Isle of Berk, also listed as Claws of Berk, is a Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 modpack running on Forge. Install the same pack release on every client and on the server; the current CurseForge files list release 3.2.6, including a separate 3.2.6 server archive uploaded October 6, 2026. This guide covers client installation, a dedicated server, playing with friends, update safety and the pack’s dragon-focused progression.

What Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk) adds to Minecraft

Isle of Berk is a How to Train Your Dragon-inspired pack created by kesselot. Its official descriptions combine rideable and tamable dragons with Viking weapons and armor, dungeons, unusual terrain generation, exploration and multiplayer. The intended experience is an exploration-survival world rather than a single boss rush: you establish a safe base, learn the generated landscape, find points of interest and gradually build confidence around increasingly large dragon encounters.

The project is published under both the Isle of Berk and Claws of Berk names. When downloading, use the project page’s current 1.18.2 Forge file rather than assuming that a similarly named community pack is the same project. CurseForge’s project snapshot records 1,276,302 downloads, while Modrinth’s snapshot records 413.1K. Those are separate platform counts from 2026 and must not be combined into one audience total.

Compatibility at a glance

Item What the project currently establishes What you should do
Minecraft edition Java Edition Use the Java launcher and a Java profile, not Bedrock Edition.
Minecraft version 1.18.2 Launch vanilla 1.18.2 once before installing the pack so the launcher creates the base profile.
Mod loader Forge Select the Forge-based pack profile supplied by the project.
Supported environments Client and server Install a client profile for each player and the matching dedicated server archive for a persistent world.
Current files listing ClawsOfBerk-[3.2.6] and ClawsOfBerk+Server-[3.2.6] Keep the release number identical on the server and every client.
File date October 6, 2026, for the listed 3.2.6 files Check the files page again immediately before installation; releases can change.
Hosting permission The project license permits private or public servers You may host for friends or operate a public server, subject to your own network, hardware and moderation arrangements.

The project does not publish a universal RAM requirement, a guaranteed player limit or a performance benchmark. Hardware, view distance, world activity and the number of connected players determine the practical limit, so treat any host’s advertised specification as a separate claim rather than an official pack requirement.

Install the client profile

Use either CurseForge or Modrinth to create the profile. The exact button names can change between launcher versions, but the required choices remain Java Edition 1.18.2, Forge and the current Claws of Berk release.

  1. Install Minecraft Java Edition. Sign in to the official launcher and start a vanilla 1.18.2 installation once. Let it reach the title screen, then close it. This creates the game files that a third-party profile manager expects.
  2. Install or open your profile manager. In CurseForge or Modrinth, search for “Isle of Berk” or “Claws of Berk.” Confirm that the result is the kesselot project and that its metadata identifies Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge.
  3. Select the current release. Choose the current 1.18.2 Forge file shown by the project. If you are joining an existing server, ask its administrator for the exact release number first; do not assume that “latest” is compatible with an older world.
  4. Create the profile. Allow the launcher to download the mod list, configuration files and resource-pack files. Do not remove individual files to make the profile look smaller; a missing dependency can produce a startup error or a client/server registry mismatch.
  5. Start the profile once. Wait for the Forge loading process and confirm that the Claws of Berk title screen appears. The first start may take longer while files and caches are created.
  6. Create or import a world. For a solo test, create a temporary world and verify that it loads. For multiplayer, leave the profile unchanged and use the server address supplied by the host.

Keep the installation reproducible

  • Record the Minecraft version, Forge version and modpack release shown in the profile.
  • Keep the profile’s configuration and resource-pack folders intact when copying it to another computer.
  • Do not add unrelated mods until the unmodified pack has launched successfully. Additional mods can make it difficult to identify whether a failure belongs to Claws of Berk or to the addition.
  • If two players receive different mod-list or registry errors, compare release numbers before changing settings.

