On a PC or phone, connection options and compatibility depend on the controller revision and the device’s operating system. Pairing successfully also does not guarantee that a particular game supports controllers. Microsoft’s compatibility details were checked on October 9, 2026; see its controller compatibility page.
Where an Xbox controller works
| Device | What the compatibility information establishes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Microsoft lists Windows PCs as supported. Compatible controllers can connect by Bluetooth or cable; a Windows Xbox Wireless Adapter is another option. | Windows version, controller revision, connection method, and whether the game supports controller input. |
| Android phone or tablet | Microsoft lists Android devices among supported categories and Bluetooth as a wireless option for compatible devices. | Android version, controller revision, and game support. |
| iPhone or other Apple device | Microsoft lists iOS among supported categories. Apple documents wireless Xbox-controller connections on supported iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro devices. | Apple device and operating-system requirements, controller revision, and game support. |
| Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S | Microsoft lists these Xbox console families as compatible with the current Xbox Wireless Controller. | Use the controller with a supported Xbox console. |
| Nintendo Switch or PlayStation | The manufacturer compatibility information cited here does not establish native support for these consoles. | Do not assume direct compatibility. Any third-party adapter requires model-specific confirmation from its maker. |
Connect it to a Windows PC
Choose the method that fits your PC and controller. Microsoft documents Bluetooth, wired use, and its Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows as options. The adapter is optional; Bluetooth or a cable may be sufficient.

Bluetooth
- Check that your controller revision supports Bluetooth and that your PC runs a compatible version of Windows. Microsoft lists Bluetooth support for compatible Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs.
- Open your PC’s Bluetooth settings and choose the option to add a device. Put the controller into pairing mode, then select it when it appears.
- Open the game and check its controller settings. A successful Windows connection does not mean every game accepts controller input.
See Microsoft’s Bluetooth connection instructions for Windows.
USB cable
Connect the controller to the PC with a compatible cable. The current controller has a USB-C port, but older controller models may use a different port; check the controller itself before choosing a cable. Microsoft documents wired use with its USB-C cable product.

Connect it to a phone or Apple device
For a compatible wireless controller, Bluetooth is the relevant connection method. Check both the controller generation and the host device’s operating-system requirements; Microsoft qualifies compatibility to select devices and OS versions.

PlayStation and Nintendo consoles
Microsoft’s listed console compatibility is for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The manufacturer documentation cited here does not establish native Xbox-controller compatibility with PlayStation or Nintendo Switch. Third-party adapters may claim to bridge particular devices, but compatibility depends on the adapter, controller, console, and sometimes firmware. Verify the adapter maker’s current model-specific documentation before relying on one.

Steam Link
Steam’s Steam Link hardware FAQ lists the Xbox One S Controller among supported controllers, including Bluetooth use. That specific statement should not be generalized to every Xbox controller, streaming app, or game.

Compatibility has two separate parts: whether the device can connect to the controller, and whether the game or app accepts its input. Microsoft’s page limits compatibility to select devices and operating-system versions. Steam likewise notes that not all Steam games support controller use in its controller support guidance.
