Yes, but the method depends on the device. A Windows PC or compatible Windows gaming handheld can install supported PC Game Pass titles through the Xbox PC app and run them locally. A supported smart TV does not install the Windows version of a game; it streams eligible titles through Xbox Cloud Gaming in the Xbox app. TVs and other streaming devices require model-specific support, a compatible controller, an eligible subscription, and availability in your country.
The practical decision is therefore local installation versus cloud streaming. Use the checks below before buying a subscription, TV, handheld, or streaming device.

How Game Pass works on each device
Game Pass is not one universal software mode. Your device determines whether a game is installed locally or delivered as an interactive video stream from Microsoft’s servers.

Using Game Pass on a Windows PC
What you can install
On a supported Windows 11 gaming PC, open the Xbox PC app, sign in with the Microsoft account that holds your subscription, and browse the PC catalog. A Game Pass subscription does not turn every Xbox console game into a native Windows game. The listing must specifically offer a PC version, and that version can have separate hardware, storage, operating-system, and launcher requirements.
Some titles are available both for local PC installation and cloud streaming; others are limited to one method. Read the individual game page rather than assuming that a console listing is also a PC listing.
Typical installation path
- Install or update Windows 11 and the Xbox PC app.
- Sign in to the Xbox app with the account that owns the eligible Game Pass subscription.
- Search for the game and select its PC listing. Check the platform label, age rating, storage size, and requirements.
- Choose Install, select a drive and folder when prompted, and allow the Xbox app and any required gaming services to finish setup.
- Launch from the Xbox app or Windows Start menu. Keep the app and Windows components updated if a title will not start.
Local installation uses your computer’s processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage, and operating system. Download time, frame rate, resolution, and peripheral support therefore vary by game and by PC; the subscription itself does not provide a performance guarantee.

Cloud play on a PC
Cloud gaming is a different route from installing a PC game. When the account, title, subscription, browser or app, and region are supported, the game runs remotely and the PC receives an interactive stream. Cloud availability can differ from PC-download availability, so check both labels on the title page. Current plan benefits and game eligibility change; consult the live terms and the game listing immediately before relying on cloud play.
Using Game Pass on a Windows handheld
Windows handhelds
A Windows-based gaming handheld can use the same Xbox PC app path as a Windows PC: install supported PC titles locally, then play with the handheld’s built-in controls or a connected input device. The broad Windows handheld route is described in Microsoft’s Windows 11 gaming guidance, but it is not an exhaustive model-by-model compatibility list.

Portable hardware does not guarantee that every Game Pass PC title will run well. A demanding game may require lower resolution, reduced graphics settings, a power connection, or more storage than the handheld provides. A title may also launch successfully but lack convenient controller mapping, readable interface text, suspend/resume behavior, or an input scheme designed for a small screen.
Handheld checks before installing
- Operating system: Confirm that the device runs a supported Windows edition and can install the current Xbox PC app. Do not assume that a non-Windows handheld supports the Windows app.
- Game requirements: Compare the game’s listed processor, graphics, memory, storage, and operating-system requirements with the handheld’s specifications.
- Controls: Verify that the title supports a gamepad and that its button prompts match the handheld’s layout. Some launchers or menus may still need touch, a trackpad, or an external keyboard.
- Storage: Check the full install size plus room for updates. A removable card can help only if the device, file system, and game installation support it.
- Power and thermals: Performance can change between battery and plugged-in modes. Heat, fan noise, and battery drain are practical constraints even when the minimum requirements are met.
- Account and services: Sign into the Xbox app and any separate publisher launcher the game requires; entitlement follows the account used for the subscription.
Non-Windows handhelds
Devices running another operating system need separate compatibility verification. The Windows guidance does not establish native Xbox PC-app support for every non-Windows handheld, including popular Linux-based models. Treat browser cloud play, streaming from another computer, or community workarounds as distinct options rather than native PC-app support, and verify the exact device and software path before purchase.

Cloud streaming can be useful when a handheld cannot run a title locally or when storage is limited. It still depends on a supported browser or app route, an eligible subscription, the game’s cloud availability, and a reliable network. A handheld’s screen and controls may make streaming comfortable, but its form factor does not remove the account, region, or title restrictions that apply on other devices. Xbox announced in an August 27, 2025 Insider update that participating Core and Standard subscribers were being tested for additional streaming and play options; that test is not a permanent entitlement for every subscriber. Using Game Pass on a smart TV
TV play is cloud streaming, not a local PC install
On a supported smart TV, the Xbox app delivers games through Xbox Cloud Gaming. The television does not download and run the Windows PC build. The remote game session is rendered elsewhere and streamed to the TV, while your controller inputs travel back to the service. Consequently, a TV’s storage and graphics processor are not used like a gaming PC’s, but account eligibility, app availability, controller support, and network conditions become essential.
Supported TV and streaming-device families
Xbox currently identifies selected Samsung and LG smart TVs and selected Amazon Fire TV devices on its Xbox on TVs page. Support is selective: a television brand appearing on the page does not mean that every model, year, operating-system version, or country is supported.

