Its PS5 critic reviews are generally favorable, but the score alone won’t tell you whether its exploration, combat, humor, and local co-op suit you. Here’s what the game offers—and what the available evidence can and can’t establish.
What is Cat Quest III?
Cat Quest III is a 2.5D open-world action RPG set in the Purribean, a pirate-themed archipelago populated by Pi-rats and treasure hunters. You explore on foot, sail a player-controlled ship, take on sea combat, and pursue quests and treasure. The official PlayStation listing also describes dungeons, weapons, spells, costumes, and the ability to swap weapons during combat. These are descriptions of the game’s features, not independent assessments of how well each one works.

PlayStation lists the game for PS4 and PS5, with a US release date of August 8, 2024. Nintendo UK lists the Switch release as 7 August 2024 and identifies a Nintendo Switch Game Card edition. Those dates refer to different regional listings, not conflicting release information. PlayStation’s Cat Quest III listing and Nintendo UK’s listing are the relevant platform pages.
What do Cat Quest III reviews say?
On the Metacritic PS5 critic page, Cat Quest III had an 80 Metascore from 21 critic reviews when accessed in 2026, classified as “Generally Favorable.” The count comprised 16 positive reviews, five mixed reviews, and none classified as negative. This is a dated PS5-specific snapshot, not a permanent score or a summary of every platform’s reviews. The separate Metacritic user score was 7.8 from 115 ratings at that time; user ratings are not critic reviews, and those totals can change.
#1 Best Overall
- Retail Edition includes The Cat’s Meow’ of Navigation Maps and a Pawsitively Purr-fect Sticker Sheet
- The cat is back, this time fighting pi-rats in a new Action-RPG adventure
- Explore an incredible pirate world filled with treasures - the Purribean; Sail your very own ship and engage in sea battles
- Play with a matey in 2-player local co-op
- Investigate clues and uncover secrets to find the mythical Northen Star
These figures support a favorable reception among the critics represented on that page, but they do not settle whether the game is right for you. The more useful questions are whether you enjoy relaxed island-hopping, accessible action, and a deliberately silly pirate-cat tone.
How rewarding are exploration and combat?
Exploration and sailing
The game’s structure pairs land exploration with sailing between islands and fighting at sea. PlayStation’s listing emphasizes freedom to explore at leisure and says quests can be tackled in any order, suggesting a flexible rather than strictly linear adventure. Whether that freedom feels substantial will depend on how much you enjoy searching islands and dungeons between quest objectives; the official feature description does not establish the amount of content or how long a typical playthrough takes.

Combat and progression
Combat is action-oriented, with weapons, spells, combos, and weapon swapping as part of the described toolkit. That gives players several ways to approach fights, but the feature list alone cannot show how deep or demanding the system feels in practice. If you want a complex build-focused RPG, don’t treat the presence of multiple weapons and spells as proof of extensive strategic depth. If you prefer direct action and the option to switch tools as you play, the setup may be a better fit.

How are the story, humor, and pace?
The premise leans into cat-and-pirate wordplay. That gives the adventure a light, intentionally playful voice rather than a serious pirate drama. A critic excerpt surfaced on Metacritic described the puns as potentially excessive; that is one reviewer’s impression, not evidence of a consensus. Players who enjoy persistent puns may find the tone appealing, while those who tire quickly of wordplay may find it grating.

The available official material does not provide a verified completion-time estimate. The game’s open-ended quest structure supports exploring at your own pace, but it does not establish whether the adventure will feel short or substantial to a particular player. Avoid relying on an assumed hour count when deciding whether it fits your schedule.
Can you play Cat Quest III in co-op?
Yes. The PlayStation and Nintendo listings both describe solo and local co-op play. PlayStation states: “Cat Quest III is playable either solo or in local co-op.” This confirms local play, but the available listings do not establish online co-op. They also do not independently answer how well the game’s combat or pacing works for two players, so treat co-op as a supported mode rather than a guarantee that it will suit every pair.

Which platform or edition should you choose?
The documented options include PS4 and PS5 on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch on Nintendo’s UK listing. Nintendo UK identifies a Switch Game Card edition for players who prefer physical ownership; check that regional listing for the edition and current availability. The pages cited here do not establish platform-by-platform differences in resolution, frame rate, loading, performance, bugs, or feature parity, so there is not enough evidence to recommend one version on technical grounds.

Who is Cat Quest III for?
- Consider it if you want a light action RPG built around island exploration, sailing, treasure-hunting, and accessible combat.
- It may suit you if you enjoy playful cat-and-pirate jokes and want the option of local co-op.
- Look more closely before buying if you prioritize complex RPG systems, serious storytelling, or verified technical comparisons between platforms; the cited information does not establish those qualities.
For a reader drawn to its breezy pirate adventure and flexible exploration, the favorable PS5 critic snapshot is encouraging. The score is best used as context, though: the game’s humor and action-RPG scope are more useful indicators of whether it matches your tastes.
