The safest repair is to identify the affected Brother installation and reinstall the complete package from Brother Support, not to download the DLL separately.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record these details:
- Which program shows the error: a Brother utility, a print dialog, a third-party application, or another executable.
- When it appears: during sign-in, when starting a Brother program, when printing, or when Windows starts the Print Spooler.
- The exact message: “brsplwmk.dll was not found,” “missing from your computer,” or “not designed to run on Windows.”
- Your printer model: use the label on the printer or the model shown in Windows printer settings.
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- The file path, if a copy exists: right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect Location and Digital Signatures.
- Recent changes: Windows updates, Brother software removal, printer replacement, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, profile migration, or an interrupted installation.
Do not infer the printer model from the filename. The exact Brother product, package name, version, file size, hash, and supported models for brsplwmk.dll are not established by the filename alone.

What is brsplwmk.dll
brsplwmk.dll appears to be a Brother Industries Ltd printer-software or driver DLL. Its internal name is brsplwmk, but the exact Brother package that installed it cannot be identified reliably without the printer model and Windows architecture.
It is not normally a Windows system DLL. It should not be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64, and its presence in either directory would not prove that it belongs there. The error can come from several places:
- A Brother printer application that no longer has all its files.
- A print queue pointing to a removed or damaged Brother driver.
- A Brother utility loading an incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit component.
- Antivirus software quarantining the DLL.
- An incomplete installation after a printer replacement or Windows update.
If only one program reports the error, repair that program first. If printing fails from every application, focus on the Brother driver, printer queue, and Print Spooler.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Brother package
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged brsplwmk.dll.
1. Find the printer model
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for the Brother printer name and model.
- If the printer is not listed, check its front panel, label, or original documentation.
Do not select a package for a similar model. Brother installers can contain model-specific utilities and driver components.

If the printer is still listed:
- Select the printer under Printers & scanners.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
On some systems, you can also use:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select View devices and printers.
- Right-click the Brother printer.
- Select Remove device.
- Confirm the action.
If the Brother package has its own uninstall tool, use it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Search for Brother software, select the three-dot menu, choose Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
Restart Windows after removing the software or printer.
3. Download the model-specific package
- Open Brother Support.
- Enter the exact printer model.
- Select your Windows version when prompted.
- Choose the complete driver and software package, not an unrelated utility.
- Check the package architecture offered for your system.
- Download the installer from Brother.
Run the installer, preferably by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator. Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
4. Confirm the result
The repair worked if:
- The Brother application opens without the DLL message.
- Windows shows the printer under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- A test page prints.
- The error does not return after restarting Windows.
If the error returns immediately, the wrong model, package, or architecture may have been selected. Remove the failed installation and repeat the process using the exact model shown on the printer.

Fix 2: Check for an orphaned printer queue
A removed Brother application can leave a printer queue or driver behind. Windows may then try to load brsplwmk.dll even though the original Brother software is gone.

Remove and recreate the queue
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select each Brother printer entry.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to search, or choose the manual-add option if the printer is not discovered.
- Install the current Brother package from the model-specific support page.
- Print a test page.
If several old Brother entries are present, remove only entries that belong to the affected printer. Avoid deleting unrelated printers.
Inspect old driver packages

- Type
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Look for an old Brother driver associated with the removed printer.
- Select it and choose Remove.
- Choose the option to remove the driver and driver package when Windows offers it.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current Brother package again.
Do not remove a driver that belongs to another working printer. If Windows refuses to remove the package, leave it in place and continue with the current model-specific installer rather than deleting files manually.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Brother component after an update or repair.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
brsplwmk.dllor Brother software. - Note the detected path and action.
- Do not restore the file solely because its name looks familiar.
A restore is reasonable only when the file is inside a legitimate Brother installation directory and the installed package is trusted or digitally signed. The safer repair is usually to remove the damaged Brother installation and reinstall it from Brother Support.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If the official installer is repeatedly quarantined, update the security product, record its detection name, and contact Brother or the security vendor before allowing the file.

