If you are seeing those artifacts now, identify which existing DLSS feature is active and troubleshoot it systematically instead of assuming the problem comes from DLSS 5.
The update is announced for GeForce RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW, and RTX Spark. NVIDIA also says it will update the game’s other DLSS technologies, meaning the post-update behavior may involve Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, or the new Neural Rendering feature. The steps below are therefore a controlled diagnostic process, not a guaranteed Hogwarts Legacy patch workaround.

What you can and cannot fix today
The date matters. NVIDIA’s October 13, 2026 announcement puts the Hogwarts Legacy DLSS 5 update on November 5, 2026. Until that game update is installed, a setting labelled DLSS, a preview build, or an unrelated DLSS upgrade cannot be treated as DLSS 5. Check the version actually installed on your system before changing settings or judging the result.

Platforms named for the announced update
- GeForce RTX 50 Series for local PC rendering.
- GeForce NOW.
- RTX Spark.
These are eligibility platforms announced by NVIDIA, not a promise that purchasing hardware or using a particular service will remove an artifact. The announcement does not provide a measured image-quality comparison or a success rate for any setting combination.
DLSS 5 is not the same thing as every other DLSS option
The name can make troubleshooting confusing because several different technologies appear under the DLSS umbrella. NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 Neural Rendering as a final-stage process. It takes the engine’s rendered frame, geometry, textures, and lighting buffers as its foundation, then adds lighting and material detail. The engine frame still defines what must remain, while the artist directs what may change.

That is different from the following features:

NVIDIA says the Hogwarts Legacy update will also upgrade the game’s other DLSS technologies to their newest versions. Consequently, after November 5, you should still record which individual feature is enabled before assigning a symptom to DLSS 5.
Prepare a reproducible test before changing settings
Randomly switching several options makes it impossible to know which change affected the image. Establish a small, repeatable test first.

- Choose one scene where the defect is easy to see. Use the same save, location, weather, time of day, and camera angle for every comparison.
- Record whether the problem appears in a still image, only during camera movement, or during character movement. Capture both a stationary frame and a short camera pan.
- Write down the GPU or streaming platform, graphics driver version, Hogwarts Legacy version, output resolution, upscaling mode, Frame Generation state, Ray Reconstruction state, and ray-tracing state.
- Do not alter more than one relevant feature between two runs. Keep resolution and the rest of the graphics options unchanged while testing one toggle.
- Compare the same object at the same distance. A different camera position can make ordinary temporal changes look like a setting improvement or regression.
This record separates a temporal instability from a static rendering problem and gives useful information if you later report the behavior to the game or graphics-driver team.
Step-by-step diagnostic sequence
1. Confirm the game update and feature labels
Check the Hogwarts Legacy version shown by your launcher or platform and install any available game update. Also check the current NVIDIA software or cloud-game version shown for your platform. Do not infer that DLSS 5 is active merely because a DLSS option exists.
If the calendar date is before November 5, 2026, the announced Hogwarts Legacy integration has not reached its stated release date. If the date is on or after November 5, verify that the game itself has downloaded the update before testing. A driver update alone is not evidence that the game has received DLSS 5.
2. Establish a feature-off baseline
Run the chosen scene with the relevant DLSS option disabled, keeping the output resolution and ray-tracing state documented. This is not intended as a permanent recommendation; it is a control image. If the artifact remains unchanged, the tested DLSS feature is less likely to be the immediate trigger. If it disappears, continue isolating the individual components.
3. Test Super Resolution by itself
Enable Super Resolution while leaving Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and ray tracing in the same state as the baseline. Repeat the identical camera movement and compare a still frame with motion. Then disable Super Resolution again and confirm that the comparison is repeatable.

A change that appears only when Super Resolution is enabled points to the reconstruction path as a suspect, but it does not prove a single internal cause. Note whether the symptom is a trailing image behind a character, crawling fine texture, or instability on a thin edge; those observations are more useful than a general statement that the picture looks wrong.

4. Test Frame Generation separately
Return to the baseline, then change only Frame Generation. Use the same camera pan and character movement. If a defect appears exclusively in generated motion, disabling Frame Generation is a valid diagnostic result. It is not proof that Frame Generation is responsible for every similar artifact, nor is it an official Hogwarts Legacy-specific fix.
Compare input-rendered motion and generated motion in the same scene. Keep a note of whether the problem is visible in a paused screenshot; a defect that vanishes when the image is paused may be tied to temporal presentation rather than a static texture or model.
5. Test Ray Reconstruction and ray tracing
Return to the same baseline and change only Ray Reconstruction if the option is available in your configuration. Perform a second comparison with ray tracing disabled while all other tested options remain fixed. This distinguishes a ray-traced reflection or highlight problem from a broader temporal artifact.
In a July 2026 NVIDIA Developer Forum response, a participant explained that Ray Reconstruction can stabilize strobing caused by aliased specular highlights and alleviate some ghosting that Super Resolution alone cannot manage. That statement is a general technical observation, not a Hogwarts Legacy-specific guarantee and not evidence that Ray Reconstruction will improve every scene.

