Yes—you can use a controller to play Roblox on a Windows PC. Roblox supports gamepad input from Xbox and PlayStation-style controllers, as well as compatible wired and Bluetooth gamepads. However, controller support varies by individual Roblox experience: some work almost like console games, while others still require a mouse or keyboard for menus, chat, building, or text entry.
For the simplest setup, connect the controller before launching Roblox, join an experience, and press a button. You can keep your keyboard and mouse connected and switch between input methods as needed.

What controllers work with Roblox on PC?
Roblox officially documents support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers, including gamepads connected to a PC through Bluetooth. Common options include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Xbox Wireless Controller
- Xbox One controllers
- Xbox Series X|S controllers
- PlayStation DualShock 4
- PlayStation DualSense
- Wired USB gamepads
- Generic PC controllers that Windows exposes as Xbox or XInput devices
Roblox’s gamepad input documentation covers both Xbox and PlayStation-style controllers: Roblox gamepad input documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Compatibility still depends on Windows detecting the controller correctly, the connection method, and how the individual experience has implemented gamepad controls. Generic controllers using DirectInput or proprietary drivers may need extra configuration and are not guaranteed to work immediately.
How to connect a controller to Roblox on Windows
USB controller
- Plug the controller into a USB port.
- Wait for Windows to recognize and install the device.
- Open Roblox and join an experience.
- Press a controller button or move a stick.
- Test movement, camera control, jumping, and the Roblox menu.
USB is the best starting point when troubleshooting because it avoids Bluetooth pairing, battery, and wireless-interference problems.
Bluetooth controller
- Turn on the controller and put it into Bluetooth pairing mode. The required button combination varies by model, so use the manufacturer’s instructions.
- In Windows, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Add device → Bluetooth.
- Choose the controller when it appears.
- Launch Roblox, or close and relaunch it if Roblox was already open.
- Join an experience and press a controller button.
Windows labels can differ slightly between releases. If Bluetooth is unreliable, connect the controller by USB and test again.
Which Windows Roblox app should you use?
Roblox currently lists support for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 on PC. The newer Microsoft Store application is named Roblox – Windows and uses a blue icon. Roblox distinguishes it from the older Microsoft Store app named simply Roblox, which uses a light-gray icon. See Roblox’s current Windows app guidance and PC system requirements.

How to test whether Roblox recognizes the controller
Join a familiar experience and try these standard functions:
- Left stick: move your character.
- Right stick: move the camera.
- A or Cross: jump or confirm, depending on the experience.
- B or Circle: cancel or go back in supported interfaces.
- Start, Options, or Menu: open the Roblox menu. Roblox’s default input documentation maps the gamepad Start button to the Roblox menu.
- Shoulder buttons and D-pad: cycle tools, tabs, or items where the experience supports them.
The exact mapping is not universal. One experience may use a shoulder button for inventory while another uses it for an ability. Roblox exposes gamepad detection and preferred-input systems such as GamepadEnabled and PreferredInput; practical behavior is still determined partly by the experience.
Roblox can also use keyboard, mouse, and gamepad input at the same time. On PC, interacting with the controller generally makes it the preferred input, while moving the mouse or pressing a keyboard key may return focus or prompts to keyboard and mouse.

Roblox supplies default gamepad behavior for common actions such as movement, camera control, and some menus. Experience developers must make custom gameplay systems and interfaces controller-friendly. An experience may therefore let you walk and jump with a controller while leaving its inventory, shop, building tools, or custom menus mouse-only.
Developers have access to tools including gamepad testing and the Input Action System, UserInputService, and GamepadService. That does not automatically make every published experience console-ready.
Experiences displaying controller prompts or designed for console play are usually the better candidates, but prompts alone are not a guarantee that every interface will be navigable.
Can you play Roblox without a keyboard and mouse?
Often, yes—but “playable” does not mean every Roblox feature can be operated comfortably with only a controller.

