What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes, but usually not locally. A Raspberry Pi 5 can run the Steam Link client, allowing you to play games rendered by a separate gaming PC. The Pi receives the video and audio, then sends your controller input back to the host computer. It is therefore a compact Steam streaming box—not a replacement for a Windows gaming PC or Steam Deck.
What “running Steam games” means on a Raspberry Pi
There are three different ways a Raspberry Pi might be described as running Steam games:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Steam Link streaming: the recommended option. Your gaming PC runs Steam and renders the game; the Pi acts as the receiver.
- Local installation: experimental and highly dependent on the individual game. The Pi’s Arm processor and VideoCore GPU are not equivalent to the x86-64 hardware and graphics stack targeted by most PC games.
- Cloud gaming: a remote server runs the game, while the Pi acts as a browser or streaming client. This avoids local compatibility problems but requires reliable internet access and usually a subscription.
The practical answer is simple: your Raspberry Pi can play your Steam games, but in the reliable setup another computer is running them.

The best setup: Raspberry Pi 5 plus Steam Link
For a new installation, the Raspberry Pi 5 is the sensible default. Its 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, VideoCore VII GPU, Vulkan 1.2 support, Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, USB 3.0 and dual 4K60 display capability make it well suited to receiving a game stream. The full specifications are listed in Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 product brief.
#1 Best Overall
- Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM: Model SC1112 featuring a quad-core ARM Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz. Enhanced Connectivity: Includes dual 4K micro HDMI ports, USB-C power input, and high-speed USB 3.0 ports. PCIe Expansion Support: FPC connector enables M.2 NVMe SSDs when using compatible adapters. Fast Storage Options: Works with microSD cards for booting, or optional NVMe storage for advanced projects. Built for Projects & Learning: Ideal for programming, home labs, DIY electronics, automation, and Linux-based development.
Raspberry Pi says its Steam Link implementation can support up to 4K60 or 1080p240 under suitable conditions. Those figures describe streaming capability, not local game-rendering performance. The host PC must render the game at the desired resolution and frame rate, and the host GPU, hardware encoder, network, HDMI connection and display must all support the result.
The Pi 5 is not automatically the best purchase for every player. For Steam Link, extra RAM is unlikely to transform the experience. Network quality, host-PC hardware, cooling and the display matter more than choosing an 8GB or 16GB model solely for streaming.
What you need
- Raspberry Pi 5
- 64-bit desktop edition of Raspberry Pi OS
- A high-quality microSD card; NVMe storage is optional
- Official Raspberry Pi 27W USB-C power supply, or a demonstrably compatible 5V/5A supply
- Active cooling, such as the Active Cooler or a fan-equipped Pi 5 case
- HDMI cable and a TV or monitor
- Controller, connected by USB or Bluetooth
- A separate PC with Steam installed, signed in and able to launch the games
- Preferably, Ethernet between both the host PC and the Pi
A microSD card is sufficient for Steam Link. An NVMe drive can improve general storage responsiveness and durability, but it will not make a streamed game render faster because the game is running on the host PC.

How to install Steam Link
On a fresh Raspberry Pi OS desktop installation, open Terminal and run:
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
sudo apt install steamlink
steamlink
Raspberry Pi’s Steam Link announcement publishes the same app-install path using sudo apt upgrade. The general Raspberry Pi OS documentation currently recommends full-upgrade for routine system updates, so that is the more current update command to use here.

After Steam Link opens, it searches for Steam computers on the local network. Select the host PC and follow the pairing prompt. Steam may show a PIN on the host computer. Once pairing is complete, the Pi displays the host’s Steam interface, from which you can launch installed games.
Menu names and pairing screens can change between Steam Link releases, but the important relationship does not: Steam Link is connecting to a computer that runs Steam, rather than installing the PC game on the Pi.
Prepare the host PC
On the host computer:
- Install Steam and sign in.
- Install the games you want to play.
- Make sure Steam Remote Play or Steam Link functionality is enabled in Steam’s settings.
- Keep Steam running and confirm that the PC can launch the game normally.
- Connect the PC to the router by Ethernet if possible.
- Connect a controller to the Pi or host, then test it in Steam before launching the game.
Steam Link does not bypass ownership requirements, game installation, account sign-ins, publisher launchers, regional restrictions or anti-cheat policies. If the host PC cannot launch the game, the Pi cannot stream it.
Use Ethernet first
Steam’s Steam Link guidance recommends a wired network. It notes that 5GHz Wi-Fi may work, but is not recommended for Raspberry Pi. For the most predictable result, connect both devices to the same router with Ethernet.
A sensible setup order is:
- Wire the host PC and Pi to the router.
- Start at 1080p60 with a moderate bitrate.
- Play a real game for several minutes rather than judging only the Steam menu.
- Increase resolution or refresh rate only after the connection is stable.
Avoid guest Wi-Fi, congested repeaters and powerline adapters while diagnosing problems. They may work in some homes, but they add variables and can increase latency or cause packet loss.

Start with 1080p60. It is a better baseline than immediately attempting 4K or an unusually high refresh rate. If the host PC, display, network and HDMI path can support it, you can then try a higher resolution or refresh rate.

