Check the complete path, digital signature, version, command line, parent process and SHA-256 hash before you disable, delete or quarantine it. A legitimate VMware process can consume substantial CPU, memory, disk and network capacity because it hosts a running virtual machine; an unsigned copy in a temporary or user-writable folder needs malware triage.
What vmware.exe does
VMware describes a virtual machine as a software-based compute resource that runs programs and deploys applications instead of relying on a separate physical computer. System virtualization uses a hypervisor, such as VMware ESXi or a hypervisor running above a host operating system, to provide the guest operating system with virtual hardware.

On a Windows desktop, the virtual machine normally runs as a host process while its display appears in an application window. VMware identifies logs, NVRAM, virtual disks and configuration files as parts of a virtual machine. The executable you see in Task Manager is therefore one part of a larger installation, not a universal Windows component with one fixed location or behavior.

Different VMware products and releases can use different folders, arguments and helper processes. A process named vmware.exe may start only when a virtual machine is launched, remain active while the VMware application is open, or appear as part of a background component. You cannot identify the product, version or legitimacy from the basename alone.

Is vmware.exe safe or malware?
There is no yes-or-no answer based solely on the name. A copy that belongs to an installed VMware product, carries a valid VMware publisher signature, sits in the expected installation directory and has a matching version and hash is consistent with legitimate software. A copy with no valid signature, an unexpected command line, a random temporary path or persistence unrelated to VMware deserves investigation.
Do not treat an unfamiliar location as automatic proof of infection: administrators can install software outside the default directory, and a legitimate update can temporarily use another folder. Conversely, a familiar-looking filename does not make a file safe. Malware can copy a trusted product name. Use several independent indicators before taking action.
Indicators of a legitimate process
- The file’s signature identifies VMware as the signer and Windows reports that the certificate is valid.
- The full path matches the VMware product installed on your computer and is not an arbitrary download, temporary or user-writable directory.
- The file version and hash correspond to the installed product release or a documented update.
- The parent process and child-process chain begin with the VMware application or a normal Windows service used by that installation.
- The process starts when you open VMware or power on a virtual machine and stops after the application and guest have shut down.
Warning signs
- The signature is missing, invalid or issued to a publisher unrelated to VMware.
- The command line launches scripts, encoded commands or unrelated programs.
- The process starts at logon or through a scheduled task even though no VMware product is installed or used.
- The file is in a download, temporary, browser-cache or other unexpected user-writable directory.
- Its network activity, parent process or hash does not fit the VMware installation on the computer.
Broadcom VMware security guidance notes that general-purpose environments need antivirus and malware detection to reduce the risk of arbitrary executables being loaded from indeterminate sources. Keep endpoint protection enabled while you investigate; do not assume that virtualization software itself provides malware protection for the host or guest.

A running virtual machine is a software computer sharing the host’s physical resources. The host process can therefore consume CPU cycles for guest workloads, reserve memory assigned to the guest, and perform disk and network I/O for virtual disks and virtual network adapters. A game, compiler, update or other intensive task inside the guest can make the host process appear busy even when Windows on the host is idle.

Resource use should be interpreted alongside the VM state. If the process becomes active only after a VM is powered on, the load is usually related to that guest. If it consumes resources while every VM is shut down, inspect background VMware components, stuck processes, scheduled tasks and the process path rather than assuming the executable is malicious.
Safe ways to reduce legitimate load
- Inside the guest operating system, close the workload that is using CPU, memory or disk and shut down the guest normally.
- In the VMware application, power off or suspend the virtual machine before changing its virtual hardware allocation. Do not force-close the host process while the guest is writing data.
- Close the VMware application after all guests have shut down, then confirm in Task Manager that the process exits.
- Check the host’s Task Manager performance graphs and the guest’s own task manager to determine whether the pressure originates in the guest or on the host.
- If high usage continues with no guest running, capture the executable path, command line and parent process, then investigate the installation or run a security scan.
There is no safe universal CPU or memory percentage for vmware.exe. The amount depends on the guest workload, virtual hardware allocation, host capacity and background activity. Avoid online claims that assign one normal number to every VMware installation.
How to verify the exact file
Record evidence before terminating, deleting or quarantining anything. The following workflow works with built-in Windows tools; Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer can provide a clearer process tree when it is available to you.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →1. Capture the path and command line
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and select Details.
- Right-click the column headings, choose Select columns, and enable Command line if that option is present.
- Find
vmware.exe, note its process ID, executable path and command-line arguments, and choose Open file location. - If Task Manager does not show the complete path, run PowerShell as an administrator and use:
Get-CimInstance Win32_Process -Filter "Name='vmware.exe'" | Select-Object ProcessId,ExecutablePath,CommandLine,ParentProcessId
The path is more informative than the filename. Compare it with the VMware product actually installed, but do not assume that every VMware release uses the same directory.

