No—Angel Reese is not an official selectable character in Nintendo Switch Sports Basketball. Nintendo’s published game information documents Basketball, Mii and avatar support, and motion controls, but it does not list Reese as a licensed player, preset or character with unique abilities.
You can still make a player-created Mii or avatar inspired by her appearance and then use it in Basketball. The likeness is your own customization, not an official Reese inclusion or endorsement. The guide below separates what Nintendo actually provides from what you can create yourself.

What “using Angel Reese” means in Nintendo Switch Sports
There are two possible interpretations of the question. You may be looking for an official Angel Reese character, or you may want to play Basketball with an avatar that resembles her. Only the second option is available, and even that is an approximation you create yourself.
Nintendo’s official information for Nintendo Switch Sports does not identify Angel Reese as a playable athlete. It does not provide Reese-specific ratings, animations, jersey assets, commentary, abilities or a character-selection entry. Consequently, you should not expect to find her name in a roster or unlock her through progression.

The game does support Mii characters and customizable avatar items. That lets you build a basketball-themed character using the options the game makes available. Calling that character “Angel Reese” is a player-created convention; it does not turn the avatar into an officially licensed representation.
Basketball’s availability and what you need
Install the Basketball update
Basketball was added in Nintendo Switch Sports software Ver. 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024. If Basketball is absent from your game, first let the console update the software, then reopen the game. The version number and update status can be checked through the Nintendo Switch software-update controls on the HOME menu.
The update notes identify Basketball for three types of play: Play Globally, Play Locally and Play with Friends. Availability of a mode can depend on the connection and multiplayer setup you choose, so select the option that matches how you intend to play.

Use a compatible Joy-Con setup
Nintendo describes Basketball as a motion-controlled mode using Joy-Con actions. The game presents the relevant action prompts on screen rather than requiring you to memorize a published written control chart. Hold the Joy-Con as instructed and follow the movement shown for the current action.
For local multiplayer, Nintendo warns that additional accessories may be required. There is no single controller-count rule that applies to every setup in the published information. Start the local mode and use its setup prompts to see whether another Joy-Con or other accessory is needed for the number of players you selected.
How to create a player-created Reese-inspired avatar
Nintendo documents general Mii and avatar support, but it does not publish a Reese-specific customization recipe. The following process therefore describes a safe way to make an inspired look without presenting it as official. Menu wording can change with software updates, so use the labels shown on your console.
- Update and launch Nintendo Switch Sports. Make sure the game is running a version that includes Basketball, beginning with Ver. 1.5.0.
- Open the game’s player, profile or avatar-selection area. Choose the Mii or avatar option offered by the on-screen setup. Nintendo confirms that a Mii character can be used; the game may present other avatar choices as well.
- Select a character you can edit. Start from a Mii or avatar you already use, or create a new one if the game offers that choice. Nothing in the official information indicates a locked Reese preset.
- Choose broad visual cues, not an alleged official likeness. Use the available face, hair, skin-tone, clothing and accessory options to make a basketball player that reminds you of Reese. The exact choices depend on the items unlocked in your game. Do not claim that a particular combination is Nintendo’s or Reese’s approved design.
- Use earned items where available. Nintendo says online play can award avatar items. If you want a wider selection, play the online modes available to you and check the avatar-item rewards presented by the game. An item earned online is still a general game item, not a Reese-branded asset.
- Save or confirm the character, then enter Basketball. Return to the sport-selection screen, choose Basketball and select the newly created Mii or avatar when the player-selection prompt appears.
If a menu does not expose the option you expected, do not infer that a hidden Reese character exists. Check whether you are editing the system Mii, the game’s avatar, or a player profile, then follow the specific prompt displayed by your software version.

