“CBAXFR.DLL was not found” — what it means

cbaxfr.dll is a third-party component, not a normal Windows file. When Windows reports that cbaxfr.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the caller is usually Intel Common Base Agent, historically associated with LANDesk management software and later Ivanti Endpoint Manager deployments.

If you intentionally removed the management software, restoring cbaxfr.dll is usually the wrong goal. Remove the remaining reference instead.

On Windows 10, open Task Manager and select the Startup tab.

Disabling a startup entry prevents it from launching, but it does not remove the underlying service or scheduled task. Use this as a diagnostic step or when the related software has already been removed.

Check services carefully

1. Press Win + R.
2. Enter services.msc.
3. Press Enter.
4. Look for a service clearly belonging to the removed agent.
5. Open Properties and record the Service name and Path to executable.
6. If the product is definitely no longer required, use the vendor’s uninstaller or your organization’s cleanup procedure.

Do not randomly stop or delete services. A management service may have a name that does not visibly contain “LANDesk” or “Ivanti,” and deleting the wrong service can create a separate boot or networking problem.

Step 4: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything

If the error began after a security scan:

1. Open Windows Security.
2. Select Virus & threat protection.
3. Select Protection history.
4. Open the event related to the missing file.
5. Record the detection name, original file path, action taken, and date.
6. Check whether the file was digitally signed and whether the parent agent was still installed.

Step 5: Repair Windows components only if broader corruption is present

cbaxfr.dll is not a protected Windows system DLL, so Windows component repair will not normally recreate it. Still, DISM and System File Checker are useful if other Windows files are failing too.

Run DISM

Why common DLL fixes fail

Downloading a loose DLL

A standalone download can have the wrong build, architecture, dependencies, or publisher. It may also be tampered with. Even a genuine file from another installation may not match the service that loads it.

The safer source is the complete approved agent installer from the organization managing the computer or the software owner that supplied the agent.

Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64

The CBA agent may expect the DLL beside its own executable or in a product-specific directory. Windows searches for DLLs according to defined rules, and manually planting a file in a system directory can create version conflicts or DLL search-order vulnerabilities.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64 unless the original installer explicitly requires that exact location.

Running regsvr32

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair tool. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An application library can be perfectly valid without supporting registration.

Only run it if the product’s official installer documentation specifically instructs you to register this file. In that narrow case, use the full path supplied by the installer, for example:

regsvr32 "C:pathtocbaxfr.dll"

Reinstalling Microsoft runtimes automatically

There is no basis for treating cbaxfr.dll as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. Reinstall those packages only when the parent application explicitly reports a missing runtime dependency.

The filename is legitimate, but a filename can be copied by an unwanted program. Investigate further when:

• The file is outside the expected agent directory.
• It has no credible digital signature.

Collect this information before trying another replacement:

• Exact error text
• The executable or service named by the error
• Full path of any remaining cbaxfr.dll
• File properties and digital-signature status
• Intel, LANDesk, or Ivanti product name
• Agent version and system architecture
