Usually, yes. PS5 games are part of the same PS5 software library across the current console family, and Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games run on PS5. Compatibility becomes model- and title-dependent for discs, controllers, PS VR equipment, storage, covers, stands and detachable drives. The safest check is the game’s PlayStation Store compatibility label plus the exact CFI model number printed on your console.
Compatibility at a glance
| Item | Works on a new PS5? | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Digital PS5 games | Yes | Sign in to the same PlayStation account and redownload or transfer compatible purchases. |
| Physical PS5 games | Yes, on a console with a disc drive | The disc must remain inserted to play. A Digital Edition needs a supported add-on drive. |
| PS4 digital games | Most | Check the individual game’s Store label and support notes. |
| PS4 discs | Yes, with a drive-equipped PS5 | PS4 discs do not work on a Digital Edition without a compatible drive. |
| PS3 discs | No | PS5 does not support playing PS3 discs. |
| DualSense | Yes | Required for PS5 games. |
| DUALSHOCK 4 | Yes, for supported PS4 games | It cannot control PS5 games. |
| PS VR | Yes, with the required older equipment | Use a PS4 PlayStation Camera and Camera adaptor; the PS5 HD Camera is not a substitute. |
| USB extended storage | Yes | PS4 games can run from it; PS5 games must be copied back to console storage. |
| Covers, stands and bases | Sometimes | Match the accessory to the CFI model group, especially with PS5 Pro. |
Will your PS5 game library carry over?
Digital PS5 purchases
Digital PS5 games are tied to your PlayStation account rather than to one physical console. On the new PS5, sign in with that account, open your game library and download the titles again, or transfer them from the old console over the network. Saved data can be moved with the console’s transfer process or restored from a supported cloud-storage subscription where applicable.

Physical PS5 games
A physical PS5 game works on any PS5 model that has a functioning disc drive. You must insert the disc whenever you start the game; the disc acts as the license even after installation. A console sold as a Digital Edition cannot read the disc until you install a drive that PlayStation lists as compatible with that model.
PS4 games and the 4,000-plus catalogue
PlayStation describes the “overwhelming majority” of its 4,000-plus PS4 games as playable on PS5. That is a publisher compatibility count, not an independently audited total, and it is not a promise that every game behaves identically. Some titles are explicitly PS4-only. Others can show errors, lose functions available on PS4 or exhibit unexpected behavior.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Before buying a used copy, expansion or accessory for a particular game, search that game’s PlayStation Store page. Look for the “PS4 games playable on PS5 consoles” information and read any title-specific support notes. Compatibility lists can change as patches and licensing arrangements change.
PS4 discs, digital editions and transfers
PS4 discs require a PS5 with a disc drive, and the disc has to stay inserted during play. They cannot be used in the original PS5 Digital Edition. Digital PS4 games and compatible save data can be transferred over Wi-Fi or accessed from compatible USB extended storage.
PS5 does not play PS3 discs. Some PS4-era features also have limits on PS5, including the PS4 SHARE menu, tournament functionality, In-Game Live from PlayStation, the Second Screen app and certain game companion apps.
Which controllers and specialty peripherals work?
DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4
DualSense is the controller requirement for PS5 games. A DUALSHOCK 4 can be paired with the PS5, but only for supported PS4 games. If a game has both PS4 and PS5 versions, launching the PS5 version requires DualSense; selecting the PS4 version is the usual way to use DUALSHOCK 4.

Licensed gamepads, wheels and sticks
Officially licensed third-party gamepads work with supported PS4 games, but PlayStation does not guarantee every model or every title. PlayStation also identifies officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks as compatible with PS5 games and supported PS4 games. Check the peripheral maker’s compatibility statement for the exact model and the game’s generation before you rely on it for competitive play.
Headsets
Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets can be used on PS5. Third-party headsets that connect through USB or the controller’s audio jack are also supported. Their headset companion app is not compatible with PS5, so features configured only through that app may be unavailable.
Using PS VR on a new PS5
Original PS VR continues to work, but it needs the complete PS4-era camera chain:
- PS VR headset and its processor/cable set.
- A PS4 PlayStation Camera, model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2.
- A PlayStation Camera adaptor for connecting that camera to PS5.
PlayStation’s support guidance says the Camera adaptor is available at no purchase cost. The PS5 HD Camera does not replace the PS4 camera for PS VR. Individual games may also require PlayStation Move controllers or support the PS VR Aim controller. PlayStation recommends DUALSHOCK 4 for the best PS VR experience, so a DualSense-only setup is not a universal substitute.

