How to set up one Joy-Con per player in Super Mario Party

Start the local multiplayer flow in Super Mario Party and pair the Joy-Con controllers.

When the Change Grip and Order screen appears, hold each player’s Joy-Con horizontally and press SL and SR on it to confirm the individual horizontal grip.

Assign one Joy-Con to each player. Nintendo’s instructions support up to four players on one Switch console.

Pairing alone does not set a Joy-Con as an individual horizontal controller; confirm its grip when prompted. Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions state: “Each player must use a single Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con controller.”
How Super Mario Party uses the Joy-Con
Minigames do not all use the controller in the same way. Depending on the minigame, play can involve buttons or motion controls, and Nintendo’s minigame information shows both horizontal and vertical Joy-Con orientations. Follow the control prompt for the minigame you are playing.
Does the same answer apply to Super Mario Party Jamboree?
Super Mario Party Jamboree is a separate game. Nintendo says Joy-Con controllers are required for its motion-control minigames, but its support instructions caution that controller requirements can vary by mode. The official information reviewed does not establish a universal one-Joy-Con rule for every Jamboree mode. Check the selected mode’s controller prompt rather than assuming the setup is identical to Super Mario Party. See Nintendo’s Jamboree product information and multiplayer instructions.

For Super Mario Party, each local player needs a Joy-Con, so adding a player means having another Joy-Con available. Nintendo’s official game page also directs buyers to additional Joy-Con controllers.