Make a dedicated Claws of Berk server

A dedicated server is the better choice when the world should remain available without one player keeping a single-player session open. Download the ClawsOfBerk+Server-[3.2.6] archive that matches the client release you selected. The project’s files page supplies the server pack; the exact launcher filename and startup arguments can vary by release and by hosting environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a clean server directory. Use a new folder dedicated to this world. Do not extract the pack over an unrelated Forge server, because old mods and configurations can remain active even after you think they were removed.
  2. Download the matching server archive. Use the official files listing and verify the release number. A 3.2.x client should not be paired with an older server pack unless the creator explicitly documents that combination as compatible.
  3. Extract all supplied files. Preserve the directory structure. The archive may include a Forge/server launcher, mods, configurations and scripts; renaming or moving only some of them can break relative paths.
  4. Run the supplied Forge/server launcher once. Start it according to the files included in that release. Let the process stop after generating its initial files if it requests an EULA acceptance.
  5. Accept the Minecraft EULA. Open eula.txt, change the EULA setting to the accepted value required by Mojang’s server software, save the file and close it. The server will not start legally without that confirmation.
  6. Set server.properties. Configure the world name, difficulty, game mode, view or simulation distances and other options appropriate for your group. Keep the default network port unless you have a reason to change it, and note the final port for players.
  7. Start the server again. Allow it to generate the world and pack configuration. The first generation can take time; do not terminate the process merely because no player has joined yet.
  8. Install the matching client release for each player. Every connecting player needs the same Minecraft version, Forge family, modpack release and pack files. A vanilla client or a different release will normally fail during connection rather than quietly adapting.
  9. Share the correct address. Players on the same home network can usually use the server computer’s local address. Players elsewhere need the host’s reachable address and configured port. Port forwarding, firewall rules and carrier-grade NAT depend on the network provider and are not specified by the modpack itself.
  10. Back up before regular play. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration directories to separate storage, and retain at least one backup from before any pack update.

What the server files do and do not guarantee

The dedicated archive establishes that the project supports a server distribution; it does not establish a universal launcher name, memory default, port-forwarding recipe or maximum player count. Those details vary with the release and the host operating system. If a hosting panel asks for a server type, select its Forge option for Minecraft 1.18.2 and import the supplied server files rather than selecting a vanilla template.

Self-hosting or rented hosting?

Both approaches can run the same dedicated pack. The choice is operational: who controls the machine, who handles network access and who is responsible for backups and recovery?

Decision factor Self-hosted computer Rented game server
Setup effort You install Java/Forge files, configure the operating system, open the port and maintain the process. The provider supplies a panel and network endpoint, but you still need to import the correct server archive and configure the pack.
Control of files and configs Full access to launcher files, scripts, logs, world saves and operating-system settings. Control depends on the panel and file access offered by the provider; verify that custom Forge packs and configuration folders are supported.
Backups You choose the schedule and storage location and are responsible for testing restores. Automatic snapshots may be available, but retention, restore limits and extra fees are provider-specific. Keep an independent copy.
Player capacity Limited by the computer’s CPU, memory, storage speed and internet upload capacity. Limited by the selected plan and the provider’s node; no universal Claws of Berk capacity is published.
Network accessibility Requires a reachable address, firewall configuration and, often, port forwarding. The provider normally supplies a public endpoint, while you remain responsible for access control and the server port.
Modpack import Extract the official server archive directly and inspect every file. Confirm before paying that the panel accepts a custom Forge 1.18.2 server pack and permits file replacement.
Price No hosting fee, but electricity, hardware and internet costs are yours. A recurring fee set by the provider; current pricing is not specified by the project.
Support response You diagnose Forge logs, Java errors and network problems yourself. Support can help with the panel or machine, but it may not troubleshoot a third-party mod conflict.

A Modrinth release page for version 3.1.7 displays a rented-server promotion using the code Kess. The provider, price, commission arrangement and validity are not established here, so treat that display as an optional lead and verify current terms directly before committing to a plan. It is not a requirement for running the pack.

Connect friends without damaging the world

Before the first connection

  • Give every player the exact pack release, not merely the project name.
  • Confirm that all players are using Java Edition 1.18.2 with Forge.
  • Send the server address and port privately. Do not publish an unprotected home address on a public forum.
  • Agree on who can change server properties, install updates and restore backups.

When a player cannot join

Read the first error rather than repeatedly clicking reconnect. A “missing mods” or registry message points to a client/server file mismatch; compare the profile release and the server archive. A timeout or refused connection usually indicates an address, port, firewall or server-process issue rather than a dragon mod issue. If the server starts but crashes while loading a world, stop making client changes and inspect the server log after restoring the last known-good backup.

First goals in a new world

The official overview suggests four useful directions. They are not a rigid quest order, but they provide a safer opening plan than immediately flying into unexplored territory.

1. Establish shelter and supplies

Build a defensible base and gather ordinary food, tools and blocks before travelling far. The pack contains dragons ranging from small to large; the larger creatures make an unprepared expedition riskier. Keep spare supplies at the base so a failed trip does not end the world’s momentum.

2. Learn the generated terrain

Claws of Berk uses unusual world generation and varied terrain. Scout nearby regions on foot first, mark routes and note safe return paths. Terrain knowledge matters when a flight or dungeon run ends with low health, limited food or poor visibility.

  • When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!

3. Search for villages and Viking ships

Viking ships and villages are named points of interest in the project’s orientation. Treat them as exploration objectives: bring storage, lighting and a way to mark the route home rather than assuming every structure is safe.

