Yes—you can sign in to the same Microsoft account on two or more devices and use Minecraft where that account has the appropriate entitlement. That is mainly useful for moving from one device to another, not for two people playing simultaneously under one identity.

That is mainly useful for moving from one device to another. It is not a reliable way for two people to play Minecraft simultaneously under one Microsoft identity. For two players on two devices, use a separate Microsoft account for each player.

What the same Microsoft account lets you do
Your Microsoft account connects your Minecraft identity across supported devices. Depending on the platform and edition, it can carry your Xbox gamertag, Minecraft purchases, Marketplace content, Realms access, and supported cross-platform social features. Minecraft describes the Microsoft account as the account used to access purchases, Realms, and other Minecraft content across Minecraft devices.

That does not mean one purchase automatically licenses every console, phone, tablet, and computer. Minecraft ownership is affected by the platform store, edition, and account used to buy the game.
Can two devices use the same account at the same time?
Microsoft Community support guidance says that two devices cannot use the same Minecraft account for simultaneous play. If two people want to play together—such as one person on an Xbox and another on a Nintendo Switch—each person should use a different Microsoft account and gamertag. This guidance comes from a Microsoft Community moderator rather than a standalone Minecraft licensing page, so it is best understood as practical account-use guidance. In practice, separate accounts are the correct setup for two-player multiplayer.
Signing both devices into one account can also create practical problems: both players share one identity, friends may see the wrong player online, invitations can be confusing, and the account may be signed out or disconnected when the other device starts a session.
The correct setup for two people playing together
- Create or use one Microsoft account per player. Each account should have its own gamertag and Minecraft player identity.
- Use compatible editions. Bedrock players can normally play with other Bedrock players through supported worlds, Realms, and servers. Java players play with Java players. Java and Bedrock are not automatically compatible for ordinary multiplayer.
- Make sure each player has access to the game on the relevant platform. A PC purchase is not automatically a Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Android, or iOS purchase.
- Add the players as friends where necessary. On Bedrock, players can use the in-game Microsoft/Xbox friends system to find and invite one another.
- Enable online multiplayer permissions. Child accounts may need Microsoft/Xbox family settings that allow multiplayer, cross-network play, adding friends, and communication.
- Check console online requirements. Depending on the console and region, online multiplayer may require Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, or PlayStation Plus. These subscriptions provide online-platform access; they do not automatically grant ownership of Minecraft.
Minecraft’s official multiplayer requirements are the best place to check the current platform and account conditions before troubleshooting a connection.

Which account and edition does each device require?
| Device or platform | Typical Minecraft edition | Accounts involved |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Java and/or Bedrock | Microsoft account; the PC entitlement must belong to that account |
| macOS or Linux PC | Java | Microsoft account; use the account that owns the PC game |
| Xbox | Bedrock | Xbox/platform account plus linked Microsoft account |
| PlayStation | Bedrock | PlayStation account plus linked Microsoft account |
| Nintendo Switch | Bedrock | Nintendo account plus linked Microsoft account |
| Android or iPhone/iPad | Bedrock | Relevant mobile-store account plus Microsoft account |
This is a simplified guide rather than a statement that every platform has identical purchase rules. See Minecraft’s current accounts-required documentation for the platform-specific account combination.
Does a PC purchase work on a second PC?
Generally, yes. Minecraft’s PC documentation says that the PC product provides the Java and Bedrock bundle for Windows, macOS, or Linux, with Windows supporting either edition and Java supporting macOS and Linux. On the second computer, install the Minecraft Launcher and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the purchase.
For a second Windows, macOS, or Linux computer, the relevant product is Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. A PC entitlement should not be treated as a license for a console or mobile store. If you are buying for another player, use the Microsoft account intended to own and play the game rather than accidentally purchasing on a parent’s or another family member’s account.
Does a PC purchase work on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, or mobile?
Not automatically. On Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Android, and iOS, Minecraft is obtained through the applicable platform or mobile store. You can link the Microsoft account for cross-play, your gamertag, Marketplace purchases, Realms, and social features, but linking the account does not convert a PC purchase into a platform-store purchase.

- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.

