How an Xbox gift card can pay for Fortnite
An Xbox gift card funds a Microsoft account, rather than a Fortnite or Epic Games account. Microsoft says redeemed gift cards add money to the Microsoft account balance, which can be spent on eligible Store content subject to restrictions: Add money to your Microsoft account and Spend the money in my Microsoft account.

For Fortnite, the relevant route is to select an eligible offer—such as a V-Bucks offer—in the Xbox or Microsoft Store purchase flow. Epic says different payment platforms may be used when Fortnite is played on other platforms, but that does not guarantee Microsoft balance will be offered for every item, region, or account. The checkout options for your specific offer are decisive. See Epic’s Fortnite FAQ and Xbox’s guidance on using account balance to buy games, apps, and more.
How to use the balance
- Redeem the card to the right Microsoft account. Use Microsoft’s gift-card redemption instructions. Make sure this is the account you intend to use for the Xbox purchase.
- Open the Xbox or Microsoft Store purchase flow. Find the Fortnite offer you want, such as a V-Bucks pack, while signed in to that same Microsoft account.
- Check the checkout payment options. Confirm Microsoft account balance is offered and that it covers the purchase. If it is not available or sufficient, do not assume the gift card can be applied another way; Microsoft account funds have eligibility restrictions.
- Verify the linked Fortnite account. Make sure the Xbox account is connected to the Epic account where you want the purchase or V-Bucks. Epic’s account and platform rules affect where purchases and balances appear.
Xbox gift cards, Fortnite Gift Cards, and V-Bucks cards are different

Epic says Fortnite Gift Cards are replacing V-Bucks cards in a global rollout, although legacy V-Bucks cards may still be sold in some regions during the transition. Check the product and redemption instructions before buying; the card names do not mean the products fund the same account.

Check platform and region before buying
Microsoft account balance is subject to purchase restrictions, while Fortnite Gift Card availability and account-balance limits vary by region. Do not assume that a card bought in one country can be redeemed or spent in another; check the card terms and the payment options on your account.
V-Bucks availability across platforms also depends on Fortnite’s Shared Wallet rules. Epic identifies Nintendo Switch as an exception for purchased V-Bucks: those V-Bucks do not transfer to other platforms. Items bought with V-Bucks are available on platforms where you play Fortnite. If you plan to spend a balance away from Xbox, check Epic’s current platform transfer guidance before purchasing.