Basketball modes and when to choose each one
Nintendo’s Basketball description centers on two formats. The update history also distinguishes where you can play them. These are the real choices available in the game, regardless of which Mii or avatar you use.
| Option | What Nintendo describes | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Two-on-Two | Team play in which players alternate between offense and defense. Nintendo describes dribbling, shooting, blocking, stealing and dunking, including getting past a defender and jumping toward the basket. | Practise switching roles, defending an opponent and coordinating your actions with a teammate. |
| Three-point play | A long-distance shooting format. Nintendo describes a timed contest and a local multiplayer contest. | Work on shot consistency against a clock, or compete with people nearby in the local contest. |
| Play Globally | Online Basketball play included in the Ver. 1.5.0 update. | Play against people through the game’s online matchmaking. |
| Play Locally | Basketball play on the same console or in the same local setup, subject to the accessories requested by the game. | Use a local contest or practice with nearby players. |
| Play with Friends | Friend-based Basketball play listed in Nintendo’s update information. | Invite or join friends instead of relying on open matchmaking. |
Choosing an avatar does not alter these formats. A Reese-inspired character has the same game rules and control framework as any other Mii or avatar.
How the Joy-Con actions work
Nintendo explains the controls by describing the basketball actions rather than publishing a complete button-by-button chart. That means the most reliable instructions are the prompts shown while you play.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Dribbling
In Two-on-Two, dribbling is part of the offensive sequence. Hold and move the Joy-Con exactly as the on-screen demonstration indicates. Concentrate on reproducing the direction and rhythm shown by the game; do not rely on a control combination copied from another basketball title.
Shooting and dunking
Shooting is used in both the general Basketball play and the three-point format. The game presents a motion prompt for the shot. Dunking is also listed among the actions in Nintendo’s Basketball description, with the mode specifically describing jumping high toward the basket. Treat the prompt as the authority for the required movement and timing.
Blocking and stealing
Defense is not a separate menu or character ability. In Two-on-Two, you respond to the opposing player with the defensive actions shown by the game. Blocking and stealing are both documented actions. Watch the opponent, wait for the defensive prompt and perform the indicated Joy-Con motion rather than assuming a universal button press.
Why exact button lists are not included here
The official pages used for this mode give a high-level action overview, not a complete written control chart with every button, timing window or sensitivity value. Exact combinations would therefore be speculation. The in-game tutorial and prompts are the correct source for your controller orientation and current software version.
A practical first session with the inspired avatar
- Start in a low-pressure format. If you are learning the motion controls, begin with the three-point timed contest or another mode whose prompt you can repeat without coordinating a full team.
- Read the demonstration before moving. The prompt shows the intended Joy-Con motion. Keep the controller in the orientation requested and copy the movement instead of improvising.
- Repeat the shot action. Use the timed format to observe whether your shots are early, late, too high or too low. The game’s score and result screen provide feedback, but they do not assign Angel Reese statistics.
- Move to Two-on-Two. Once the shot motion feels familiar, practise alternating offense and defense. On offense, focus on the dribble and shot prompts. On defense, watch for the blocking or stealing action the game presents.
- Try each connection type separately. Play Globally tests online matchmaking, Play Locally tests the local hardware arrangement, and Play with Friends tests the friend-based session. If one setup fails, the other modes can help identify whether the problem is the network, accessories or the game version.
What the avatar cannot do
- It cannot unlock an official Angel Reese roster slot, because Nintendo does not document one.
- It cannot grant Reese-specific strength, rebounding, shooting, dunking or defensive ratings. Basketball uses the game’s own actions and rules rather than a documented athlete-stat system for Reese.
- It cannot import a real player’s statistics from another game, league or season.
- It cannot establish that Reese, Nintendo or a rights holder approved the appearance you created.
- It does not change matchmaking, mode availability or the Joy-Con actions.
If you see a community video or post calling a Mii “Angel Reese,” treat that as the creator’s label unless Nintendo has separately announced licensed content. A visual resemblance made with general avatar parts is not evidence of an official collaboration.
Common problems and fixes
Basketball is missing
Confirm that Nintendo Switch Sports has updated to software Ver. 1.5.0 or later, then close and relaunch the game. Basketball was introduced on July 9, 2024, so an older installation may not show the sport.
The character-selection screen does not show your Mii
Check whether you edited a system Mii, a game avatar or a different player profile. Return to the player or avatar area offered by the game and select the character there. Nintendo confirms Mii use generally, but the published information does not specify one universal menu path for every software revision.
Local multiplayer asks for more equipment
Follow the accessory message generated by the local-play setup. Nintendo cautions that additional accessories may be required, and the requirement can depend on the number of players and the chosen arrangement. Do not assume that one controller configuration works for every local session.
The motion does not register reliably
Pause and reread the on-screen prompt, then hold the Joy-Con in the orientation shown. Avoid using a button combination from another game. If the issue persists, leave the match and run the game’s own setup or calibration instructions before trying the action again.

Nintendo says avatar items can be earned through online play, but not every item is necessarily available at every moment. Check the reward presentation in the online mode you are using. An unavailable item does not indicate that a Reese-specific item is hidden.