4. Find dungeons

Dungeons are another core activity. Enter after preparing equipment and an escape route. If you are playing with friends, decide who carries recovery supplies and who records the location so a defeat does not erase the group’s progress.

5. Tame, ride and breed dragons

The Modrinth description highlights riding, taming and breeding various dragons. Use the early exploration period to learn the pack’s creature behavior before committing rare items or taking a newly acquired dragon into an unknown combat area. Dragon progression is a reason to explore repeatedly, not a substitute for maintaining a secure base.

Update Claws of Berk without losing items or worlds

Handle every pack update as a world-maintenance event. Even when a release launches successfully, storage formats, configuration data and resource loading can change. The 3.0.3 notes specifically instructed players to move items out of backpacks and iron chests into vanilla chests and to back up worlds before updating or reinstalling. That release also changed storage mods and Dragon Manual data.

  1. Read the target release notes. Look for storage, world-generation, creature-data and configuration changes before downloading.
  2. Stop the server or close the single-player game. Never copy a live world while files are still being written.
  3. Create a dated backup. Copy the complete world save and relevant configuration files. Keep the pre-update copy separate from the copy you intend to test.
  4. Migrate vulnerable storage. For an update with the 3.0.3 warning, empty backpacks and iron chests into ordinary vanilla chests before changing versions. Label those chests so the contents can be checked after the update.
  5. Record pack-specific data. Note important Dragon Manual information and any custom settings that you may need to recreate if a configuration file is regenerated.
  6. Update all participants together. Replace the server files and every client profile with the same release. Do not let one player join with an older profile “just to test.”
  7. Start a test copy first. If possible, restore the backup to a separate directory and load it there. Check player inventories, storage chests, dragon data, structures and the spawn area.
  8. Only then update the live world. Preserve the old backup until several successful sessions have passed.

Why release notes matter

Version 3.1.8 documented a deadlock-fix mod, resource-pack load-order changes, a chunk-timeout fix and a brewing-stand crash fix. Those entries show that an apparently small update can affect startup, chunk loading, visual assets and specific blocks. Upgrade the server and clients as one unit, and keep a rollback copy even when the release is described as a fix update.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely check Recovery action
The launcher will not reach the title screen Minecraft version, Forge selection, incomplete download or altered profile files Confirm Java 1.18.2 and the pack’s Forge profile, then reinstall the unmodified release in a clean profile.
“Missing mods” or registry mismatch when joining Client and server release numbers or mod/config files differ Compare the exact release on both sides and reinstall from the matching client and server archives.
Server stops after the first run EULA not accepted or the supplied launcher was not used Read eula.txt, accept the EULA as required, and rerun the launcher included with the server archive.
Players outside the home cannot connect Wrong public address, blocked port, firewall or carrier-grade NAT Test locally first, then verify the configured port and network reachability with the internet provider or host.
World loads but items are missing after an update Storage-mod or data-format change Stop immediately and restore the pre-update backup. For future updates, move contents from backpacks and iron chests into vanilla chests when release notes require it.
Chunks time out or a brewing stand crashes Pack-version-specific bug or incomplete 3.1.8-era fix set Confirm that every machine uses the same current release, back up the world and consult the relevant release notes before changing files.
Resource packs appear in the wrong order Resource-pack load-order change documented for 3.1.8 Use the profile’s supplied resource-pack files and reset custom ordering before testing additional packs.

What to back up

  • The world save: terrain, structures, player locations and inventories.
  • Server configuration: server.properties and the pack’s configuration files.
  • Pack-specific data: Dragon Manual information and any other data files called out by the release notes.
  • Custom resource and script files: retain them separately so a clean reinstall does not accidentally overwrite the only copy.
  • A version record: write the Minecraft, Forge and Claws of Berk release numbers in the backup folder name.

A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Periodically copy it to a second disk or service, open a test instance from that copy and verify that players, inventories, dragons and important structures are present.

Practical installation and hosting decisions

For a solo player, the profile-manager installation is enough: launch the unmodified 1.18.2 Forge profile, create a world and begin with shelter and local exploration. For a small group that plays at different times, use the dedicated server archive and make one person responsible for release matching and backups. For a public server, the license allows that use, but network security, moderation, backups and support become your responsibilities; the pack’s official pages do not provide a universal capacity or operations plan.

The safest rule is simple: identify the exact release first, keep the client and server identical, and treat updates as migrations rather than routine file replacements. That approach preserves the dragon, dungeon and exploration systems that make Isle of Berk worth running while giving you a recoverable path when a format or dependency changes.