For example, if you own Minecraft Java and Bedrock for PC and want to play on a Switch, you should expect to need the Switch version as well. The same principle applies when moving between PC and mobile or between PC and a console. For readers specifically setting up a second console, the official Minecraft Nintendo Switch listing is the appropriate place to verify the current product and platform requirements.
Will your worlds and progress appear on both devices?
Not necessarily. Signing in with the same Microsoft account does not guarantee that every local world is automatically synchronized across every platform.
- Bedrock local worlds: Transfer options depend on the devices involved. Minecraft documents cloud transfer, physical storage, and Realms as possible methods, depending on the platform.
- Java worlds: Worlds are stored locally on the computer. Back up the world, then copy its world folder into the new computer’s Minecraft
savesdirectory using Minecraft’s official Java world-transfer instructions. - Realms: A Realm can provide a shared online world that is accessible from supported devices, but it is a separate service. Players still need compatible editions, Microsoft-account sign-in, and the required invitation or membership access. A Realm does not make one account suitable for two simultaneous players.
Back up important worlds before moving them. Do not assume that achievements, local saves, installed add-ons, or every piece of Marketplace content will behave identically after changing platforms.
Common situations
One person is replacing an old PC
Sign in to the new PC with the same Microsoft account that owns Minecraft, install the Launcher, and select the appropriate edition. Then restore or copy local worlds separately. The account can identify the purchase, but it does not by itself move Java save files between computers.

One person wants to play on a PC and a phone
Use the same Microsoft account if you want the same Minecraft identity, but confirm that the relevant mobile-store purchase is available on the phone. Mobile Minecraft uses Bedrock, while Java is not the mobile edition.
Two family members want to play on two devices
Use two Microsoft accounts, not one shared login. Confirm that both devices run the same compatible edition, that each player has the required platform access, and that family-safety settings permit multiplayer. If one device is a console, check whether its online subscription is required.
Two people share one console
Supported Bedrock platforms may offer local split-screen, which is different from signing the same Microsoft account into two separate devices. Whether split-screen, online play, and an online subscription are available depends on the platform and game setup. Give each player a distinct account when the platform supports it so identities and multiplayer permissions remain separate.

What about Microsoft family sharing?
Microsoft Store family sharing can allow multiple family accounts to access some Minecraft games on PC. However, Minecraft Help specifically notes that Java Edition cannot be family-shared through the Microsoft Store because Java is not part of that store entitlement. A child who wants to play Java may therefore need a separate purchase or may need to use the owning account, subject to the applicable account rules.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Family sharing should not be confused with simultaneous use of one Microsoft account. Even where a platform’s family-sharing feature applies, separate players should use separate Microsoft accounts.
Quick decision guide
| Your goal | Recommended setup |
|---|---|
| Move Minecraft from one PC to another | Use the same Microsoft account and transfer local worlds separately. |
| Use one player identity on PC and another supported device | Use the same Microsoft account, but verify the second platform’s purchase and edition. |
| Let two people play together on two devices | Use one Microsoft account per player, compatible editions, and any required console subscription. |
| Share one world across supported devices | Use compatible Bedrock or Java multiplayer methods; consider Realms for an online shared world. |
| Share a PC game with a child | Check Microsoft family-sharing eligibility, remembering that Java has the stated limitation. |
Bottom line
You can use the same Microsoft account for Minecraft on multiple devices when the account and platform have the necessary entitlement. That works well when one person is switching devices. It is not the right arrangement for two people playing at the same time. For that, create separate Microsoft accounts, use compatible editions, obtain any platform-specific copies or subscriptions, and configure child-account multiplayer permissions as needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Minecraft on a second device with the same Microsoft account?
Yes, if the account owns or has access to the required Minecraft entitlement for each platform. A PC purchase does not automatically provide the console or mobile version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan two people play Minecraft at the same time using one Microsoft account?
No—not as a practical simultaneous multiplayer setup. Microsoft Community support guidance says two devices cannot play at the same time under one Minecraft account. Use a separate Microsoft account for each player.
Will my Minecraft worlds sync automatically between devices?
Not automatically. Local worlds may need to be transferred, while Java worlds are stored locally. Realms can provide shared-world access on supported devices, but it does not remove the need for separate player accounts.
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
Usually, both players need Bedrock for ordinary cross-platform Bedrock multiplayer, or both need Java for Java multiplayer. Java and Bedrock are not automatically compatible with one another.
The Bottom Line
Use one Microsoft account across devices for one player switching devices. Use separate Microsoft accounts for two people playing simultaneously. Also check platform-specific ownership, Java-versus-Bedrock compatibility, world-transfer options, console subscriptions, and family-safety settings.
