1. AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT: the best default pick
The Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card is the most sensible starting point for a Ryzen 7 9700X gaming build when price-to-performance matters. AMD specifies 16GB of GDDR6 memory, 64 ray accelerators, 128 AI accelerators and a 304W typical board power. AMD’s minimum recommended power supply is 750W.
Its strongest use case is high-refresh 1440p gaming, especially in titles where conventional rasterized rendering matters more than ray tracing. It is also a practical 4K card if you are willing to use sensible presets or upscaling in the most demanding games.
Independent results show why it should not be dismissed as merely a slower version of the RTX 5070 Ti. In TechSpot’s 22-game comparison, the RX 9070 XT led in several rasterized titles, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Final Fantasy XVI, Ghost of Tsushima and Forza Horizon 6. Nvidia’s competing card led more clearly in some ray-traced workloads.
Tom’s Hardware’s cited testing table measured the RX 9070 XT at averages of 116.7 FPS at 1080p, 85.3 FPS at 1440p and 47.4 FPS at 4K. Those figures are test-suite averages, not guarantees for every game. The same update listed a median street price of $759 compared with a $599 MSRP, illustrating why the exact price at the time of purchase matters.
Buy it when: you mainly play rasterized games, want high-refresh 1440p, want a 16GB card for VR or multi-monitor use, or the RX 9070 XT is substantially cheaper than the RTX 5070 Ti.
2. Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti: the premium feature and ray-tracing choice
The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti graphics card is the better choice when the build is centered on ray tracing, path tracing, DLSS, Nvidia’s software ecosystem or CUDA-oriented creative and compute workloads.
Nvidia specifies 16GB of GDDR7 memory, 8,960 CUDA cores, fourth-generation ray-tracing cores and fifth-generation Tensor cores. In TechSpot’s comparison, it was approximately 5% faster than the RX 9070 XT on average using native rendering, although the difference varied considerably by game and rendering mode. Its advantage grew in several ray-traced tests, including Cyberpunk 2077.
Tom’s Hardware recorded averages of 123.7 FPS at 1080p, 92.0 FPS at 1440p and 52.8 FPS at 4K in its test suite. However, the cited median street price was $1,099 against a $749 MSRP. At that price, the RTX 5070 Ti’s performance advantage does not automatically justify the additional cost.
Buy it when: you use ray tracing or path tracing frequently, specifically want DLSS, run CUDA-dependent software, play games that favor Nvidia hardware, or find the card close enough in price to the RX 9070 XT that the feature advantage is worth paying for.
Do not buy it on the assumption that it is universally faster. The Radeon can win in individual rasterized games, and the real-world gap depends on the game, resolution, settings, upscaling and whether ray tracing is enabled.

3. AMD Radeon RX 9070: the sensible 1440p step down
The Radeon RX 9070 graphics card makes sense when your target is 1440p rather than maximum 4K performance and the RX 9070 XT is priced too aggressively.
In the cited Tom’s Hardware hierarchy, the RX 9070 averaged 103.4 FPS at 1080p, 74.8 FPS at 1440p and 41.1 FPS at 4K. Its median street price was listed as $634 against a $549 MSRP. That makes it a lower-cost alternative, but only if its actual price remains clearly below the XT model.
For a 1440p system paired with the Ryzen 7 9700X, the RX 9070 is not a poor match. It simply offers less headroom for high-refresh gaming and demanding 4K settings than the RX 9070 XT.
4. Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070: the lower-tier DLSS option
The GeForce RTX 5070 graphics card is the Nvidia alternative for buyers who want DLSS and Nvidia’s ray-tracing features without moving to the RTX 5070 Ti.
Its most important specification difference is memory: Nvidia lists 12GB of GDDR7, compared with 16GB on the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT. That is adequate for many 1440p workloads, but the smaller capacity gives the higher-tier 16GB cards more breathing room for demanding textures, VR, multi-monitor gaming and future titles.

It is a reasonable 1440p choice when Nvidia features are important and the price difference to the RTX 5070 Ti is large.
Choose by resolution and workload
1080p esports and very high refresh rates
The Ryzen 7 9700X can pair with all four cards, but buying the most powerful GPU does not guarantee proportionally higher frame rates. Competitive games at low settings often become CPU-limited, particularly when the system is trying to produce hundreds of frames per second.
Choose the RX 9070 or RTX 5070 if the lower price is more useful elsewhere in the build. Choose the RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti if you also play visually demanding games, use a high-resolution display, or want more headroom.
1440p high refresh
The RX 9070 XT is the default value recommendation. It has enough performance for a strong 1440p experience and 16GB of memory. The RTX 5070 Ti is preferable when ray tracing, DLSS or Nvidia-specific software is a central requirement.