2. Check publisher and certificate
- In the file location, right-click the executable and choose Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and that the publisher is VMware. Record certificate status and any warning.
- For a repeatable check, run:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature 'C:fullpathvmware.exe'
A valid signature supports legitimacy but does not prove that the process is appropriate for your current system. A missing or invalid signature is a reason to stop and investigate, not an instruction to delete the file immediately.
3. Record version and hash
On the file’s Details tab, record product name, file version and creation or update time. Calculate a SHA-256 hash without uploading the file anywhere:
Get-FileHash 'C:fullpathvmware.exe' -Algorithm SHA256
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCompare the version and hash with trusted records for the VMware product installed in your organization. There is no single published hash or file size that applies to every VMware edition and release.

4. Trace parents, persistence and connections
- Use Process Explorer or Task Manager’s process relationships to identify the parent and child processes. A VMware application launching the executable is materially different from a document viewer, script host or random updater doing so.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for the VMware product and its version. Also review Task Manager > Startup apps and relevant Task Scheduler entries for unexpected automatic launches.
- Open Resource Monitor from the Start menu, select the process under CPU or Network, and record remote connections. Network activity should be interpreted with the VM’s own services and update behavior in mind.
- Note whether the process appears only when a virtual machine is running. That timing is useful evidence, although it is not a substitute for signature and path checks.
Legitimate VMware process versus an impersonator
| Check | Consistent with the installed VMware process | Needs investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Publisher signature | Valid VMware signature and certificate | Missing, invalid or unrelated publisher |
| Full path | Matches the installed VMware product’s recorded location | Unexpected temporary, download or user-writable location |
| Parent and child chain | Launched by the VMware application or an associated installation component | Launched by an unrelated script, document or unknown program |
| Command line | Arguments fit the VMware product and VM being used | Encoded commands or unrelated executable and script launches |
| Start behavior | Appears when VMware or a virtual machine starts | Persists at logon without an installed or active VMware product |
| Hash and version | Match trusted records for the installed release | Do not match the product or change unexpectedly |
| Product context | A VMware product is installed and a guest is active | No VMware product is installed, or the process remains after removal |
Should you disable or delete vmware.exe?
Do not delete the file manually while a virtual machine is powered on. Broadcom VMware troubleshooting guidance says active VM files require exclusive disk access and that antivirus, backup software, disk utilities, spyware and other programs can interfere. Interference can cause slowdowns, crashes, file corruption, inability to open files or failure to power on the VM.
If you simply do not use VMware
- Shut down every guest operating system from inside the guest, then close VMware.
- Wait for
vmware.exeand related processes to exit. If one remains, record its path and command line before ending it. - Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the VMware product and use its supported Uninstall option.
- Restart Windows and verify that the product and its startup entries are gone. Preserve virtual-machine folders if you may need their disks or configuration later.
If you need VMware but want to stop automatic launches
First close all guests normally. Then use the VMware application’s own preferences and Windows Startup apps controls to prevent optional components from launching. Do not disable a service merely because its name is unfamiliar; verify its path and function, and expect that some VMware features may stop working.
If the copy looks malicious
- Do not open the file or run it again. Disconnect the affected host from untrusted networks if your incident-response policy permits.
- Keep evidence: full path, command line, process ID, parent process, signature result, version, hash, persistence entry and connection details.
- Run your current endpoint-security scan against the suspicious file and system. Avoid scanning or quarantining active VM files in a way that locks them while a guest is powered on.
- After evidence is preserved and guests are safely shut down, follow your organization’s malware-response process. An unsigned or anomalous copy should be escalated rather than “cleaned” by deleting one executable.
Keeping a VMware host safer
Apply supported VMware and host operating-system updates, use current endpoint protection, and limit who can administer the host and guests. VMware security guidance recommends attention to credential management, network security, hardened operating environments and defense in depth because attackers adapt tactics to sensitive operating systems and virtualization environments.
Separate administrative accounts from everyday accounts, restrict unnecessary network exposure and review unexpected changes to VM files, startup entries and certificates. Treat the host and each guest as security boundaries that need their own controls.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after you have checked the path and signature, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, tune settings, clear temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and record app crashes. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