Even when the Pi can receive a 4K60 or 1080p240 stream, that does not mean every game will achieve those settings. The host must render the game at that frame rate, encode it quickly, and send the stream without congestion. A 4K60 display is also required for 4K60 output, while high-refresh streaming is wasted on a display that cannot show it.
Steam Link is generally a better fit for turn-based games, strategy titles, RPGs, slower single-player games, controller-friendly games and couch co-op. It is a less suitable choice for competitive shooters, rhythm games, fighting games and precision platformers, where additional network and encoding latency can be noticeable.
Controllers and input
USB controllers are the simplest troubleshooting starting point. Bluetooth controllers can also be paired with the Pi, while a keyboard and mouse are useful for desktop navigation. A controller being recognized by Linux does not guarantee that it will be mapped correctly inside Steam Link or accepted by a particular game.

If input is unreliable, test over USB, reconnect the controller after Steam Link starts, and check Steam Input settings for the individual game. Some games expect XInput, DirectInput, keyboard or mouse input, so generic controllers may require additional mapping.
Can a Raspberry Pi install and run Steam games locally?
Sometimes, experimentally—but this is not a dependable general-purpose solution.
Raspberry Pi computers use Arm processors, while the standard Steam desktop client and most Steam games target x86-64 Windows or Linux systems. Projects involving Box64, Box86, Proton and experimental Arm64 software builds can combine translation and compatibility layers, but each added layer creates more opportunities for failure.

Proton translates Windows game APIs for Linux; it does not, by itself, translate an x86-64 game into an Arm program. A local experiment may additionally need x86-to-Arm translation, suitable graphics drivers, 32-bit libraries and game-specific workarounds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon failure points include anti-cheat systems, DRM, publisher launchers, middleware, modern 3D engines, Vulkan limitations, missing libraries, shader compilation and insufficient CPU or GPU performance. A game that installs, opens a menu or runs a short demo may still crash or perform poorly during normal play.
Community compatibility lists are useful only when they identify the Pi model and RAM, OS release, graphics driver, translation-layer versions, game version, resolution, frame-rate target, controller behavior and long-session stability. Without those details, “it runs” is not a reliable buying recommendation.
Why the Pi 5 may not be the cheapest gaming device
The board price is only part of a working setup. Add power, cooling, case, storage, HDMI cable, controller and possibly Ethernet cabling. Raspberry Pi’s official product brief lists Pi 5 configurations from 1GB through 16GB, with prices and regional availability subject to change; check the official product page and local reseller before buying.
For Steam Link, buying a Pi makes the most sense if you already own a capable gaming PC and want a small, customizable living-room endpoint. If you need the Pi itself to run games, the complete cost may approach that of an x86 mini PC or handheld PC with better software compatibility.
Raspberry Pi versus the alternatives
| Option | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5 with Steam Link | Streaming from an existing gaming PC to a TV or second room | Requires a host PC and good local networking |
| Steam Deck | Installing and playing Steam games locally, with integrated controls | Less useful for GPIO projects and DIY experimentation; check live pricing at Valve’s official page |
| x86 mini PC | Local Steam gaming, Windows compatibility and older or indie games | Usually costs more as a complete system and is less maker-oriented |
| Cloud gaming | Players without a gaming PC but with fast, stable internet | Recurring fees, service availability, queues, compression and internet-dependent latency |
A dedicated Steam Link device may also be simpler if you already have access to one, but availability and second-hand pricing are volatile.

Troubleshooting Steam Link on Raspberry Pi
The Steam Link package cannot be found
Refresh package information and inspect whether the package is available:
sudo apt update
apt-cache policy steamlink
sudo apt install steamlink
If it remains unavailable, check the Raspberry Pi OS edition, architecture and repository configuration. Avoid adding random third-party repositories without checking their trustworthiness and maintenance.
Steam Link cannot find the PC
- Confirm both devices are on the same local network.
- Make sure Steam is running on the host.
- Check host firewall rules for Steam and Remote Play traffic.
- Ensure the PC is not on a guest or isolated Wi-Fi network.
- Temporarily test without a VPN.
- Check whether the router blocks device-to-device traffic.
Video stutters or shows connection warnings
- Replace Wi-Fi with Ethernet.
- Lower the stream to 1080p60.
- Reduce the bitrate.
- Connect the host PC by Ethernet.
- Stop bandwidth-heavy traffic, overlays or VPN software.
- Check the host’s CPU and GPU encoder load.
- Check the Pi for overheating or throttling and add active cooling if necessary.
- Try another HDMI cable and display.
Audio works but video does not
Test a lower resolution or refresh rate, check the HDMI connection and review Steam Link video settings. Also verify that Raspberry Pi OS and its graphics stack are current. If the failure occurs only at 4K or high refresh rates, the display, cable, decoding path or host encoder may be the limiting factor.
The controller is detected but the game ignores it
Try a USB connection, reconnect after Steam Link starts, and check Steam Input for that game. Confirm whether the game expects XInput, DirectInput, keyboard or mouse input. Testing with a known Xbox-compatible controller can help separate a controller-mapping issue from a Steam Link problem.
Final verdict
Buy a Raspberry Pi 5 for Steam gaming if you already have a gaming PC, Ethernet access and a specific need for a small living-room streaming client. Use Steam Link, start at 1080p60, add proper power and cooling, and treat higher resolutions as conditional capabilities.
Do not buy a Pi 5 expecting modern Steam games to run locally like they do on a Steam Deck or x86 Windows mini PC. For local installation, integrated controls and fewer compatibility experiments, an x86 gaming device is the better choice.
