account.
Changing the account’s email, password, or phone number does not necessarily prevent recovery. Follow the prompts and provide the information Steam requests. See Steam’s guidance on account theft and recovering a stolen or hijacked account.
What if Steam says the account is restricted or banned?
A restriction notice is different from a forgotten-password problem. Read the active notification to see what is restricted, why, and whether Steam directs you to contact Support. Steam says some locks require the owner to contact Support; other restrictions can be temporary or permanent. General recovery steps cannot determine whether a particular enforcement restriction will be lifted—that depends on the notice and Steam’s review.

Avoid fake Steam Support messages
Use the Steam Support Help Site for account issues. Steam states: “Valve employees will never communicate with you about your account using any chat system including Steam Chat and Discord.” Steam’s Restricted Steam Account guidance

- Ignore claims that a false report will get your account banned.