A controller is usually a good fit for
- Obbies and platforming
- Racing and driving
- Sports games
- Fighting games
- Action and adventure experiences
You may still need a keyboard or mouse for
- Typing chat
- Entering text in search boxes
- Account settings and avatar editing
- Building or scripting
- Complex inventories and cursor-heavy menus
- Text-heavy role-playing and simulation experiences
- Experiences designed primarily around mouse input
The practical setup for many PC players is a hybrid one: use the controller for movement and gameplay, the mouse for menus and cursor-based interfaces, and the keyboard for chat, search, and shortcuts.
Xbox versus PlayStation controllers on Roblox PC
Both Xbox and PlayStation-style controllers can work with Roblox. An Xbox controller is often the least complicated choice on Windows because Xbox-style layouts and button names are common in PC gamepad conventions and Roblox control prompts. That is a practical compatibility preference, not a rule that PlayStation controllers are unsupported.
A DualShock 4 or DualSense may work natively, but Windows or a particular experience may present it as an Xbox-style controller. You might see A/B/X/Y prompts while holding a PlayStation controller. That is usually a button-label mismatch rather than evidence that the controller has failed.

Controller not working on Roblox? Try these fixes
- Check Windows first. Confirm the controller appears under Windows Bluetooth or device settings.
- Test outside Roblox. Use another PC game or a Windows controller test utility to determine whether the hardware and buttons work.
- Try USB. A wired connection can isolate Bluetooth pairing and wireless problems.
- Check power and distance. Recharge or replace batteries and reduce distance or interference.
- Close and reopen Roblox. If Roblox was launched before the controller connected, a restart may help.
- Disconnect extra controllers. Temporarily remove other gamepads and unusual input devices.
- Check the controller mode. Some generic gamepads switch between XInput and DirectInput. XInput mode is generally the more straightforward choice for Windows games.
- Try another experience. If movement works elsewhere, the original experience may have limited or missing gamepad support.
- Use the current Roblox app. If you have the older Microsoft Store app, install or switch to Roblox – Windows.
- Update carefully. Install available Windows updates and official controller firmware or software where applicable.
Avoid starting with unofficial remapping software. Native USB or Bluetooth input should be tested first; remappers can introduce incorrect mappings or conflicts, and their implications vary across games.
What if movement works but menus do not?
Gameplay input and interface navigation are separate systems. An experience can correctly read the left stick and still fail to provide gamepad navigation for its custom menus, inventory, shop, or text fields.
Try pressing the controller’s Start/Menu button to open Roblox’s interface, then test the D-pad, sticks, and confirm/cancel buttons. If the experience’s custom interface still cannot be navigated, keep a mouse nearby and use it for menus. Testing another experience can confirm whether the limitation is game-specific.
Is a controller better than keyboard and mouse?
| Choose a controller when you value… | Choose keyboard and mouse when you value… |
|---|---|
| Comfort from a couch or in front of a TV | Precise aiming and camera control |
| Analog movement | Fast typing and chat |
| Racing, driving, sports, and action controls | Building, inventory management, and complex menus |
| Familiar console-style controls | Cursor accuracy and keyboard shortcuts |
For shooters and competitive cursor-heavy experiences, keyboard and mouse are often more practical. For driving, sports, platforming, and many action games, analog sticks and triggers can feel more natural. If you play a mixture of genres, there is no need to choose permanently: leave both input methods connected and use each where it works best.
Should you buy a controller for Roblox?
Buy one if you mostly play controller-friendly genres, want to play from a couch or television, or prefer analog movement. Do not buy one expecting it to replace the keyboard and mouse across every Roblox experience.
The sensible order is to use an existing Xbox, PlayStation, or compatible USB controller first. If you need to buy one, an Xbox Wireless Controller is a straightforward Windows-oriented choice; an existing DualSense or DualShock 4 is worth testing; and a wired XInput-compatible gamepad is a reasonable budget experiment. Exact prices and availability vary by region, model, color, and sale, so they should be checked at the time of purchase.