Why the exact PS5 model matters for covers, stands and drives
Find the CFI model group first
Look for the CFI model number on the console packaging, underside or system information screen. Accessories are commonly grouped around the original CFI-1000 family, the CFI-2000 slim family and PS5 Pro. Similar-looking shells are not proof of interchangeability.
PS5 Pro limitations
PlayStation’s PS5 Pro compatibility table lists the PS5 Pro vertical stand, horizontal stand feet and a disc drive with its matching cover as compatible options. It lists PS5 covers made for the CFI-1000 or CFI-2000 slim groups, and the standard PS5 console base, as not compatible with PS5 Pro.
Detachable disc drive
The removable drive is intended for PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 slim consoles and PS5 Pro. During setup, the console needs an internet connection to pair the drive. Do not assume a drive from another model will fit, even if the external dimensions look similar; verify the current product instructions for your CFI group.

Vertical stands and feet
PlayStation’s accessory listing identifies its vertical-stand compatibility by model group, including CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 slim consoles. PS5 Pro uses the stand and feet specified for Pro. If a stand is not explicitly listed for your model, leave the console horizontal on a stable surface rather than forcing an incorrect mount.

Moving games with USB extended storage
A USB drive used as PS5 extended storage must meet PlayStation’s stated requirements: SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or faster, with capacity from 250 GB through 8 TB. PlayStation warns that it cannot guarantee every device will work, even when a drive appears to meet those figures.
| Game type | Can it be stored on USB extended storage? | Can it run directly from USB? |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 games | Yes | Yes |
| PS5 games | Yes, for archiving or moving | No; copy the game back to console storage before playing |
A drive previously formatted as extended storage on a PS4 or another PS5 can be connected to the new PS5 without reformatting. Use the console’s Storage settings to move titles, and safely eject the drive before disconnecting it. If the drive is not recognized, reconnect it directly to the console rather than through an unpowered hub, then check its capacity, USB speed rating and cable.
A safe migration procedure
- Record the model. Write down the new console’s CFI group and whether it has an internal disc drive.
- Inventory discs. Separate PS5 and PS4 discs from digital purchases. A disc cannot be used on a Digital Edition without the correct add-on drive.
- Check each important game. Read the PlayStation Store compatibility label and title support notes, especially for older or accessory-dependent games.
- Update both consoles. Install the latest system software and game patches before starting a transfer.
- Transfer accounts and data. Sign in to the same PlayStation account, then use the PS5 data-transfer option over Wi-Fi or a wired network.
- Reconnect USB storage. Attach a compatible extended-storage drive and move PS4 titles directly playable from it; copy PS5 titles back to internal storage when needed.
- Pair controllers correctly. Use DualSense for PS5 games. Keep DUALSHOCK 4 for PS4 versions and compatible PS VR titles.
- Test specialist equipment. For PS VR, connect the PS4 Camera and adaptor before opening the game. For wheels, sticks and headsets, test the exact title you intend to play.
- Buy physical accessories last. Confirm the CFI compatibility table before ordering covers, bases, stands or a detachable drive.
Common problems and fixes
“The game is locked” after moving consoles
Confirm that you signed in with the purchasing account and that the console is activated for that account. For a disc game, insert the original disc. A transferred installation without its digital license or disc will not launch.

A PS4 game will not start
Check the Store compatibility label and install all available patches. If PlayStation marks the title PS4-only, or documents missing functions and errors, the behavior is a compatibility limitation rather than a controller fault.

DUALSHOCK 4 does not control a PS5 game
This is expected. Start the game’s PS4 version if one is available, or connect a DualSense for the PS5 version.
PS VR cannot see the player
Use the PS4 Camera model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2 with the Camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with original PS VR. Recheck camera placement, adaptor connection and the game’s Move or Aim-controller requirement.
The accessory fits but is listed as incompatible
Compare the CFI number, not just the console’s name or appearance. CFI-1000, CFI-2000 slim and PS5 Pro parts can have different mounting points, covers or drive interfaces. Replace the part with one explicitly listed for that model group.
PS5 games appear on USB but will not launch
That is normal. USB extended storage is an archive for PS5 games; move the title to the console’s internal storage before playing. PS4 games are the exception and can run directly from the USB drive.
What to check before buying a used accessory
- Generation: PS5, PS4, PS VR or a mixed-generation peripheral.
- Game requirement: whether the title is running as PS5 or PS4 software.
- Disc hardware: built-in drive, original Digital Edition or supported detachable drive.
- CFI group: CFI-1000, CFI-2000 slim or PS5 Pro.
- Connection type: USB, controller audio jack, wireless receiver or camera adaptor.
- Software support: whether a companion app or PS4-only feature is required.
- Storage role: playable directly from USB or required to return to internal storage.
Using those checks prevents the most expensive mistakes: buying PS4 discs for a Digital Edition, expecting DUALSHOCK 4 to run a PS5 game, connecting the PS5 HD Camera to original PS VR, or ordering a cover or stand for the wrong CFI family.
