What a Canon printer driver does
A printer driver is the Windows software that translates a document or image into instructions your Canon printer can understand. The driver controls core printing functions such as paper size, orientation, color or monochrome output, print quality, and the selected printer connection. A scanner utility or complete setup package may add scanning and device-configuration features, but those are separate components from the basic print driver.

- Exact printer model: Read the model label on the front, top, or rear of the printer, or check the label on its original documentation. Similar model names can have different packages.
- Windows edition and architecture: Canon’s selector includes Windows 10 and Windows 10 (x64). Choose the entry that matches the Windows 10 installation on your computer.
- Connection type: Decide whether you will connect by Wi-Fi or a USB cable. Wireless installation requires the printer and computer to be on the same network when the wizard searches for the device.
- The task you need: Printing only may require a print driver. Scanning requires a scan utility as well, while a full setup package can combine the main driver and supporting software.
To check your Windows architecture, open Settings > System > About and look at System type. Use the Windows 10 (x64) listing when Windows reports a 64-bit operating system. If your system does not match the architecture shown by a package, return to the model page and choose the compatible listing instead of forcing the installation.
How to download the correct Canon driver
- Open Canon U.S.A.’s official Software & Drivers support page. If you are outside the United States, use the Canon support site for your region because catalogs and availability can differ.
- Choose Printers, then search for or select the printer’s exact model.
- In the operating-system controls, select Windows and then the matching version, such as Windows 10 or Windows 10 (x64).
- Review the results for that model. Canon may list separate drivers, software utilities, firmware, and manuals. Select the package that matches the job you need and read its description and release date.
- Choose the download command for the selected package and save the executable where you can find it, such as the Downloads folder.
Download only from Canon’s official support domain rather than an unverified driver mirror. The model and operating-system selectors are important: Canon states that its software and drivers are specific to the operating system, and that not every software item is compatible with every operating-system version.

Do not download every item simply because it appears in the list. Installing only what your task requires keeps the setup easier to troubleshoot. If you want printing and scanning, select the print driver and the compatible scan utility, or use Canon’s full setup package when the model page offers one.

Install the Canon driver in Windows 10
Canon’s Windows installation workflow uses an executable and an Installation Wizard. Keep the printer available during setup, but follow the wizard’s instructions about when to connect it; some packages search for the device at a specific stage.
- Open the downloaded executable from the location where you saved it. If Windows asks whether to allow the installer to make changes, confirm only after checking that the file came from Canon’s official support page.
- When the Installation Wizard opens, select the language you want to use.
- Choose Install to begin.
- Read the license agreement and select I agree if you accept its terms.
- Let the wizard check for previous printer-driver versions. Do not cancel this check unless the installer reports a specific error.
- When prompted, choose Express installation for the standard package choices or Custom installation when you need to select individual components.
- Allow the wizard to search for connected printers. Canon’s documentation describes this stage as the “Installation Wizard” searching for connected printers.
- When your model appears, select it and continue through the remaining prompts. Keep the printer powered on and connected until the wizard reports that setup is complete.
Express installation is generally the simpler route for a first setup. Custom installation is useful when you want a print driver without optional utilities, or when you need to add a scan component separately. The choices available depend on the package Canon lists for your model.
If the Installation Wizard cannot find the printer
A missing printer at the discovery stage does not necessarily mean the driver is wrong. The wizard can search only for a device that is powered, connected, and compatible with the selected setup method. Work through these checks in order.

Confirm power and readiness
- Turn the printer on and wait until its display or status lights show that it is ready.
- Check for a paper, cover, or ink-related state that leaves the printer unavailable. Clear the condition shown by the printer before rerunning discovery.
- Close the installer, power-cycle the printer, and launch the downloaded executable again if the device was turned on only after the search began.
For a wireless setup, check the network
- Connect the computer and printer to the same wireless network. A printer connected to a different network will not be available to a local discovery search.
- Move past temporary Wi-Fi interruptions before starting the wizard again. If the printer has recently changed networks, use the printer’s setup controls to reconnect it first.
- Rerun the installer after the printer shows that it is connected. Select the detected model when it appears.
For a USB setup, check the cable and port
- Use a compatible USB printer cable and connect it firmly to the printer and computer. A charge-only or damaged cable may not provide the data connection the installer needs.
- Disconnect hubs or adapters while testing, if possible, and connect the printer directly to the computer.
- Try another USB port, then restart the installer so it performs a fresh search.
Canon printers do not all use the same connector. Before purchasing a replacement cable, inspect the connector on the printer and verify the model’s requirements. A USB cable is useful only when the printer supports a compatible wired setup; it is not a universal accessory for every Canon model.

Return to the Canon model page if discovery still fails. Compare the model printed on the device with the model selected in the support interface, then verify that the package is listed for Windows 10 or Windows 10 (x64) as appropriate. A similar-looking model or a package for another operating-system version can prevent the expected device from appearing.
Start a clean retry
- Exit the Installation Wizard.
- Leave the printer powered on and establish the intended USB or same-network connection.
- Launch the same Canon executable again.
- Accept the language and license prompts, allow the previous-version check to finish, and select Express or Custom installation.
- Wait for the connected-printer search to complete before choosing the detected model.
If the wizard continues to show no compatible printer, stop and verify the model and package on Canon’s support page rather than repeatedly installing unrelated drivers.

Verify the installation after setup
Print a small test document from the application you normally use. Confirm that the Canon model selected in the print dialog is the device you installed, then check basic options such as paper size, orientation, and color mode. If you installed a scan utility, open it and confirm that the same multifunction printer is available as a scan source.
Keep the downloaded installer until the printer works reliably, especially if you may need to repeat setup. Record the exact Canon model and package name so that a future reinstall uses the same compatibility information instead of an approximate model match.

When to use Express versus Custom installation
Express installation
Choose Express installation when you want the package’s standard components and do not need to change the software selection. It reduces the number of decisions during setup and is normally the quickest path for a first installation.

Custom installation
Choose Custom installation when the package offers several components and you want to control which ones are installed. For example, you may need the print driver and scan utility but not every additional program listed by the package. Read each component’s description before clearing or selecting it.
Keeping the driver choice accurate
Canon’s support page can show drivers, utilities, firmware, and manuals together. Treat the exact model, Windows 10 variant, package type, and release date as a four-part check before every download. If you change the printer, move to a different Windows computer, or reinstall Windows, repeat that check instead of reusing an installer solely because its name contains “Canon.”
There is no single Canon printer driver that is correct for every model. The safest manual process is therefore model-first: identify the printer, select the matching Windows 10 entry, choose the component required for the task, and let Canon’s Installation Wizard search for the connected device.
