Capcom says it is focusing on reactivating dormant game franchises, but it has not promised that every older series will return or named further candidates. The company made the strategy explicit on December 13, 2024, alongside announcements for an Okami sequel project and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Since then, the new Onimusha has launched; the Okami project remains the other announced example in the cited statements.
What Capcom said about reactivating dormant IPs
In a December 13, 2024 press release, Capcom said: “In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently.”
The company connected that focus to making use of its library of content. It said it sought to enhance corporate value by reviving past IPs and producing high-quality titles efficiently. In that same release, Capcom pointed to the newly announced Okami sequel project and Onimusha: Way of the Sword as examples.
This is a statement of focus, not a guarantee that every dormant franchise will receive a sequel, remake, or reboot. Capcom did not set out a complete revival schedule or a list of future projects.

Which Capcom franchises were announced?
Okami sequel project
Capcom described the Okami project as the beginning of a new tale, co-developed with the original director and members of the original development team. The announcement gave no release date. GameSpot’s December 16, 2024 report identified the returning director as Hideki Kamiya and likewise noted that Capcom had not provided a release window.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Capcom announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword as the first new entry in the series in more than 20 years. Unlike the Okami project, it has now reached players: Capcom says it released on September 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

What happened after Onimusha launched?
In a September 7, 2026 announcement, Capcom reported that worldwide sales of Onimusha: Way of the Sword exceeded one million units on launch day. It also reported that cumulative sales for the Onimusha series exceeded ten million units. These are figures reported by Capcom, not independently audited figures established here.
The same statement restated Capcom’s focus on reactivating IPs without a recent new-title launch. It did not name any additional franchises under consideration.

Which Capcom franchises are coming back next?
Capcom has not named further candidates in the cited official statements. A September 2026 Inven Global report also says the company did not disclose which IPs it was considering. So while fans may hope for series such as Dino Crisis, Ace Attorney, or Breath of Fire, those names should be treated as speculation—not confirmed Capcom plans.
The distinction matters: the two projects Capcom named in 2024 show what its stated strategy looked like in practice, but they do not establish which other dormant series, if any, will return.
