The reliable WordPress workflow is Image block → Upload or Media Library → select the animated GIF → add alt text → Publish or Update. You can also use Insert from URL, but an externally hosted file can disappear when its owner moves, deletes or stops sharing it. For a GIF you need to control over time, upload a copy to your Media Library.

Add a GIF with the WordPress Block Editor
WordPress treats a GIF as an image attachment, so the standard Image block is the correct starting point for a post or page. The same workflow works for a gaming news post, a walkthrough, a patch article or any other page that needs a short looping animation.

In your WordPress dashboard, open an existing post or page for editing, or create a new one. Put the cursor where the animation should appear. The GIF will be inserted at that position as its own block.
2. Insert an Image block
Select the + Block Inserter, search for Image, and choose the Image block. You can also type /image in an empty paragraph and press Enter. WordPress describes this block as the way to add an image to a page; its official guide is at WordPress.org’s Image block documentation.

3. Choose where the GIF comes from
The Image block presents three relevant choices:
- Upload: choose a GIF file stored on your computer or mobile device.
- Media Library: select a GIF that is already attached to your WordPress site.
- Insert from URL: paste the direct address of an image hosted elsewhere and press Enter.
The first two choices create a site-controlled attachment. With a URL, your page continues to depend on the other host. WordPress’s guide to inserting images in the Block Editor warns that an external image may stop displaying if the original file is moved, deleted or no longer shared.
4. Confirm that you selected the animated file
Before publishing, check that the selected item is the original animated GIF rather than a screenshot, a static preview or a thumbnail generated by another service. If you used the Media Library, open the attachment details and verify the file you intend to place in the post. The Image block can display the animation, but it cannot restore motion that was removed when a still image was created.

5. Add useful alternative text
Use the block settings to write alt text that communicates the GIF’s meaning or function. Describe the action a reader needs to understand, not every individual frame. For example, an animation showing a character parrying an attack could use “Knight parries a boss strike and counters with a sword swing,” rather than a frame-by-frame inventory of colors and poses.
6. Add context with a caption when needed
A caption is useful when the animation needs attribution, a gameplay explanation or a timing note. It is optional when the surrounding paragraph already makes the GIF’s purpose clear. Keep the caption focused on why the animation is present.

7. Set alignment or size, then save
Use the Image block toolbar and settings to align the block or adjust its displayed size. Preview the post at the widths your audience uses, particularly if the GIF contains small interface text. Select Publish for a new page or post, or Update for an existing one.

For a long-lived guide or a page that must remain intact, upload a copy and use that Media Library attachment. A URL is best treated as a dependency, not as permanent storage. Only publish a GIF that you have permission to use; finding a file online does not grant publishing rights.
Why a GIF sometimes appears as a still image
A static result usually means WordPress is displaying a still derivative instead of the original animation. This can happen when a thumbnail, screenshot or processed image was selected, or when another block or plugin supplied a static preview. Start by replacing the block with the original/full GIF in a standalone Image block.
Replace a thumbnail with the original GIF
- Select the static image block and remove it, or use its replacement option.
- Insert a new Image block with
/imageor the Block Inserter. - Choose Upload and select the original GIF, or choose Media Library and pick the full animated attachment.
- Save the post and preview it outside the editor to verify that the animation plays.
If the original file itself is non-animated, WordPress cannot recreate the missing frames. Obtain the correct animated asset and repeat the insertion.

Convert an opaque GIF to a smaller video variation
Current WordPress client-side media processing can offer a Display as video control for an opaque animated GIF in a standalone Image block. Selecting it changes the block to a GIF variation of the Video block and creates a companion MP4 or WebM representation. WordPress says this can “reduce download size dramatically while preserving the look-and-feel of an animated GIF.” The conversion is optional and reversible; keeping the original Image-block presentation remains valid.
The control is not guaranteed in every environment. The browser needs WebCodecs video encoding support. Browsers without that support, including Firefox according to WordPress’s developer guide, fall back to uploading the original GIF. Transparent animated GIFs are also kept as GIFs because ordinary video formats cannot reproduce GIF transparency. The converted asset is represented through the Video block’s GIF variation rather than as a conventional still Image block. That means playback-related controls can matter. The Video block documentation lists Autoplay, Loop, Muted and Play inline settings. Review those settings in the block sidebar and toolbar, then preview the published page on both desktop and mobile. A browser or device may apply its own autoplay policy, so muted autoplay is generally the setting most likely to work consistently.
When to keep the original GIF
- The animation uses transparency that must remain intact.
- Your audience includes browsers that cannot perform the client-side WebCodecs conversion.
- You need the broadest compatibility with image-focused workflows.
- The GIF is small enough that the original transfer cost is acceptable.
When the file is opaque and large, the video variation can reduce the amount transferred while preserving an animated presentation. The decision belongs to the specific asset and audience rather than to a blanket rule.

