Yes. You can use a PS5 in Australia, but check the electrical rating on the exact console before plugging in an imported unit. Power compatibility is separate from account-region rules and disc compatibility: an overseas console may work electrically while its store, vouchers, or downloadable add-ons still have regional restrictions.
Check the console’s power rating first
Sony’s Australian safety guides list 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz for the Australian model groups covered by those manuals: Sony PS5 setup and safety information and Sony PS5 safety guide. That specification should not be assumed for every PS5 sold overseas. Read the electrical rating on the console or find the manual for its exact model before connecting it to Australian mains power.
A plug adapter changes the plug shape; it does not convert voltage. If the console’s label does not cover the local supply voltage, do not plug it in on the assumption that an adapter is enough. Confirm the right power arrangement for that specific unit.
Set up the PS5 in Australia
For initial setup, Sony’s instructions call for a display, power, an internet connection, and a PlayStation account. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect and configure the console.

- Connect the AC power cable to the console and a suitable electricity supply, after confirming the console’s rating.
- Connect to the internet and install any system update the console prompts you to install.
- Sign in to an existing PlayStation account or create one.
Choose the account region carefully
PlayStation Store content and services vary by country or region. Sony says an account’s country/region cannot be changed after the account is created. If you use an existing overseas account in Australia, its region remains relevant to Store access, purchases, and vouchers; an Australian console does not automatically change it.
Voucher codes must match the account’s region. Check the code’s region and your account settings before buying or redeeming a voucher.

Check game discs and DLC for region mismatches
A disc game and its downloadable add-ons can have different regional licensing. Sony warns that an add-on may not work with a disc game if the disc’s licensed region differs from the account region. Before buying DLC, check the game’s packaging and confirm the account region is compatible.
Physical-media playback is a separate question from whether the console can run games. Check the exact console manual and the region or format printed on the movie disc. Sony’s Australian manuals list region codes for the specific Australian model groups they cover; they do not guarantee that every imported movie or disc will play.

Disc Edition or Digital Edition?
If you are choosing a console in Australia, the main practical difference is whether you need a built-in disc drive for physical games or movie discs. Sony also sells an optional drive for particular slim Digital Edition models, but it is not a universal add-on for every digital PS5.

Buying or bringing an imported PS5
When comparing an Australian model with an imported one, verify the imported console’s exact power rating and consider whether its account region, vouchers, and physical-media needs suit your use. Do not assume an individual imported console has Australian warranty coverage: Sony’s Australian buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered, and coverage for a particular unit depends on its sale and warranty details.
