For the netted, orange-fleshed melon commonly sold as cantaloupe in U.S. grocery stores, choose fruit with a fragrant smell, an intact rind, and a little give; wash and scrub the rind under cool running water before cutting, then refrigerate cut pieces. The name is used differently in different places, so the guidance below defines which melon it means.

What is a cantaloupe?

In U.S. grocery usage, “cantaloupe” usually means the netted, orange-fleshed muskmelon, botanically identified as Cucumis melo var. reticulatus. “Cantaloupe” and “muskmelon” are often used interchangeably for this type, but the names are not consistent everywhere. Iowa State distinguishes it from smooth-rinded, green-fleshed honeydew and other melons such as Canary, Persian, Galia, and Oriental types. European cantaloupes may be ribbed or have a rough, scaly rind without netting. Iowa State Extension, Purdue Extension, and UC ANR describe these regional and type distinctions.

How do you tell if a cantaloupe is ripe?

Use several cues together rather than relying on one color or a single touch test. Ripe fruit is typically fragrant, free of bruises and cuts, and gives slightly when pressed at the stem or blossom end. A smooth, rounded stem scar and a yellow or cream background beneath the netting can also indicate ripeness. The sources describe pressure at different ends of the melon, so treat slight give as a general sign, not a precise test. Some newer varieties remain green when ripe, making rind color unreliable on its own. Purdue Extension and UC ANR provide the selection cues.

  • Look for an intact rind without bruises, cuts, or obvious defects.
  • Smell for the characteristic sweet, aromatic scent.
  • Check for slight give at an end of the fruit, without expecting it to feel soft all over.
  • Consider the rind background and stem scar, but account for variety differences.

How should you wash and cut a cantaloupe?

Wash the whole melon before cutting, even though you do not eat the rind. The netted surface can hold bacteria; cutting through an unwashed rind may transfer contamination to the flesh. Washing reduces surface dirt and contamination but does not sterilize the fruit. The FDA notes that pathogens can survive or grow in cantaloupe flesh if contamination is introduced. Its cantaloupe food-safety guidance describes risks across the food chain and identifies Salmonella and Listeria among organisms associated with outbreaks.

  1. Rinse the whole melon under cool running water and scrub its rind with a clean produce brush, following USDA food-service produce guidance.
  2. Cut the melon lengthwise on a clean cutting board with a clean knife.
  3. Scoop out the seeds and stringy center with a spoon.
  4. Cut the halves into wedges. For cubes, separate the flesh from the rind and dice it.

Serve wedges as they are, or try Purdue Extension’s grilled option: peel the wedges, brush them with oil, and grill over medium heat, turning every few minutes for 10–12 minutes. This is a preparation suggestion, not a required step. Purdue Extension provides the cutting and grilling instructions.

How should you store whole and cut cantaloupe?

Refrigerate cut cantaloupe promptly and keep it chilled. For home use, Purdue Extension gives about five days as an approximate refrigerated storage period for cut fruit. For whole fruit, storage estimates vary: Purdue lists 5–15 days on the counter depending on ripeness and a few weeks in the refrigerator, while Iowa State says whole muskmelons can be refrigerated for up to two weeks. These are source-specific estimates, not guarantees; ripeness, condition, and refrigerator temperature affect how long a melon keeps. See Purdue Extension and Iowa State Extension.

USDA school food-service guidance permits cut melons to be held up to four hours without refrigeration or ice and says refrigerated cut melons in that setting should be consumed or discarded within seven days. Those are institutional food-service limits, not the preferred home-storage practice or a home-use guarantee. Commercial postharvest guidance from UC Davis gives an optimum storage range of 36–41°F and up to 21 days at 36°F, while warning that sensory quality may decline; it also says chilling injury typically occurs after several days below 35.6°F (2°C). These commercial figures should not be read as consumer shelf-life promises.

Purdue Extension says cantaloupe is not well suited to freezing or canning. If you have more fruit than you can use fresh, plan around refrigerated storage rather than assuming freezing or canning will preserve its quality.

What nutrition does cantaloupe provide?

Purdue Extension FoodLink reports the following for 1 cup of melon balls (177 g). These figures belong to that serving basis and source; they should not be merged with values from other publications. Purdue Extension FoodLink was accessed in 2026.

Nutrient Amount per 1 cup (177 g)
Calories 60
Carbohydrate 14 g
Dietary fiber 2 g
Total sugars 14 g
Vitamin C 65 mg
Vitamin A 299 μg

A separate USDA-hosted 2015 educational publication gives about 50 calories per cup of diced cantaloupe, approximately 95% Daily Value of vitamin C, and almost 18% Daily Value of vitamin A. Its serving description and date differ from Purdue’s, so these are separate published figures, not a reconciled estimate. USDA, “Enjoy More Fruits and Vegetables” (2015).

Can you grow cantaloupe at home?

Yes. Iowa State Extension recommends a sunny site, fertile, well-drained soil, and planting after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed to 60–70°F. Its specific guidance is written for Iowa; local frost dates, growing season, and climate affect when and which varieties to plant. The extension page recommends at least six hours of sun and soil pH of 5.5–7.0. Iowa State Extension’s melon-growing guidance covers starting from seed and choosing varieties.

Basic growing conditions

  • Choose a site with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Wait until frost danger has passed and soil temperature reaches 60–70°F, as recommended for Iowa.
  • Allow for bee pollination; where insecticides are used, avoid application during active pollination where possible.
  • Select seed varieties suited to your local climate rather than assuming one cultivar fits every region.

Ripe fruit may release easily from the stem, feel slightly soft at the flower end, show yellowing between the netting, and have a characteristic aroma. Use these together as harvest signs and adapt planting and harvest timing to local conditions.