Block choices: Image, other media blocks and Jetpack’s GIF option
The standalone Image block is the documented location for the Display as video GIF control. A GIF placed inside a gallery, Media & Text block or Cover media does not offer the same standalone conversion control. If that control is important, insert the GIF as its own Image block first.
Sites using Jetpack can also encounter the GIF Block, which is oriented toward inserting GIFs from Giphy. Its workflow is separate from WordPress’s built-in Image block. Use the built-in Image block when you already have a licensed GIF file or need to manage an attachment in your own Media Library; use the Jetpack option only when its Giphy-oriented search and insertion flow fits your publishing rights and editorial process. Accessibility and editorial decisions
Write alt text for meaning, not motion inventory
Ask what a reader who cannot see the animation needs to know. A concise description of the action, result or interface state is usually more useful than listing every frame. If the GIF is decorative and conveys no information, your site’s accessibility practice may call for empty alt text; follow the accessibility conventions used for the rest of your publication.
Explain important action in nearby prose
Do not make a critical gameplay instruction depend on motion alone. If a GIF demonstrates a timing window, menu path or combat technique, state that information in the paragraph or a caption as well. This keeps the explanation available when animation is disabled, fails to load or is difficult to follow.

Consider motion sensitivity
Rapid flashing or continuous movement can distract readers or affect comprehension. If the animation is not essential, a still image may communicate the point more clearly. For essential motion, explain the action in text and avoid relying on visual timing that a reader must watch repeatedly.
Reliability, rights and file-delivery checks
Prefer a Media Library copy for durable pages
An externally hosted GIF can disappear without any change to your WordPress post. The remote owner may rename the file, remove it, change permissions or stop sharing it. Uploading a copy gives you control over the attachment and removes that single point of failure, although you still need to keep your own site’s backups and storage healthy.
Confirm publishing permission
GIFs frequently come from game footage, community creations or third-party libraries. Confirm that your license, permission or applicable platform terms allow publication on your site. WordPress’s insertion tools do not verify copyright ownership for you.
Check the published page, not only the editor
After saving, open the public URL in a fresh browser tab. Verify that the animation starts, that the alt text is present, that the caption is readable and that the surrounding text still makes sense if the image is blocked. If you converted the asset to video, test the playback behavior and controls on a mobile browser as well as a desktop browser.
Troubleshooting checklist
The GIF is completely still
- Confirm that the attachment is an animated GIF rather than a JPEG, PNG or screenshot.
- Replace a thumbnail or third-party preview with the original/full GIF in a standalone Image block.
- If the file is transparent, do not expect the video-conversion control; transparent GIFs remain GIFs.
- Open the public page after updating, because an editor preview can differ from the rendered post.
The Display as video control is missing
- Make sure the GIF is in a standalone Image block, not a Gallery, Media & Text or Cover block.
- Check whether the GIF contains transparency; WordPress does not convert transparent animation to video.
- Your browser may not support WebCodecs video encoding. In that case WordPress falls back to the original GIF.
The animation disappeared after using a URL
- Test the direct image URL in a browser to see whether the remote file still exists and is publicly shared.
- If the host moved or removed it, obtain a permitted copy and upload it to your Media Library.
- Update the block, then test the published page again.
The motion is distracting or hard to understand
- Add a sentence that explains the action or result shown.
- Use a caption when timing or context matters.
- Replace the GIF with a still image when motion adds little value or could impair comprehension.
A practical publishing sequence for gaming sites
- Prepare the original animated GIF and confirm that you have permission to publish it.
- Open the target post or page and insert a standalone Image block.
- Upload the file or select the existing Media Library attachment; use a URL only when you accept the dependency on another host.
- Check that the file is animated, then write alt text describing the gameplay action or result.
- Add a caption or nearby explanation if readers need to understand timing, controls or context.
- For an opaque, large GIF, consider Display as video if WordPress offers it. Review Autoplay, Loop, Muted and Play inline settings after conversion.
- Preview the public page on desktop and mobile, then select Publish or Update.
This process keeps the basic GIF workflow simple while giving you a deliberate choice between an original image and WordPress’s optional video-backed presentation.
