Yes, but only in a limited way. An Xbox console can join a Valheim dedicated server when that server has crossplay enabled. It cannot run or host a dedicated server itself, and it cannot install the PC BepInEx loader used by many client-side mods. For a mixed Xbox-and-PC group, the practical option is a PC-operated or hosted dedicated server using the -crossplay argument and only mods whose authors explicitly document server-side or Xbox compatibility.

There is no universal “Xbox mod” setting. Compatibility depends on what each mod changes, how the crossplay backend handles it, the game version, and whether every connecting client needs the mod locally. Iron Gate does not officially support mods, so any modded setup can stop working after a Valheim update.

Valheim has two separate questions that are often combined:
- Can an Xbox player connect to a server? Yes, when the dedicated server and the Xbox client use crossplay.
- Can an Xbox console create and operate that dedicated server? No. Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ says, “You can’t set up a dedicated server on an Xbox.”
Therefore, an “Xbox Valheim server” normally means a server operated on a PC or by a hosting provider that Xbox players can join. The Xbox is a client in this arrangement, not the machine running the world.

How crossplay enables Xbox participation
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server documentation identifies the -crossplay launch argument as the switch that runs a server through the PlayFab backend and lets users from any platform join. Iron Gate’s FAQ adds that an Xbox can join a dedicated server only when crossplay is enabled on both sides of the connection.
On a mixed-platform world, the operator should start the dedicated server with -crossplay, leave the server running on a PC or hosted system, and have Xbox players join through Valheim’s normal server-joining flow. The console does not need to install the PC server software. It does need a game version that can connect to the current server version.
Why most PC Valheim mods do not work on Xbox
Many Valheim mods are distributed for the BepInEx mod loader. BepInEx is installed on a PC client and loads code into the PC game process. Xbox consoles cannot install or run that loader, so an Xbox player cannot use a mod that requires BepInEx on the player’s own machine.

This creates an important distinction:
- Client-side mod: Code, interface files, models, textures, or other assets must be present on each player’s device. An Xbox player generally cannot install this PC mod stack.
- Server-side mod: The dedicated server applies the logic and clients connect without installing the same package. This can be viable for Xbox players, but only when the particular mod and crossplay backend support that arrangement.
- Hybrid mod: The server handles part of the feature, while clients need a companion mod, custom interface, or asset pack. Treat this as incompatible with Xbox unless the author specifically confirms console support.
A mod being described as “server-side” is not, by itself, a guarantee. A server-side feature that sends unsupported assets, changes the client interface, or expects a matching client plug-in can still prevent an Xbox player from joining or playing normally.
Mod compatibility is individual, not universal
Community server tooling supports BepInEx and ValheimPlus in some configurations, while warning that some mods may work poorly or not at all when crossplay is enabled. That warning is the realistic boundary: crossplay and mods are separate features, and their intersection must be checked mod by mod.
| Mod or feature characteristic | Likely result for an Xbox player | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Pure server rules or administration logic | May work without an Xbox installation | The mod’s documentation must explicitly support dedicated servers and crossplay clients. |
| PC BepInEx plug-in required on every client | Xbox player cannot use it | Whether a client plug-in is mandatory, optional, or replaced by server logic. |
| Custom HUD, menus, keybinds, or visual assets | Often incompatible or feature-limited | Whether console clients receive a supported interface and assets. |
| World-generation or content changes | May allow connection, but can cause errors or missing content | Crossplay support, save compatibility, and the required game version. |
| Mod with no current crossplay statement | Unknown; do not assume it works | Author documentation, release date, supported Valheim version, and reports for the current build. |
There is no authoritative statistic that converts these categories into a percentage of working mods. “Xbox-compatible” should be treated as a claim tied to a specific mod release and Valheim version, not as a property of Valheim modding in general.

Recommended setup for a mixed Xbox-and-PC group
1. Decide whether the group really needs mods
If every player is on Steam or another PC installation that supports the same mod loader, the group has the widest compatibility because each client can use an identical mod profile. If even one regular player is on Xbox, design the server around the console player’s limitations first.
2. Operate the dedicated server somewhere other than Xbox
Use a Windows or Linux PC that can stay online, or a managed Valheim server that exposes dedicated-server settings. The Xbox console cannot be the dedicated-server host. The operator is responsible for the server files, save files, launch arguments, and mod installation.
3. Enable the crossplay backend
Add -crossplay to the dedicated-server launch configuration. This selects the PlayFab-backed crossplay route described by Iron Gate and is required for Xbox participation. Without it, a PC server may be reachable by PC players while remaining unavailable to Xbox clients.

