Download the LiDE 300 driver only from Canon’s official CanoScan LiDE 300 support page. Select your exact operating system and version before downloading: Canon provides a complete Windows package, a standalone TWAIN scanner driver, and a separate software package for Mac, including a package identified for macOS 15.
If ScanGear will not install, remove the existing CanoScan driver, restart the computer, and reinstall the current package from Canon’s website. The procedure below explains which download to choose, how to install it, and what to do when Windows or macOS still cannot detect the scanner.

What the LiDE 300 driver does
The Canon CanoScan LiDE 300 is a USB flatbed scanner. Its driver is the software layer that lets Windows or macOS communicate with the scanner and expose it to Canon utilities and compatible scanning applications. ScanGear is Canon’s scanner driver and TWAIN interface; applications that support TWAIN can use it to acquire a scan.

The LiDE 300 uses a contact image sensor (CIS) and a three-colour RGB LED light source. Canon lists an optical resolution of 2400 × 2400 dpi. Canon’s 2018 specifications quote approximately 10 seconds for a 300 dpi, letter-size colour document and approximately 5 seconds for a 300 dpi, 4 × 6-inch colour photo. The scanner uses one USB cable for both data and power, so Canon’s product documentation does not specify a separate power brick.

Choose the correct Canon download
Canon software and drivers are operating-system specific, and Canon warns that not every application is compatible with every operating-system version. On the support page, first choose the operating-system family and then the exact version shown by your computer. Do not select a package merely because its name contains “LiDE 300”; the operating-system selection is part of the compatibility check.

Canon describes the full Windows download as a file that “will download and install the drivers, application or manual you need to set up the full functionality of your product.” Canon describes the standalone Windows file as “a TWAIN-compliant scanner driver for Canon color image scanner.” Those descriptions explain the practical difference: choose the full package for the broadest Canon workflow, or the standalone driver when an existing TWAIN application is all you need.

Before downloading
- Identify the operating system. In Windows, open Settings, select System, then About, and note the Windows edition and system type. In macOS, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac; record the macOS version.
- Disconnect the scanner temporarily. Leave the USB cable unplugged while the installer runs unless Canon’s installer specifically asks you to connect it.
- Close scanning programs. Exit ScanGear, IJ Scan Utility, image editors and any other software that may have the scanner open.
- Use an administrator account. Windows may request administrator approval to install a device driver. On macOS, be ready to enter an administrator password.
- Keep the USB cable available. The LiDE 300 receives power through USB, so use a direct computer port during setup rather than an unpowered hub.
Install the LiDE 300 driver on Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Open Canon’s official CanoScan LiDE 300 support page.
- Set the product to CanoScan LiDE 300, select Windows, and choose the exact Windows version offered for your computer.
- Download the LiDE 300 Full Driver & Software Package if you want Canon’s complete software, or download LiDE 300 Scanner Driver Ver.1.01 if you only require ScanGear/TWAIN support.
- When the download finishes, open the installer from your Downloads folder. If Windows displays a security prompt, confirm that the publisher is Canon and approve the installer.
- Follow the setup wizard. Connect the scanner by USB only when the wizard requests it. If no prompt appears, wait until the installation has completed before connecting the device.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests a restart. A restart allows the newly installed driver service and device registration to load cleanly.
- Open IJ Scan Utility, if you installed the full package, and select the LiDE 300. Alternatively, open a TWAIN-compatible application and choose the LiDE 300 as its scanner source.
- Make a low-resolution test scan first. Confirm that the preview appears, the scan completes, and the saved file opens normally before attempting a large batch.
Which Windows package should you keep?
The full package is the practical choice for users who want Canon’s document, photo, custom and stitch scanning modes, along with IJ Scan Utility and related components. The standalone Ver.1.01 driver is narrower: it supplies TWAIN-compliant scanner support without promising the complete Canon utility set. Installing both packages is unnecessary unless Canon’s installer specifically requires it; start with one package that matches your intended workflow.
Install the LiDE 300 package on macOS
- Open Canon’s CanoScan LiDE 300 support page and select macOS rather than Windows.
- Choose the exact macOS version installed on the Mac. Canon publishes a LiDE 300 Software Package for Mac, with macOS 15 identified on the package page.
- Download the Mac software package and open the downloaded installer.
- Read the installer prompts, accept the licence terms, and provide an administrator password when macOS asks for one.
- Allow the installer to add the Canon scanner software if macOS displays a security or privacy confirmation.
- Connect the LiDE 300 directly by USB after the installer requests the connection, then finish setup.
- Use IJ Scan Utility Lite or another compatible scanning application to select the LiDE 300 and create a test scan.
If macOS blocks a component, open System Settings and review Privacy & Security for a Canon system-software approval prompt. Only approve software installed from the Canon package you intentionally downloaded. If the package does not list your macOS version, return to the support page and re-check the operating-system selection instead of forcing an installer for another release.