Fix 4: Verify the file path and signature
If a copy of brsplwmk.dll exists, check whether it belongs to the Brother installation.
- Open File Explorer.
- Locate the file using the path shown in the error or the application settings.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for its location.
- Open Details and review the description and publisher information.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab is available.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A Brother name in a temporary folder, a downloads folder, or an unfamiliar application directory deserves caution. Scan that location with Windows Security. Do not overwrite the file with a copy from another computer, because a different version or architecture can create a second failure.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit edition of Windows can run 32-bit applications. That does not mean a 32-bit Brother component can be replaced by a 64-bit DLL, or the reverse.
Check the following:
- Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and read System type.
- Application architecture: inspect the affected program’s documentation or installation folder. A program installed under
C:Program Files (x86)is commonly 32-bit, but the folder alone is not definitive. - Brother package architecture: use the architecture and Windows version offered by Brother’s model-specific download page.
- Error source: note whether the message appears from a Brother executable, a print process, or a third-party program.
Install the package intended for the exact printer model and Windows version. Do not substitute a similarly named DLL from another Brother model.
If a 32-bit application fails while 64-bit applications print normally, repair that application and its Brother integration first. If every application fails to print, investigate the shared printer queue and driver.
Fix 6: Restart the Print Spooler
A stale spooler state can keep attempting to load an old driver.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try printing again.
If restarting does not help:
- Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to
C:WindowsSystem32spoolPRINTERS. - Approve administrator access if requested.
- Delete only the files inside this folder.
- Return to Services.
- Right-click Print Spooler and select Start.
- Reinstall or recreate the Brother printer queue.
Do not delete files from the Windows system directory outside this spool folder. If the error appears again when the spooler starts, an old printer driver or queue is still registered, so repeat the queue cleanup rather than copying a DLL.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when other Windows files fail
brsplwmk.dll is associated with Brother software, so Windows component repair normally will not restore it. DISM and System File Checker are appropriate when Windows itself is reporting several damaged or missing components, not as the primary repair for one Brother DLL.
Open an elevated terminal:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Brother application or printer again.
Microsoft documents this sequence in its guidance for repairing a Windows image. Its instructions for System File Checker explain how to interpret the scan result.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but brsplwmk.dll remains missing, that is expected for a third-party Brother file. Reinstall the Brother package afterward.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which Windows component changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what it identifies before its full-version repair, but it is optional and cannot replace the definitive Brother package reinstall.
Fix 8: Repair a profile-specific or recent-change problem
If the error started after a Windows update, software removal, system restore, or profile migration, determine whether the problem affects all users.

- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Choose I don’t have this person’s sign-in information.
- Choose Add a user without a Microsoft account.
- Create a temporary local account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Test the Brother application or printer.
If the error occurs only in the original profile, repair the Brother software there and check profile-specific startup items. Do not copy DLL files between profiles.
If the failure began immediately after a recent installation or update and a suitable restore point exists, open Control Panel, search for Recovery, select Open System Restore, and follow the restore-point wizard. System Restore does not guarantee recovery of a third-party driver, so reinstall Brother software afterward if necessary.

Do not start with:
regsvr32 brsplwmk.dll
regsvr32 is intended for registering DLLs that provide the required COM registration entry point. A printer-support DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM library. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference.
Running it may produce an error such as a missing entry point or may appear to load the module without fixing the application. It does not restore missing dependencies, recreate a printer queue, or repair Brother’s installation state.
Do not download brsplwmk.dll separately
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong Brother version.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A file missing other required dependencies.
- A modified or malicious file.
- A DLL that loads temporarily but leaves the driver registration damaged.
Never copy a replacement into System32, SysWOW64, the Brother folder, or an application folder unless it came through the correct official installer. The safe source is the model-specific Brother package from Brother Support.
Microsoft Visual C++ is not the default answer either. Consider the latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable only if the Brother installer or relevant event log specifically identifies a missing Visual C++ dependency. Installing every runtime package will not normally restore a missing Brother DLL.

- Exact printer model.
- Windows edition and architecture.
- Full error wording.
- Program or process that displays the error.
- File path shown in the error or file properties.
- Whether the file has a valid digital signature.
- Brother package name and installer result.
- Antivirus quarantine event, if any.
- Whether all applications fail to print or only one.
- Whether a new Windows profile shows the same problem.
If the Brother installer fails repeatedly, remove old Brother queues, restart the Print Spooler, reboot, and run the model-specific installer again as administrator. Do not delete unrelated drivers or system files.