How to describe your creation accurately
For screenshots, streams or a local tournament, call the character a “Reese-inspired Mii,” “fan-created Reese look” or another description that makes its status clear. Avoid presenting the avatar as an official Nintendo character, a licensed likeness or a player with real-world statistics.
The same distinction applies to clothing and naming. A generic basketball outfit or a name chosen by the player does not prove a partnership. If you publish an image, explain that it was assembled from the game’s available Mii or avatar options.
Official content versus player customization
| Question | Officially documented answer | What your custom avatar means |
|---|---|---|
| Is Reese selectable by name? | No Reese character or roster entry is identified. | You selected or named a player yourself. |
| Does she have unique ratings? | No Reese-specific ratings or abilities are documented. | The avatar follows the standard Basketball rules. |
| Can you wear a Reese-branded uniform? | No licensed Reese clothing is identified. | Any outfit is a general item you chose or earned. |
| Can online rewards unlock her? | Online play can award avatar items, not a documented Reese character. | Rewards expand customization but do not establish a collaboration. |
This distinction matters when sharing clips or writing a guide. A custom name, facial features or basketball outfit can communicate who inspired the design, but none of those choices changes the game’s licensing status.

Use Three-point play when your immediate goal is repeating a long-distance shot motion. Nintendo describes both a timed contest and a local multiplayer contest, so it is useful for comparing attempts or competing beside another player. It is not evidence that the game has imported a professional player’s shooting profile.
Use Two-on-Two when you want the fuller sequence: dribble while attacking, then respond on defense with blocks or steals. The mode asks you to alternate roles, making it the better choice for learning how the game combines movement prompts with team play. Your Reese-inspired avatar remains cosmetic; the teammate and opponent interactions are the same as for every other avatar.
Use Play Globally for the online option listed in the update, Play Locally for nearby play, and Play with Friends for a friend-based session. These labels describe how you connect, not different Angel Reese versions or different player abilities.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setup checklist before inviting other players
- Confirm the game has installed Ver. 1.5.0 or a later version that includes Basketball.
- Launch Basketball once by yourself so you can see the current Joy-Con prompts and orientation.
- Open the local or friend-based option and read its accessory message before inviting everyone.
- Make sure each participant chooses the intended Mii or avatar at the player-selection step.
- Decide whether you are playing Two-on-Two or the three-point contest before starting, since the action sequence and objective differ.
- Describe the custom character as inspired by Reese rather than official, especially if you are recording or streaming.
This checklist avoids two common misunderstandings: assuming a custom name is an unlockable athlete and assuming every multiplayer arrangement uses the same controller configuration. The game’s own setup screen is the authority for the session you are creating.
What not to promise readers or viewers
Do not promise a hidden code, download, roster trick or progression path that unlocks Reese. The documented material does not identify any of those features. Do not promise that a particular face, hairstyle, color or clothing combination reproduces her exactly; the available options and unlocked items vary by player.
Also avoid attaching real-world claims to an in-game result. A successful dunk, block or three-point score demonstrates that the motion prompt was completed in that match. It does not measure Reese’s real athletic performance, reproduce her statistics or imply that she participated in the game’s design.
Frequently overlooked details
Basketball is a software addition, not a separate Reese-themed product. You need the Nintendo Switch Sports game and a compatible Joy-Con setup for the motion actions described by Nintendo. Nintendo also notes that local multiplayer may require additional accessories, so the practical requirement should be checked after selecting the number of players.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.
Avatar items and the Mii option serve different purposes from licensed character content. They let you personalize who appears on screen, while the sport mode supplies the rules and actions. Earning an item through online play can broaden the look of your character, but it does not convert that character into an official athlete.

Finally, menus and prompts are more reliable than a static written control list. Nintendo’s public description names the actions—dribbling, shooting, blocking, stealing and dunking—but does not provide every button combination or timing value. Follow the demonstration shown by your current software version.
The accurate answer in one sentence
You cannot select Angel Reese as an official Nintendo Switch Sports Basketball player; you can update the game, create your own Reese-inspired Mii or avatar, and use that player in Two-on-Two or three-point Basketball through the game’s normal Joy-Con controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Angel Reese in Nintendo Switch Sports Basketball?
Nintendo’s published information does not identify Angel Reese as a selectable, licensed or unlockable character. A Reese-inspired player must be created by the user.
Can I make a Mii that looks like Angel Reese?
Yes. Nintendo supports Mii characters and avatar customization. Use the available face, hair, clothing and accessory choices, and describe the result as a fan-created approximation rather than an official likeness.

Nintendo says online play can award avatar items, but no Reese-specific outfit or character is documented. Rewards are general customization items unless Nintendo announces otherwise.
Does a Reese-inspired avatar get special basketball abilities?
No. The custom avatar uses the same rules, actions and mode availability as any other Mii or avatar. No Reese-specific ratings or abilities are documented.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Angel Reese is not an official Nintendo Switch Sports Basketball character. Update to Ver. 1.5.0 or later, create a clearly labeled Reese-inspired Mii or avatar, and use it with the game’s standard Joy-Con Basketball modes. Treat online rewards, names and visual resemblance as customization—not proof of a licensed collaboration.
