What kind of game is Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker?
It is much more a puzzle game than a conventional platformer. Each level is a small, self-contained diorama: rotate it to see around corners, work out how platforms and hazards fit together, then guide Toad or Toadette along a safe route. Since the characters cannot jump, observation and planning replace the usual platforming reflexes.

Nintendo’s official Wii U description says the game has more than 70 stages. That is a figure for the Wii U version; it should not be assumed to describe every later edition. The idea grew out of Captain Toad bonus challenges in Super Mario 3D World, according to Nintendo Life’s 2014 Wii U review (Nintendo Life’s Wii U review).

Most stages have a star to reach, with hidden gems and optional challenges for players who want more than the main objective. That structure makes the route to the star approachable while still rewarding careful exploration. Glen Fox’s European Switch review for Nintendo Life, published 11 July 2018, praised the puzzle design and presentation, but found the Pixel Toad challenges weak; the review scored the game 8/10 (Nintendo Life’s Switch review). Those are a critic’s judgments, not a current hands-on assessment.

Nintendo Life’s Switch review describes the new edition as a welcome fit for the system, while noting the loss of the Wii U stages. Its conclusion called the game “a hidden gem from the Wii U era that’s been given a new lease of life on the Nintendo Switch, and rightly so.” That is the reviewer’s view, not a guarantee that the Switch edition is an upgrade for every owner.
What is multiplayer in the Switch version?
The Switch version adds multiplayer, but the cited review does not establish a player count or give enough detail to describe every mode and role. The specific control details it does report are touch interaction in handheld mode and gyro controls for TV play. If you are choosing the game primarily for a particular co-op setup, check the current on-box or Nintendo listing for the exact supported configuration rather than assuming a player count.

Is the Switch version worth buying if you own the Wii U game?
It depends on which differences matter to you. Switch is the straightforward choice if you want the Odyssey-themed stages, multiplayer, handheld touch controls or a version for current Switch play. It is not a complete content superset: the Wii U’s four Super Mario 3D World-themed stages are absent from the later ports. If those original stages matter more than the Switch additions, the Wii U version has something the newer edition does not.
In a selected Switch review excerpt displayed by Metacritic, GamesBeat called the game “charming, fun, and — in a rarity for Nintendo’s Wii U ports — right-priced for the Switch.” That is a dated critic quote, not evidence of today’s price or a complete measure of critical consensus (Metacritic’s Switch critic-review listing).

Is the 3DS edition a good portable version?
It is a portable adaptation that keeps the rotatable-stage puzzle format and adds touch play and stereoscopic 3D. Those features make sense for small levels designed to be inspected from different angles. The tradeoff reported by Nintendo Life’s 3DS review, published 11 July 2018, is lower resolution and 30fps rather than the 60fps reported for Wii U and Switch. If visual sharpness and frame rate are your priority, that comparison favors the other two versions; if 3D and touch controls appeal to you, the 3DS edition has distinct strengths (Nintendo Life’s 3DS review).
