A vBulletin AdminCP login failure usually comes from one of five layers: the AdminCP path, browser cookies, malformed config.php output, a recently installed plugin, request-referrer validation, or the database connection. Work through those layers in that order. Do not repeatedly change credentials until you know which layer is failing, and remove any emergency bypass as soon as access is restored.

First, identify what is actually failing
The AdminCP has its own login prompt. Being signed in to the public forum does not by itself authenticate you to the control panel. The official manual describes the first AdminCP screen as a prompt to log in, so open the control-panel address directly and use an account with administrator privileges.

The standard path shown in the manual is https://www.example.com/forums/admincp/. Your installation may use another forum directory, and the final directory may have been renamed through the admincpdir setting. Use the configured directory name rather than assuming that /admincp/ is correct.

1. Confirm the AdminCP address and administrator account
- Open the forum’s configured AdminCP URL. Start with the usual
/admincp/suffix only if you have not renamed the directory. - If the directory was renamed, enter that exact value in the URL. A correct username and password cannot work against a nonexistent or wrong control-panel path.
- Use a user account that has administrator privileges. A normal forum account may be valid for the public site but still be refused by the AdminCP.
- Check the address bar for the correct scheme and host. Switching between a bare domain, a subdomain, and an alternate hostname can make an otherwise valid cookie unavailable to the requested host.
If the URL is correct and the page displays a normal login form, continue with the browser and server-side checks below. If the page itself is unavailable, note the exact web-server or PHP message before changing authentication settings.

2. Fix a login loop by resetting cookies and checking their scope
The classic loop is: you submit valid credentials, the page appears to accept them, and you are sent back to the login form. vBulletin’s manual warns that an invalid cookie setting can leave users unable to log in. The browser may be refusing the authentication cookie, storing it for the wrong path, or sending it only to a different domain.
Clear only the affected site’s cookies first
- Close other AdminCP tabs so an old session does not confuse the test.
- In your browser’s site-data or privacy controls, remove cookies for the forum host. Include both the public forum hostname and any separate administrative hostname you have used.
- Close and reopen the browser, navigate to the configured AdminCP URL, and sign in again.
- Test in a private window if the loop continues. This separates current cookie data from extensions and persistent browser state without deleting unrelated sites’ sessions.
If a private-window test works, the server may be fine and the problem is confined to stored site data or a browser extension. Re-create the normal session only after confirming the correct host and path.
Review the vBulletin cookie path and domain
Cookie settings must match the URL that serves the forum and AdminCP. A path that is narrower than the forum directory can prevent the browser from sending the login cookie to the control panel. A domain that names the wrong host, or includes a host convention your installation does not use, has the same effect.

- Compare the configured cookie domain with the hostname in the AdminCP URL.
- Compare the cookie path with the directory in which the forum runs.
- Do not broaden a cookie domain casually when unrelated subdomains share the parent domain; use the narrowest scope that covers the forum and its AdminCP.
- After changing a setting, clear the old cookies again. Browsers can retain cookies created under the previous path or domain.
When the loop started after a domain, HTTPS, directory, or migration change, treat cookie scope as the leading suspect. If clearing cookies and correcting the settings do not change the result, continue to the PHP-output check.
3. Repair “headers already sent” and malformed config.php output
PHP must send an authentication cookie before the response body begins. Extra output from the configuration file can prevent that. vBulletin identifies blank lines or spaces before <?php or after ?> as a common cause of “Cannot add cookie information, headers already sent.”
Inspect the file safely
- Make a backup copy of
config.phpbefore editing it. Store the backup outside the web-accessible document tree. - Open the file in an editor that can display whitespace and line endings.
- Ensure there is no blank line, space, or other character before the opening
<?phptag. - Check the end of the file for trailing whitespace or an accidental closing tag followed by a newline. Remove output after the PHP code; omitting the closing tag is commonly used for configuration-only PHP files when the installed version permits it.
- Save the file using the syntax and encoding appropriate for your installed vBulletin version, then upload it without changing its permissions or ownership.
Retest the AdminCP after clearing the forum cookies. Do not paste diagnostic text, editor banners, or a byte-order mark into the file. Any output before the application sends its headers can recreate the same failure.
4. Bypass a broken plugin after an add-on change
If access failed immediately after installing or updating an add-on, the plugin may be running during the login request and interrupting it. vBulletin documents a temporary hook bypass in config.php.