On April 23, 2025, Xbox announced cloud gaming through the Xbox app on selected LG models in more than 25 countries, with that launch context naming Game Pass Ultimate members. The announcement does not make every LG television compatible or establish a universal plan entitlement. On January 5, 2026, Xbox announced that the app would come to selected Hisense and V homeOS-powered smart TVs during 2026, with subscribers on the named plans able to stream hundreds of games on supported TVs. That is a rolling availability announcement, not proof that the app has reached every model or market. Check the rollout status for the exact television and country before treating it as available. TV setup checklist
- Find the television’s exact model number, screen size, year, operating-system version, and country setting.
- Open the TV’s app store and search for the Xbox app, or check the current supported-device list at xbox.com/en-us/xbox-on-tvs.
- Install the app, launch it, and sign in with the Microsoft account holding the eligible subscription.
- Pair a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller using the television or streaming device’s documented pairing process. A controller is required for normal game input; compatibility depends on the host device.
- Choose a cloud-eligible game and test playback before buying accessories or changing your subscription.
If the TV lacks the native app, a supported Fire TV device may provide the Xbox app route, but the exact device model and regional support still require verification. Adding a streaming device is an alternative to replacing a television; it is not a guarantee that every unsupported TV configuration will work.
Subscription, catalog, and region checks
There is no single permanent entitlement table covering every Game Pass plan, device, and game. Plan names, benefits, cloud access, catalog membership, and regional availability can change. The official material establishes that an active eligible subscription is generally required for cloud games, while the LG launch specifically named Ultimate in that launch context. The August 2025 Insider article described a test involving participating Core and Standard subscribers, which should not be read as a standing benefit for all members.

- Whether the title is in the PC catalog, the cloud catalog, or both.
- Whether your exact subscription tier includes the relevant install or streaming entitlement.
- Whether the title is offered in your country and language region.
- Whether the game requires a separate publisher account, launcher, age setting, or online service.
- Whether the entitlement remains available; catalog games can be added or removed.
For a TV, also verify that the app is downloadable in your country and that the model is supported today. A press announcement can describe a rollout without meaning that your particular television has received the app yet.
What affects cloud-play quality
Cloud play depends on the complete connection between your controller, home network, internet service, regional data center, and display device. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal minimum speed, latency number, or performance guarantee, so no fixed threshold should be treated as a promise.
- Use the most stable connection available to the TV or streaming device; wired networking may be preferable where supported.
- Reduce competing downloads, high-bitrate video streams, and large updates while testing a game.
- Keep the controller near the host device and remove unnecessary Bluetooth connections if input becomes intermittent.
- Test at the time and location you will normally play. A setup that works during a quiet afternoon may behave differently during household peak use.
- Expect visual quality and responsiveness to vary by title, service load, network route, and region.
Local PC or handheld installation avoids video-stream dependency after the download, but it demands adequate hardware and storage. Cloud play avoids a large install and can run on modest hardware, but it cannot overcome an unsupported model, unavailable game, ineligible plan, or unstable connection.

The Xbox app is missing from the TV
Confirm the exact model, operating-system version, store country, and current supported-device list. If the model is not listed, check whether a supported streaming device is available in your region. Do not infer support from the television brand alone.
The app installs but a game will not start
Recheck account sign-in, subscription entitlement, cloud catalog status, age restrictions, and regional availability. A game can appear in one catalog but not another, and a PC-install listing is not automatically a cloud listing.

The picture is blurry or controls feel delayed
Test the network without other heavy traffic, move the device closer to the access point or use a wired connection where possible, update the TV or streaming device, and re-pair the controller. If the problem persists across multiple games and times of day, the route or service conditions may be unsuitable for cloud play; local installation on a capable Windows device is the alternative.
A handheld game launches but controls do not work correctly
Check the game’s controller mode, update the handheld and Xbox app, and try an external controller or keyboard for launcher screens. Compare the title’s requirements with the handheld’s hardware rather than assuming that a successful install means acceptable performance.
The game is not available on PC
Look for a PC-specific listing. Game Pass console availability does not create a Windows build. If the title is cloud-enabled and your device and plan support cloud play, streaming may be possible; otherwise, use a platform on which the game is officially offered.

The shortest accurate answer is: use the Xbox PC app for supported PC games on Windows; use the Xbox app and Xbox Cloud Gaming for supported TVs; and treat handheld support as an exact Windows-model and game-by-game check. Verify the live device list, subscription terms, catalog entry, and regional availability immediately before purchase or setup because all four can change.