Fix “ScanGear will not install” and other failed installations
Canon’s online manual gives a specific recovery path: if ScanGear cannot be installed from the Setup CD-ROM, download and install the scanner driver from Canon’s web page. The same clean-reinstall approach is useful when an earlier driver is incomplete or corrupted.
- Disconnect the scanner. Unplug the USB cable and close all scanning applications.
- Remove the old CanoScan driver. In Windows, open Settings, select Apps, then Installed apps, locate the CanoScan or LiDE 300 software, and choose Uninstall. If Canon’s package includes its own uninstaller, use that entry. On macOS, follow Canon’s uninstall instructions for the installed package rather than deleting random system files.
- Restart the computer. Do not skip this step; it clears driver components that may still be loaded.
- Download a fresh package. Return to Canon’s LiDE 300 support page, select the exact operating system and version again, and download the full package or standalone driver as appropriate.
- Install before reconnecting. Run the installer with the scanner disconnected until prompted. This prevents the operating system from attaching a partially installed device entry.
- Reconnect directly. Use a different USB port if possible, avoid an unpowered hub, and allow Windows or macOS time to finish device detection.
- Test with Canon software. A successful preview in IJ Scan Utility or IJ Scan Utility Lite shows that the driver and scanner communication are working. If Canon software works but a third-party application does not, select the LiDE 300 again inside that application and verify that it supports TWAIN or the relevant macOS scanner interface.
If the installer stops or reports that no scanner is found
- Confirm that the USB cable is firmly seated at both ends and that the scanner’s indicator light responds when connected.
- Try a direct USB port on the computer rather than a hub, dock or front-panel extension.
- Restart after uninstalling, even if Windows does not demand it.
- Check that you downloaded the package for the current Windows or macOS version, not an older edition selected by mistake.
- Temporarily close security software only if your organization’s policy allows it; restore normal protection immediately after installation. Do not install a driver from an unofficial mirror.
- If the scanner works on another compatible computer, the problem is likely local to the first computer’s software, USB configuration or permissions. If it fails everywhere after a clean installation, hardware, cable or USB-port failure becomes more likely.
Verify the update after installation
Verification should test both detection and scanning. On Windows, open the installed Canon utility or a TWAIN-compatible program, choose the LiDE 300, preview a page, and save a test image. On Mac, use IJ Scan Utility Lite or another compatible application and perform the same preview-and-save test. Check that the resulting file opens, that colours and orientation are reasonable, and that the scanner completes without disconnecting.

For routine work, Canon’s software ecosystem includes ScanGear, IJ Scan Utility on Windows, IJ Scan Utility Lite on Mac, OCR functions, and document, photo, custom and stitch scan modes. The available functions depend on the operating system and the package installed, so a missing utility does not necessarily mean the scanner driver itself failed.

The safest source is Canon’s official support page, selected for the exact operating system and version. Avoid driver-download sites that bundle installers, alter Canon files or offer packages for a different model. Keep the downloaded installer until the scanner has passed a test scan, then remove it if disk space is limited. A driver update cannot repair a physically damaged scanner, defective USB cable or failed computer port.

When replacement is more sensible than another reinstall
Consider replacement only after the correct Canon package has been installed, the old driver has been removed and the computer has been restarted. Persistent failure on multiple compatible computers, intermittent USB power, a scanner that is never detected, or mechanical noise points away from a software-only problem. The LiDE 300 remains a compact, USB-powered flatbed model; if your needs have changed, compare a replacement’s operating-system support, connection type, optical resolution and included software before buying.
