Rocket League works with Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, DualShock 4, DualSense, and Steam Controller models on PC. For the most reliable setup, connect the controller by USB before launching the game, start Rocket League through Epic Games Launcher or Steam, press a controller button at the title screen, then test it in Free Play.
Bluetooth can work, but Rocket League Support warns that it is not officially supported for Rocket League on Steam and recommends USB when wireless input causes problems. See the official supported-controller list and Rocket League controller troubleshooting guide.

What controllers work with Rocket League on PC?
Rocket League officially lists these controller families for PC:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Xbox 360 Controller
- Xbox One Controller
- Xbox Series X|S Controller
- PlayStation 4 DualShock 4
- PlayStation 5 DualSense
- Steam Controller
Third-party controllers may also work, but compatibility is not guaranteed. A model with XInput or an Xbox-compatible mode is usually the least complicated choice on Windows. Controllers that only expose DirectInput may need Steam Input or another compatibility layer.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Quick setup: connect a controller and start playing
- Exit Rocket League completely.
- Connect the controller directly to the PC with a data-capable USB cable. Avoid a USB hub while troubleshooting.
- Wait for Windows to recognize it.
- Start Epic Games Launcher or Steam, then launch Rocket League.
- At the title screen, press a face button to become Player 1.
- Open Settings → Controls and review the bindings.
- Enter Free Play and test steering, throttle, brake, jump, boost, air roll, and camera controls before joining an online match.
Connecting the controller before starting Rocket League matters: connecting it while the game is launching can cause detection or player-assignment problems.
Connect an Xbox controller
USB
USB is the simplest diagnostic and setup method. Use a cable that carries data, not a charge-only cable. Connect the controller directly to the computer, wait for Windows to identify it, and then launch Rocket League. Xbox-style controllers commonly use XInput, the input standard many Windows games recognize without additional software.
Bluetooth or wireless
To pair a compatible Xbox controller, turn on Bluetooth in Windows, put the controller into pairing mode, then open Windows Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth and select the controller. Some Xbox controllers instead use a dedicated wireless receiver. That requires the correct receiver and available USB port.

If wireless play is unreliable, switch to USB first. This removes pairing, battery, interference, and receiver problems from the diagnosis; it does not by itself prove that wired play has lower input latency.
Connect a PS4 or PS5 controller
DualShock 4
A DualShock 4 is officially supported by Rocket League. Start with USB. If it is not detected, update the controller and Windows, restart the PC, and try again. On Steam, Steam Input may help translate the controller for the game, but a native setup can be preferable when it already works.
DualSense
For a DualSense, USB is the best first test. For Bluetooth pairing, hold the Create and PS buttons until the light bar flashes. In Windows, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth, then choose the controller. PlayStation describes this pairing process in its PC support documentation.
If Rocket League does not recognize the DualSense, update its controller software or firmware, disconnect it, restart the PC, and reconnect it through USB or Bluetooth. Bluetooth reliability depends on the controller, Bluetooth hardware, drivers, interference, battery level, and launcher. Rocket League’s official DualSense troubleshooting steps are documented here.

Why are Xbox buttons displayed?
PlayStation controllers can show Xbox-style prompts when Steam Input translates their input into an Xbox-compatible gamepad. The controller can still function normally: Xbox A corresponds to PlayStation Cross, B to Circle, X to Square, and Y to Triangle. Changing a Steam setting may not restore PlayStation glyphs in every launcher or configuration.
Epic Games Launcher setup
The Epic version normally does not require a separate controller utility for officially supported Xbox or PlayStation controllers.
- Close Rocket League.
- Connect the controller, preferably by USB.
- Close unnecessary controller utilities and overlays.
- Open Epic Games Launcher and start Rocket League.
- Press a controller button at the title screen.
- Test the controls in Free Play.
If you use an unofficial workaround such as adding Epic Games Launcher to Steam, remember that it adds another input layer and is not a guaranteed fix. It can make it harder to determine whether Epic, Steam Input, a remapper, or Rocket League is handling the controller.
Steam-specific setup and Steam Input
Steam can either pass a supported controller through natively or translate it with Steam Input. Steam Input may present a controller to the game as an ordinary Xbox-style gamepad, which can help with unsupported devices but can also change prompts or create conflicts.
To review Steam’s controller settings, open Steam → Settings → Controller. If a PlayStation or Xbox controller behaves incorrectly, test the equivalent PlayStation- or Xbox-controller configuration-support toggle with it disabled, restart Steam, and then restart the PC. Steam’s labels can vary between client versions, so look for the controller-support option for the device you are testing. Rocket League’s Steam troubleshooting guidance is available from Epic Games Support.
When should Steam Input be enabled?
- Use native input first when an officially supported controller works without translation.
- Try Steam Input when the controller is not detected, uses an unusual input mode, or needs its inputs translated.
- Test one mode at a time. Running native support, Steam Input, and a remapper together can cause duplicate or missing commands.
Common Steam Input symptoms include the controller moving the mouse, Xbox prompts appearing on a PlayStation pad, duplicated inputs, or a controller working in Steam but not inside Rocket League.
Configure Rocket League controls
From the main menu, open Settings → Controls. You can view or change bindings for:

- Steering and air steer
- Throttle and brake/reverse
- Jump and boost
- Powerslide and air roll
- Ball cam and rear view
- Camera controls
- Push-to-talk, where applicable
Rocket League does not require a special profile for basic controller use. The right test is whether each action responds correctly in Free Play.
| Action | Common beginner assignment |
|---|---|
| Jump | A / Cross |
| Boost | B / Circle |
| Powerslide | X / Square |
| Air roll | X / Square or a shoulder button |
| Ball cam | Y / Triangle |
| Throttle | Right trigger |
| Brake/reverse | Left trigger |
This is only a starting layout, not a required competitive configuration. Adjust it if two actions are difficult to use together, then test the result in Free Play and a private exhibition match.
Make the controller Player 1
Rocket League may prioritize the first active input device. If your controller appears as Player 2:
- Close Rocket League.
- Disconnect other controllers.
- Unplug flight sticks, HOTAS hardware, racing wheels, and other nonessential USB devices.
- Close controller emulators and remapping software.
- Connect only the intended controller.
- Restart Rocket League and press a button at the title screen.
Other USB devices can expose gamepad-like inputs and be selected first, which is why removing them is more useful than repeatedly changing bindings.
Check whether Windows sees the controller
Test Windows before changing Rocket League settings:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
joy.cpland press Enter. - Select the controller and choose Properties.
- Press buttons and move the analog sticks on the test screen.
If the controller does not respond in joy.cpl, the problem is below the game level. Check the cable, USB port, Bluetooth pairing, battery, drivers, and controller hardware first.

- Disconnect other controllers and unusual USB devices.
- Test the device in
joy.cpl. - Try another data cable and USB port.
- Update the controller firmware or software.
- On Steam, test Steam Input enabled and disabled, one mode at a time.
- Close overlays and remappers such as DS4Windows or reWASD while testing.
- In Windows Device Manager, remove or reinstall the controller device, then reconnect it.
Third-party tools can solve specialized compatibility problems, but they may create duplicate devices or keyboard/mouse emulation. They are not required by default for DualShock 4 or DualSense controllers listed as supported by Rocket League.
When menus work but the car does not
Check that the controller is assigned to the correct local player and that the game is not receiving competing keyboard or remapped input. Return to Free Play, confirm each action, and then try a private exhibition match. If wireless input stops after leaving the menu, check battery level, interference, and whether Steam Input changes profiles between the launcher and the game.

Choose based on compatibility and reliability rather than an unverified claim that one controller improves gameplay:
- Xbox controller: Usually the simplest Windows/XInput-style option.
- DualShock 4 or DualSense: A sensible choice if you already own one, with USB recommended when troubleshooting.
- Third-party controller: Prefer Windows support, XInput mode, USB fallback, firmware-update software, and a clear warranty or return policy.
- Unusual or Nintendo controllers: May need Steam Input or another compatibility layer and are not among Rocket League Support’s explicitly listed families.
A USB-C data cable, Bluetooth adapter, or 2.4 GHz receiver is worth considering only when it addresses a specific connection problem. Check current system requirements through the launcher and current Steam information rather than relying on old store-page requirements; Steam Client support currently targets Windows 10 and later.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a PS5 controller on PC?
Yes. Rocket League lists DualSense as supported. Use USB first, then update the controller and try Bluetooth if needed.
Do I need DS4Windows?
No. DualShock 4 and DualSense are officially listed as supported. Use a remapper only for a specific compatibility need, and disable it while testing native input.
Does Bluetooth work with Rocket League?
It may work, but reliability varies. Rocket League Support warns that Bluetooth is not officially supported for Rocket League on Steam and recommends USB when wireless input fails.
Why does my controller work in Windows but not Rocket League?
The game may have started before the controller was connected, another device may be Player 1, or Steam Input and remapping software may be conflicting. Restart with only the intended controller connected and test the input layer one at a time.
Can I play Rocket League without a controller?
Yes. A controller is supported but not required; Rocket League can also be played with keyboard and mouse.