Temporarily disable hooks
- Back up
config.php. - Insert this line directly below the opening PHP tag:
define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true);- Save and upload the file, preserving the existing PHP syntax.
- Clear the forum cookies, reopen the configured AdminCP URL, and try the administrator login.
- If access returns, open the plugin manager and disable, repair, or remove the add-on that changed the login request.
- Restore
config.phpby removing theDISABLE_HOOKSline, then test the AdminCP again with hooks enabled.
This is a recovery switch, not a permanent operating mode. Leaving hooks disabled can suppress required application behavior and can hide the actual plugin fault. If the AdminCP remains inaccessible even with hooks disabled, the cause is probably outside the plugin layer; proceed to referrer and database diagnostics.
5. Resolve a POST-domain or referrer-whitelist error
A message stating that the POST domain is not whitelisted means vBulletin rejected the request’s referrer or host validation. This commonly follows a hostname, protocol, reverse-proxy, or domain change. The durable fix is to correct the configured referrer whitelist so it matches the legitimate URL users submit from.
Use the documented emergency bypass only to recover
- Back up
config.php. - Add this line directly below

define('SKIP_REFERRER_CHECK',true);- Save the file and retry the AdminCP login.
- Correct the referrer whitelist and any related host or HTTPS configuration while you have access.
- Remove
SKIP_REFERRER_CHECK, clear cookies, and perform a fresh login test.
Do not leave the bypass enabled. It weakens a request-validation check and can conceal a misconfigured hostname. If the error returns after removal, compare the exact host and protocol in the browser’s address bar with the values allowed by the installation.

6. Diagnose a database error before changing login credentials
A database message indicates that vBulletin cannot complete its connection or query, not necessarily that the administrator password is wrong. The connection settings in config.php must agree with the database server and the account’s permissions.
Check every connection value
servername: confirm the database host name or socket value supplied by the server administrator.usernameandpassword: verify the database account credentials exactly, including special characters and capitalization where the server treats them as significant.dbname: confirm that the named database exists and is the database used by this forum installation.
Confirm server-side prerequisites
- Verify that the database exists on the intended server.
- Confirm the configured database user is assigned to that database with the permissions vBulletin requires.
- Have the host or database administrator test whether the server accepts connections from the web server.
- Check for a database-service outage or a host-side change to credentials, permissions, or network access.
When the database service, permissions, or account details are wrong, editing browser cookies or disabling plugins will not restore the AdminCP. The host may need to correct the account, grant access, restore the database, or bring the MySQL service back online. Do not publish the contents of config.php while requesting help; it contains database credentials.
7. Use the failure’s timing to choose the next branch
Timing is a useful discriminator when several symptoms look similar. Record the last change that preceded the lockout and whether the public forum still works.

8. A complete recovery sequence
When the message is ambiguous, use this order so that low-risk checks come before server-side changes:

- Confirm the configured AdminCP directory and open the correct URL.
- Verify that the account has administrator privileges.
- Clear cookies for the forum host and retry in a private window.
- Check cookie domain and path settings against the actual forum URL.
- Back up and inspect
config.phpfor output before or after the PHP code. - If an add-on change preceded the failure, add
define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true);immediately below<?php, recover access, repair the plugin, and remove the line. - If the message names a non-whitelisted POST domain, use

9. Secure the installation after access returns
- Remove both emergency constants if you used them:
DISABLE_HOOKSandSKIP_REFERRER_CHECK. - Restore the intended plugin and referrer configuration and perform a new login test after each change.
- Keep the backup of the original configuration, but store it where the web server cannot serve it.
- Protect the live
config.php; it contains database credentials. - Clear test cookies and close any private browsing session used during recovery.
- Document the exact symptom, preceding change, and final fix so a future lockout can be triaged without repeating unrelated edits.
If the public forum remains available but the AdminCP does not, preserve the exact error text and the URL that produced it when contacting your host or developer. If every page reports a database failure, provide the host with the connection error and the time it began, while keeping credentials private.