6. Test combinations only after single-feature tests
Once each feature has been tested independently, evaluate the combination that matches your normal settings. For example, compare Super Resolution plus Frame Generation with Super Resolution alone, then add Ray Reconstruction if ray-traced effects are enabled. Change one item per comparison and keep the same scene and camera path.
Do not assign a numerical ranking to the modes. The available evidence contains no measured Hogwarts Legacy DLSS 5 comparison across these settings, so a result that looks better in one room or at one camera angle cannot be generalized to the entire game.

Character trails or “ghosts” behind moving objects
Start with a still-versus-motion comparison. If the trail is absent in a still frame and appears as a character or object moves, test Super Resolution and Frame Generation independently. Keep Ray Reconstruction in the same state for both tests unless the scene also contains ray-traced lighting that is visibly unstable.
A TechRadar reviewer testing DLSS 4.5 reported noticeable artifacts and ghosting around characters in Hogwarts Legacy and said that changing settings did not resolve the issue in that test. This is one reviewer’s account of an earlier DLSS configuration. It shows that related symptoms have been reported, but it does not establish the cause and cannot predict how the November 5 DLSS 5 update will behave.
Shimmering textures, foliage, or fine geometry
Capture a still frame and a slow camera pan aimed at the same surface. Note whether the shimmer is limited to distant detail or remains visible when the camera is stationary. Test Super Resolution first because it reconstructs the image from temporal information, then test Frame Generation separately. Avoid changing resolution, sharpening, or several quality presets at once; otherwise you cannot identify which feature changed the pattern.

Flickering reflections and bright highlights
Check whether the flicker follows a ray-traced reflection, polished surface, or bright specular highlight. If it does, compare Ray Reconstruction on and off, then compare ray tracing on and off. The NVIDIA Developer Forum observation about stabilizing aliased specular highlights applies to this type of symptom, but it remains a general explanation rather than a promised game fix.
Flicker visible even in a paused image
If a paused image still contains unstable pixels or a static surface is visibly wrong, document that separately from motion-only ghosting. Repeat the test with the suspected DLSS feature disabled and verify the result in the same scene. A persistent static defect may not be explained by Frame Generation, because that feature changes the sequence of displayed frames rather than the underlying scene assets.
Interpreting your test results

These interpretations describe what your controlled comparison can show. They do not turn a visual correlation into an official diagnosis from NVIDIA or the game developer.
Do not swap experimental model DLLs as a routine fix
Online discussions may suggest replacing a DLSS model DLL with an experimental research build. NVIDIA’s DLSS Research information warns that research models are not fully validated and may contain regressions. A replacement can therefore introduce new image defects, instability, or incompatibility while making the original problem harder to reproduce.
For normal consumer troubleshooting, keep the installed game and driver components intact. If you have already replaced a model file, restore the files through the platform’s repair or verification function, then repeat the baseline test with the standard installation before drawing conclusions.
What to record in a useful bug report
A report that says only “DLSS flickers” leaves out the information needed to reproduce the issue. Include:
- Local GPU model or the fact that the game is running through GeForce NOW or another supported platform.
- Graphics-driver version and Hogwarts Legacy version.
- Whether the announced November 5, 2026 update is installed.
- Output resolution and the exact states of Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and ray tracing.
- The scene, camera direction, and movement that trigger the artifact.
- Whether it appears in a still image, only during motion, or in both.
- A short capture showing the baseline and the changed setting under the same camera movement.
Label each capture with the setting change. A side-by-side clip of the same scene is more informative than separate screenshots from different locations.

A practical decision checklist
- Before November 5, 2026: treat the problem as an existing DLSS, ray-tracing, driver, or game-rendering issue; DLSS 5 is not yet available in the announced Hogwarts Legacy update.
- On or after the release date: verify that the Hogwarts Legacy game update is installed and identify the exact DLSS feature labels shown in the options menu.
- For ghosting: compare a still frame and camera motion, then test Super Resolution and Frame Generation separately.
- For texture shimmer: repeat the same slow camera pan and isolate Super Resolution before testing combinations.
- For reflection or highlight flicker: test Ray Reconstruction and ray tracing as separate diagnostic changes.
- For any result that cannot be repeated: stop changing settings and capture the full configuration before reporting it.
- For proposed DLL replacements: avoid experimental research models unless you are intentionally testing unsupported software and can restore the original installation.
The useful outcome of this process is not a universal preset. It is a clear determination of which feature, scene, and type of motion are associated with the artifact on your system, while keeping the announced DLSS 5 timing and the limits of current evidence explicit.