4. Confirm the unmodified connection first
Before adding any plug-in, have an Xbox player join the otherwise vanilla crossplay server. This separates networking and account problems from mod problems. Record the server’s working game version and keep the initial world save untouched.
5. Select one explicitly compatible mod
Read the mod’s own documentation for four details: whether it is server-side, whether Xbox or Microsoft Store clients are supported, which Valheim version it targets, and whether crossplay is listed as supported. If the documentation requires BepInEx on every client, exclude that mod from a mixed Xbox world.
6. Add only one mod at a time
Stop the server, back up the world and configuration, install the mod, restart, and test with an Xbox player and a PC player. A one-at-a-time process identifies the offending change if the server disappears, rejects a connection, or loads a broken world.

7. Re-test after every Valheim update
Iron Gate states that it does not guarantee mod compatibility with newer game versions. A previously working mod can fail after an update even when the server arguments and world have not changed. Delay updates when the world is important, or keep a rollback copy and a known-good mod set.

| Comparison point | Vanilla crossplay server | Modded crossplay server |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox client requirements | Valheim on Xbox and a server reachable through crossplay. | The same requirements, plus verification that every installed mod supports Xbox clients without an unsupported client loader. |
| Client-side installation | None beyond the game. | Xbox cannot install PC BepInEx mods; PC players may need matching files for client-dependent features. |
| Crossplay backend | Run the dedicated server with -crossplay. |
Still requires -crossplay; some mods may fail when that backend is active. |
| Update resilience | Usually follows the game’s supported client and server versions. | Depends on each mod being updated; Iron Gate provides no official compatibility guarantee. |
| Backup and rollback | Good practice for any world. | Essential because a mod or update can alter behavior or make a save fail to load. |
| Who operates the server | A PC or managed host; not an Xbox console. | The same, with additional responsibility for mod files, configuration, testing, and recovery. |
Symptoms, likely causes, and fixes
The Xbox cannot find or join the server
- Check that the dedicated server is actually running with
-crossplay; a standard PC-only launch is not enough. - Confirm that the Xbox and server are on compatible Valheim versions.
- Test the same server without mods. If the vanilla connection works, add-ons are the likely cause.
The Xbox can see the server but is disconnected during loading
- Remove the newest mod and test again; a single incompatible plug-in can break a mixed-platform connection.
- Look for a hidden client requirement such as BepInEx, a custom HUD, or downloaded assets.
- Check the mod’s current documentation rather than relying on an older setup guide.
PC players work, but Xbox players cannot use a feature
This usually indicates a client-dependent mod. The server may be running the plug-in while the Xbox client lacks the code or interface required to display it. Replace it with a documented server-side alternative or run a separate PC-only world.
The world will not load after an update
Stop making changes to the original save. Restore the last known-good world and configuration backup, remove or update the incompatible mod, and test on a copy before allowing players back in. Because official support is absent, recovery depends on the server operator’s backups and the mod author’s release notes.
Backups and operating practices that prevent lost progress
- Keep a vanilla backup made before the first mod is installed.
- Make a dated copy of the world, configuration files, and launch arguments before each mod change and game update.
- Maintain a written list of mod names, versions, load order, and whether each is server-only or client-dependent.
- Use a staging copy of the world to test updates; do not use the only live save as a compatibility experiment.
- Tell Xbox players which features are unavailable to them instead of assuming that a visible PC feature will appear on console.
Choosing between a modded mixed world and separate worlds
Choose one crossplay world when
- Xbox players are essential to the group.
- The selected mods explicitly support server-side operation and Xbox or Microsoft Store clients.
- The operator is willing to test after updates and maintain backups.
Use a separate PC-only modded world when
- The desired mods require BepInEx on every client.
- The mods add custom interfaces, visual assets, or content that console clients cannot load.
- The group wants broad access to the PC mod ecosystem without crossplay limitations.
This split avoids forcing an Xbox player to troubleshoot a feature their console cannot install and preserves a stable crossplay world for everyone who needs it.
The official support limitation
Iron Gate’s mod policy says that, because it has no official mod support, creating and using mods is done at the player’s own risk and compatibility with newer game versions cannot be guaranteed. Iron Gate’s FAQ likewise states that Valheim has no official mod support. That policy applies whether the server is vanilla, crossplay-enabled, or operated through a community server image.

Accordingly, a server administrator should treat every mod as an independently maintained dependency. A working combination today is not a promise for the next game patch, and crossplay testing with an actual Xbox client is more reliable than assuming a PC-only test represents console behavior.