4K gaming
The RX 9070 XT is attractive for rasterized 4K gaming, but the most demanding games may require upscaling, reduced ray-tracing settings or a mixture of high and ultra presets. The RTX 5070 Ti is the safer choice for ray tracing and path tracing, although it too may need upscaling in demanding releases.

VR and multi-monitor gaming
Prefer a 16GB card when your budget allows: that means the RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti among these recommendations. VR performance depends on the headset resolution, application, render scale and graphics settings, so VR support alone is not enough to declare one card universally superior. Check the specific application’s requirements before buying.
How much does the Ryzen 7 9700X limit these GPUs?
The Ryzen 7 9700X is an 8-core/16-thread Zen 5 desktop processor with a maximum boost clock of 5.5GHz, 65W TDP, 40MB of combined cache, AM5 compatibility, DDR5 support and PCIe 5.0 support according to AMD’s published specifications.
That is a strong platform for the recommended GPUs. At 1440p and 4K, the graphics card normally becomes the main limit in visually demanding games. At 1080p, low settings and very high refresh rates, the CPU may limit performance first. This is not a compatibility problem; it is the expected result of changing the resolution, settings and frame-rate target.

Motherboard and platform
The Ryzen 7 9700X uses AMD’s AM5 platform, which requires an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory. AMD’s current AM5 chipset documentation covers Ryzen 9000 processors, DDR5, AMD EXPO memory profiles and PCIe 5.0 connectivity on chipsets such as B850 and X870.
A GPU does not need to match the CPU’s brand. Both an AMD Radeon card and an Nvidia GeForce card can run in the same AM5 system. If you are building from scratch, an AM5 B850 or X870 motherboard is an adjacent option, not a requirement to buy a particular GPU. Verify BIOS support, expansion-slot layout, M.2 placement and the board’s rear I/O before choosing a model.
Power supply
For the RX 9070 XT, AMD lists a 750W minimum PSU recommendation and two 8-pin power connectors in its quick-reference material. A quality 750W unit is a practical baseline for a conventional Ryzen 7 9700X system with one RX 9070 XT.
Consider a higher-capacity unit if you are using a heavily overclocked graphics card, an overclocked processor, several drives, unusual USB loads or planning a major future upgrade. The exact board-partner card may use a different connector arrangement or have a higher power limit, so check its product page rather than relying only on the GPU family name.
Use the PSU’s native cables or connections explicitly approved by the PSU and GPU manufacturers. Do not assume that an improvised adapter is safe merely because it physically fits. A quality 750W gaming PC PSU should be selected for its output, protections, connector availability and build quality—not just its wattage label.
Case clearance and card design
Board-partner cards can differ substantially in length, height, thickness, cooler design, power connectors and factory power limits. Before ordering, compare the exact model’s dimensions with the case’s maximum GPU clearance, account for front radiators or drive cages, and leave room around the power connector for a safe cable bend.

A support bracket can be useful for a large card, but it does not solve an incompatible case or an unsuitable PSU. Treat the specific card model—not only “RX 9070 XT” or “RTX 5070 Ti”—as the compatibility target.

GPU prices change quickly, so the ranking should be treated as a price-relative decision rather than a permanent league table. The cited Tom’s Hardware updates from 2026 reported elevated pricing across several recommended cards, and a later August 2026 report described further increases for some RTX 50-series models.
- Buy the RX 9070 XT when it is substantially cheaper than the RTX 5070 Ti and your games are mainly rasterized.
- Pay extra for the RTX 5070 Ti when ray tracing, DLSS, CUDA, creator software or a known Nvidia-favored game is important.
- Consider the RX 9070 or RTX 5070 when your target is 1440p and the higher-tier cards are priced far above their normal value.
- Compare the complete card model for cooler quality, dimensions, warranty, connectors and current retailer price.
Do not compare MSRP alone. A card’s launch price may be irrelevant if local availability, retailer pricing or board-partner premiums have changed. Conversely, a sale can make the normally secondary option the better purchase for your build.
Final recommendation
For a general-purpose Ryzen 7 9700X gaming PC, start with the RX 9070 XT. It provides the best balance of 1440p performance, 4K capability, 16GB of VRAM and purchase price when it is below the RTX 5070 Ti.
Choose the RTX 5070 Ti if ray tracing, path tracing, DLSS or Nvidia software is worth the premium. Choose the RX 9070 or RTX 5070 for a less expensive 1440p-focused build, with the RTX 5070’s 12GB memory kept in mind.
